Ah, I didn't know you can upgrade your companions. Thanks for the heads-up!
I also didn't know that :-? There's so much to do you easily oversee things in Vegas

They always return to their original location, so Boone goes back to Novac

Select talk to from the radial menu, and choose 'it's time for us to part ways' . Gaming is much more important then working

Just get a more powerful weapon or attire, load it to their inventory via the circle menu, and they will choose it. They always choose the most powerful item in their inventory. And make sure you know which weapon they handle best--melee or ranged. Very impt.

I haven't gotten quite that far in the main quest yet. I got as far as the Legion Raid Camp and then returned back to Nipton with renewed determination to make the difficult crossing (after several previous failed attempts in which the worst was being attacked by a giant scorpion ) to the Mojave Outpost. I did meet Cass there. She seems...interesting. I imagine she might be more talkative after I take care of their little problem. Guess not. Well at the very least I know she is a verified companion at some distant point in this adventure.
Lots of useful info here people, nice to see the thread still active. 8-)

Warning; possible quest spoilers: Well, there are quite a few interesting quests to be done in Novac. You might already have picked up theSpoiler Alert "Ghouls at REPCONN" quest, which is also a Novac quest.
There's another one or 2 interesting ones there besides the MQ one, so make sure you speak to everybody, go into all the houses; even go up to the top of the dino and speak to the guy there,  Manny's fellow sniper guard) in case you spoke to Manny at night and found him in his bedroom.  And note the guy's name
PS. In case you hadn't noticed yet, names are quite important to take note of at Novac.

PS. How irritating that one cannot map movement to your mouse buttons. Because of this irritating feature, I sometimes switch to playing with my controller, but this particular game and controllers don't seem to go very well together. :

Link to radio mods (one says 32,000 songs, if I'm reading that right): http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/search.php
Gee, someone can actually have a worse mouth than Veronica? Ok...
Though I'm already sorry I traded Veronica for Boone. Much as I prefer melee mode in many hack 'n slashers, I prefer sniping and shooting in this particular game, because it has a lot of nice ranged weapons. So I really don't appreciate members of my party having to run up to the enemy for their attack.
Sadly Veronica seemed a bit down in the mouth when I asked her to move to ranged attacks. Plus she doesn't come with her own gun, whereas Boone does.

I prefer Rex, the sounds ED-E makes creeps me out Although Rex has a tendency to block your way indoors :
...
movetoqt is literally move to quest target, useful when you've done the quest already

I have no idea who Rex is, but I've been using ED-E almost since the start of the game now. I like him(it?) because he doesn't really bother you or get in your way. The little routine he plays when he shoots something is slightly wierd, but I'm used to already. (Is that what you mean? that little "melody" he plays when he's shot something?)
I'll not be using the movtoq in New Vegas yet, but it might come in handy when I reload my old saves/resume my replay in Oblivion or Morrowind; I presume the cheat codes are still the same... will check it out when needed, thanks for the tip.
@Halcyon: ED-E is worth it if your only current companion is a human, because it seems you're allowed one human and one non-human. He floats some way above and behind you, and shoots red laser beams at anything he thinks might be a threat to you; - he's been quite useful to me in areas where enemies were hiding behind cover so far.

Normally, I'm not big on having a companion. But New Vegas can be tough and help is needed often...and some mods are even harder.
September 1, I will start Oblivion fresh, to get into the spirit of Skyrim.

Re Boone, I'm wondering if, if I'd kept him with me, if a personal quest re his wife wouldn't have triggered. I'd be very interested in doing such a quest if it exists.

You won't lose ED-E as a companion, in fact he even gets upgraded at the end. I think this counts for every follower in the game, once you've done their personal quests they become better somehow.
As for Boone he has an extra quest once you've been able to recruit him. But you need to have done certain things while he's your companion, only then the quest will be triggered.
Rex also has the very useful perk ' Search and Mark' Spoiler Alert ammo and items show up green when you zoom in

There is one Boone quest. You must have done it already if he's your companion. Si? No?
I started Oblivion just before I started my "newbie in Oblivion" thread....in November of...2009 !! I"ve played through Oblivion four times already, including many mods that you have yet to savor.

Ok, back to NV. How on earth does one holster your gun? I keep talking to ppl with my gun in their faces, because I haven't been able to figure it out, and have been too embarassed to ask until now. :-[ However, it's really starting to bug me now...
oh, and re Boone:

Okay, I found out how you can discover what happened to Boone's wife. The spoiler below doesn't tell you what happened, just how to begin to unlock the info.
Spoiler AlertHave Boone as a follower through a few quests. Continue to talk with him.
