These marks are used by cartoonists.  What are they used to convey and what is each mark called?  Use spoiler tags when posting your answers.

Oooo....new trivia! A really interesting idea, too! I'll take a crack at what they convey. I don't think I could say what they're formally called, though.

1. Spoiler AlertJust general movement lines? Walking, gesturing, etc.
2.Spoiler Alert Speed lines, a way of depicting something moving fast.
3. Spoiler AlertSweat or tears? Frustration, surprise, or possibly an indication of exertion.
4. Spoiler AlertConfusion, perhaps a sign of being stunned after getting hit by something.
5.Spoiler AlertA cloud of dust, an indication of a quick burst of speed from standing still

You have all correct except #1, Andromus.  I won't give any hints yet.

Trav,
All are correct except #1, and #2 is right, but is usually used with people, not objects.

Edit:  I mean #4 is usually used with people.  You have the correct answer for #2.

Ok, is   #1 possibly Spoiler Alerttracks or.. -no not footprints - those have definite shape, hmm? ... hummm...- no I give up, I think...  slight slight hint for #1?

With #2 ,  Spoiler AlertI had meant also to elaborate that the "movement" often also indicates gestures, for instance if a person moves his arm, etc ?

I apologize.  I meant #4, not #2.  I edited my post above.

I'll post the answers tomorrow.

That's my usual state to one degree or another, Caroline, but these past few nights I've been reading until 3:00 AM and waking up much too early.  I know it's time for an early night when I start dropping things and losing my train of thought.

Now where was I and why are are these things all over the floor?

Answers:
Spoiler Alert1.  Dites make a window, mirror or metal surface look shiny.
2.  Hites show movement of a character or object.  They can be horizontal or vertical.  When they follow the contours of a body or object, they indicate shaking.
3.  Plewds are used to show a character's embarrassment or exertion.
4.  Splorts make a character look dazed or drunk.
5.  A Briffit shows fast movement or a quick burst of speed.

I have a set of these that I sometimes use with my rubber stamp cartoons.  I often wonder if they were named by Rich Hall who created sniglets, words that don't appear in the dictionary but should.

Very interesting, I didn't know those things had formal names. They all sound very appropriate to what they do, though.

Many of the tradditonal cartoonist marks have found their way into Japanese animation called Anime. The sweat mark for people with anxiety is one of the best known in that genre.
