Syberia and Syberia II rank very high on my list of most artistically pleasing and tastefully produced PC adventure games.
The Longest Journey and Riven are also masterfully rendered games.
For less-realistic styles, Grim Fandango is a minor work of art and Schizm boasts some wonderfully wild abstract designs.
There are many other good examples in this as well as other genres, but those are a few of my personal favorites.
Cheers, Terry

From a fantastical-world standpoint, all of the Cyan (Myst/Riven/URU), Detailion (Reah/Schizm/MJII/Sentinel), and Strecko (Aura/Sacred Rings) games are hard to beat.
For pure artistic "inventiveness", I thought Machinarium was outstanding.
Finally, for pure eye-candy, Heaven was certainly that (and I'm not just referring to Axis, the angel-babe!). The visuals were truly a delight, but too bad the game itself stunk to high-Heaven (pun intended). :-X

It's quite a retro game, so doesn't have the visual aesthetic as most games nowadays have. But the use of music, and the touching classical manner in which the story is told, drawn from so many influences, really works for me.
I also remember playing an interactive fiction game in which you play as one of several people who are attending a gallery exhibition for a deceased artist, and reminiscing about said artist through their own individual memories as triggered by the paintings. I can't remember the name for me, but I found it stunning.

URU CC fires my imagination and sense of realism and wonder. Some perspectives you can achieve race the heart.
I know this is about AG's, but some action games blow AG's out of the water. Oblivion for natural beauty and Fallout 3 for sheer scope and power and reality.
Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper was crazy gorgeous, if you like old London.

No, I found it. It's called 'Exhibition', and it was 5th place in the 1999 Interactive Fiction competition. http://www.wurb.com/if/game/311 In fact, a lot of the entries to the Interactive Fiction contest border on being classified as art. The only reason I can't name any more, is that I've not had the chance to play them all.
Inspired by remembering Loom, I re-installed a copy, and actually got the voice enhancement working. I'd forgotten entirely that it had an audio play prelude as well. For some reason, I have the memory of it being a rather short game (it seems most of the genuinely amazing games usually are, with perhaps The Longest Journey being the exception that lives up to its name), so I've set aside an evening this week to play it straight through and enjoy it all over again.

And I agree with the other games that have been mentioned so far -- Loom, the games from Cyan and Detalion. And though Machinarium was mentioned, Amanita's other games, like ***Samarost*** and ***Samarost 2*** also have an artistic look to them.

For its almost surreal design & interesting art Syberia (in particular 1) also deserves a spot on the list. And for its colourful & cheerful looks: Monkey Island 3 (there is something about the way that game looks that makes me smile).

For some original artwork, I appreciated this one too:

The "Myst" games tend to have interesting environments. The Last Express does have a very pleasing "Nouveau" arty look about it, doesn't it?
Whispered World almost has a similar look to the "Samorost" games for me, and I find playing it quite an atmospheric experience.
Cultura, you seem to have a keen eye for beauty - I've noticed it from the screenshots that you tend to post. I can certainly agree with you that Drawn is a very atmospheric and artistically pleasing game as well. For me, it has a haunting, wistful beauty about it.
That Syberia 1 & 2 is visually pleasing and satisfyingly atmospheric goes without saying, I should think. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

For the most beautiful games I've played overall, that would without a doubt have to be the Runaway series from Pendulo.

I also liked the look of the only 100% claymation adventure game, Neverhood. If you liked Machinarium, you'll love Neverhood.

I've taken quite a few shots during my recent playthrough of Runaway 3: A Twist of Fate. Cudos to Pendulo Studio for the graphics at least...I'll say no more...OK One really should play the first two episodes of the series as to not avoid the spoilers that are revealed in the final episode.

I know it's a cartoonish game but I've really enjoyed the series and I'm thankful to see all of it through it all till the end... Really?

There are better locations (in the big hub/temple and church) but couldn't find them on the www.
Very stylish, a bit sombre, lot's of work gone into that, even devising a lettering system (as in RiVen).
Wish I could get it to run on Vista or anything newer than W98..... No such luck.

I can run it on XP with several fixes i have found in research, and also found some mods that enhance game play as well, i posted about it all a while ago and have a fix pack here: (It requires a full authentic installation and use of authentic game disks).....
http://www.filefront.com/15841867/Omikiron-Fix-Kit.rar/
There is a tweaked EXE and also the two short movies that show for Eidos and then for the Cola both interfer with XP OP system operations, there are two dummy files for the movies that allow the game to start up normally. It is a wonderful game and I worked hard to get it to run on XP, you may have to adjust drivers if you have an FX card but it will work fine.

I'd also like to point out Black Mirror games - stunning backdrops!
