Ah board games  8-)
Thankfully i've got quite a few friends who like them.

One of my favourites is Betrayal at House on the Hill by wizards of the coast.

The game consists of 2 phases. The first is exploring the house, the house consists of randomized room tiles, so each playthrough is different. Every room may contain a useful item, an event (usually bad), or an omen. The idea is to try to improve your characters skills in these first rounds (Speed, Intelligence, Stamina and Toughness)

Sometime during the game, the haunt phase kicks inl. This is where the game gets really fun, the rule book states which character becomes evil and which scenario is being played. There are 50 different scenarios, with all kinds of baddies zombies, cannibals, dragons, vampires, the house itself, or almost any other monster imaginable.
The 'traitor' has to leave the room and gets his own rule book and goals. The others stay behind to discuss tactics. Once everybody is back in the room, the game is continued and both sides try to reacht their goals first. (Which usually consists of killing of one of both sides.)

Well, some friends and I have started a semi-regular game night, so I'm looking forward to trying out some new games.

Our first session consisted of Descent: Journeys in the Dark. It's a dungeon crawl, with one player taking the role of Overlord and opposing the rest of the players who are exploring the dungeon, and working together to complete a quest that varies with each scenario.

It was fun, but tough going to say the least. The game is definitely in favor of an Overlord player who knows what he's doing, and as the Overlord for the session was the guy who owned the game, we were in trouble. The Overlord can spawn monsters anywhere out of the line of sight of the PC's, so you find yourself trying to advance while covering as many angles as possible.

We got bogged down trying to fend off monsters and concentrating on not dying, and found ourselves not really moving forward after awhile, and decided to pick up where we left off next session. I've been wondering if we were being too careful, and perhaps should have been trying to move through the dungeon quicker, regardless of what monsters had popped up. Something to consider for next time.

Coincidentally, the aforementioned Betrayal at House on the Hill is tentatively scheduled as well for the next session. Looking forward to it, as that element of surprise with the traitor sounds intriguing.
