I put in a pre-order for the collector's edition of the next World of Warcraft expansion.

Yeah, I'm bad...

Well, that small dragon is quite cute, so I can't blame you.

There is nothing wrong with getting something that you want, and Blizzard's collectors editions are usually quite nice.

I have friends who have dressed up for previous WOW releases, one who put on his LARPing gear, and was the most realistic looking character in the queue (he lost the dressing competition though, as there was a girl dressed up as a sucubus in the line... not a very good costume either), and one who dressed up as a bloood elf (I don't know where she got the costume from). Are you going to do something similar, or is it enough to simply get the collectors edition?

What a bad boy indeed...

I just loovve bad people who make me feel a lot less guilty about my own occasional indulgences...   [smiley=cool.gif]

As for WOW, after seeing what it can do to people, my starter kit is still lying unopened packed away in the closet.  I had a friend who went off it cold turkey for almost 2 years, because it was messing up his life, he was so obsessive about it.  A while back he fell back hard into it, and when one would look for him at work, colleagues of his would whisper nudge roll eyes whisper that he was late/absent again because he'd been up all night again playing WOW.

Recently I heard he'd lost his job, and I'd lost contact with him, so I've been wondering how the poor guy's been holding up...

They should start a WOWholics Anonymous, it seems to be like heroin to some people.  Well, let's face it, videogaming itself tends to be pretty addictive...

...and let's not mention the Internet...

There have been talk about video game addiction hotlines over here, in part due to games like wow.

MMOs can be dangerous though. I have played quite a few in my days (Ultima Online, Everquest, Anarchy online, Guild wars, World of warcraft, Warhammer online, plus beta tested Tabula Rasa & Faith of mankind, but I have not played any MMO for quite some time now, simply because I got bored), and there were always some people who you could rely on being online whenever you logged on. They almost lived in front of their computers.

Having a very low tolerance for repetitive gameplay helps when it comes to not getting stuck in front of an MMO. Even though I was the main tank for my guild back during the original wow days (pre burning crusade), I flat out refused to grind for money, which in turn meant that I had no money for potions. My guild leader at the time complained a bit, but we actually did well. I simply played the games because it was fun to play with friends.

I blame the designers.

MMO's as a whole have turned into a "carrot on a stick" routine, simply doing repetitive grinding things for that next "uber" loot drop. All so they can keep players paying the monthly fee instead of actually trying to produce a game that the actual gameplay itself is the selling/drawing point rather then the next "uber loot."

Still, they can be fun in small spurts, usually with a new expansion or release, playing witha  group of friends.

Blizzard does hands down make the best CE's for games though. Nice huge box, lots of extra goodies and not your simple "making of" then digital only crap like most games do these days.

My WoW: CE is still sitting in my closest next to my other favorite CE, Ultima IX.

Sometimes wish I hadn't opened it though, the price of a WoW: CE hit over 1k a little while back. Though mine was signed from the devs so I plan to keep it.

Been itching to play a new mmo soon though, Guild Wars 2 seems the most interesting (Free to play still, but now it's an actual persistant open world, not just city hubs).

To try to steer this away from the 'MMOs are going to get you addicted and steal your soul' route (let's face it, the only time I spend playing it is the time regular folks would spend veging out in front of the tv), I'll also mention that I got a collector's edition of Elder Scrolls Oblivion when it came out.

What games do guy have Collector's editions of? What games would you like there to be CEs of?

You hit the nail on the head, there. I played only a bit of WoW and I didn't like it. However, I do play Guild Wars on and off - I have around 300 total gameplay hours collected for over 3 years (maybe 4?) The most I remember playing is 8 hours in one day. After that I got sick of it and didn't play for several months.

My brother is a WoW addict. It's so hard for me to understand - I watched him play a lot (it's the only way I can talk to him!) and it's just... nothing, useless grinding for items that all look the same to me. I LOVE pretty armour and minipets (that's why I still play GW - peacock feathers on my armour, oh my goddddddd!) but I don't think I'd ever be willing to grind into oblivion just to get an item that doesn't even exist. Oh well :/

New Wolfboy, to answer your question, I have The Witcher Enhanced Edition. It's amazing - an evidence that nothing but true love went into that game. I was blown away by the amount of making of video material (it's over 3 hours long!) and the design is pretty nice. My friend has a Collector's Edition and she showed me the artbook that came with it, it's gorgeous.

I wish there were CEs for adventure games. Especially a Syberia one, with an artbook and a little automaton action figure. Or a real Voralberg music box. As far as I'm concerned, ALL games should come with artbooks and action figurines

I used to play GW quite a bit back when it was first released. It really had a good mix of competitive & casual (you did not have to grind for hours in order to stand a chance against the "big boys", and its PvP really rewarded skill & teamwork, which suited me well). Sadly my friends left the game just before factions, so I did not have much of a reason to continue playing it seriously.

What games do guy have Collector's editions of? What games would you like there to be CEs of?

Morrowind (I have the small pewter figurine standing on my screen right now), Guild wars (original), Myst 4 & 5 (myst 4 had a really poor collectors edition, but it was cheaper than buying the standard edition), Pool of radiance (again because it was cheap, and you got a small model that I hoped would be useful in warhammer, sadly the one I got was so ugly that I still have not even glued it to its base).

I would like there to be a CE of the upcoming thief game (with something nice, not just a big action figure that I won't want to put on my shelf), Dungeon keeper 3 (and a dungeon keeper 3 is the first place) & Victoria 2.

My collector's editions are Morrowind (sold it some time ago after I bought the GOTY edition... Really regret that now), Myst 3 Exile and The Witcher Enhanced Editions.  Buying collector's editions is something I rarely do, because I can't tell which games I'm really going to love.

I started playing Guild Wars together with my wife right after its release in 2005 and after a year we had about 2000 gameplay hours each!

We also started playing WoW a little over a year after its release and made it to Level 52 of 60 within around ten weeks. But I quit because I didn't like the PvP and we also had some guild issues.

After that I took a long break in playing MMORPGs and only tried out some F2P titles but always got bored with them pretty fast.

Since our GW guild pretty much stopped playing and switsched to WoW me and my wife mostly played the GW expansions together alone or with pugs. We also started playing WoW on and off again - usually for one or two months before we take another few months off again. We  each have a Level 73 Char (of 80) and several in their 50ies.

What I wanted to say with all of this. The year 2005 and playing in a good guild with several nice people talking via Teamspeak with each other on a daily basis  was a nice time and experience that I don't want to miss. But(!) I won't join a serious guild at any MMORPG at all, anymore. It consumes much too much time and also one tends to take the game too serious. While playing Guild Wars or WoW for a weekend or some hours here and there just casually is taking much of the stress away. I don't like competition in a game I just want to have a nice time. So playing with other casuals or not joining a guild in the first place is taking much pressure away from those kind of games. Of course it also means one will never make it to the high level content / equipment, one has to accept that.
I can especially suggest Guild Wars - and I'm much looking forward at GW 2 - as an ideal game for casuals.

My ex neighbour is one of those WoW addicts and his constant playing for five years every day, many hours a day, did indeed cost his marriage even though his wife was playing as well but just not as much, so they drifted apart.

I agree, it's a good game for casuals. I am one. One of my main goals was to get the armour I wanted and, with a little help from a friend regarding a rare crafting material, I achieved that goal. I know I will never, ever be able to be in a 'serious' guild because then a game would become a chore. I'm looking forward to GW2, hoping solo-ing won't be too hard..

I hope they ad multiple difficulty levels to the game. Because of how, eh, poor most other people were at the game, I ended up playing almost exclusively with henchmen, which made the game incredibly easy. I finished the game with my Elementalist, monk, mesmer & warrior, and it was not particularly hard with any of them.
