Probably Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within.

Apart from that, the first time I played The Longest Journey. Very immersive. Or, wait, Syberia and its whole revealed culture. Or, the second time I played Dreamfall. Or was it the very first time I stood on the docks of Myst so very long ago....

I'm replaying Syberia at the moment, after many years, and I find it so beautiful and enchanting... however, a good part of that is nostalgia and the fact that I connected certain locations in the game to some locations from real life. Not sure if I made sense there.

For me it comes down to a choice between Myst (for introducing me to a new and wonderful kind of adventure game), Riven (for its detailed world that meshed beautifully with its elegant puzzles) or Obsidian (for its imaginative environments and puzzles with an almost perfect level of difficulty and excellent use of lateral thinking). Then there's Day of the Tentacle or Gabriel Knight 1...well, you did say one game, didn't you?
Then I'll have to pick Riven.

| Deleted User | I love to play AG's most and foremost to seek out and experience the story beyond the obvious. For the most part I would have to say that TLJ offered one of the best adventures and the best endgame that I can recall. I'd have to give it my first choice. Sadly these days it seems that ending a game without a solid sense of achievement and or a culminating story conclusion doesn't appear to be hip. Sadly I really wish that wasn't the case.

Almost exactly what he said.

Games in the AG genre that I enjoyed most are harder to pin down, perhaps because they all end at some point. The games I mentioned above, (especially the 1st 2) you can carry on playing forever, so they'd be my choice for if I was stranded on a desert island for a few years.
Adventurewise it would probably be a tie between The Awakened and Sherlock Holmes Nemesis, and if it had not been that I got stuck for so long in Gabriel knight 2, thereby causing excessive frustration, I would have said Gabe Knight 2, perhaps.

For any game in general: Probably Ultima Online. While the game itself might not be great, I made a lot of friends while playing it, and it had a great community. I also played it for quite some time.

It kept me occupied for 3 months or so. I loved moving through the environments - there was always detail that was new to me. About 3 years later, I played it again, and this time I had access to the internet and was a bit more comfortable with technology, but it will always be that 1st game experience that was miraculous for me. To this day whenever I hear a chicadee, it reminds me of the island paths near the axe, and the gate to the jungle.

As this was pre-interent it took me months to finish and the puzzles would occupy my mind while doing the dishes etc. Truly an immersive experience.
But for laughter and friendship and exploration it would need to be UruLive.

I played it with friends, and we used the little hint book and drew elaborate maps of the minotaur maze. 8-)

Myst was very atmospheric -- a great combination of sound with visuals. I'll never forget being lost in Channelwood. I got some of the same experience exploring Edanna in Myst III: Exile and Brada Coe in Schizm 2 (especially at night). I like being transported to mysterious other realms, and the background sound/music is just as important as the visuals.

Non-adventure wise I would say Oblivion (infinite hours of pleasure) and The Witcher (one of the most compelling RPG stories ever).
Playing: Skyrim (ongoing)
Last Finished: can't recall, been too long.

That's very interesting. I found that area memorable as well for its ambient sounds, although in my case it was the crickets that stood out. They reminded me of a lazy summer day at home. Sometimes when I needed a break from the game I would go up there and just listen for bit.

It was at the time of its creation the largest wireframe yet made for any CGI creation. It took years to make, and indeed they spent, Robyn and Richard Vander Wende (former production director of Aladdin)...spent a year alone just creating the backstory and the languages, artistic styles and themes of the D'ni and the people of Riven... it was a remarkable creation. A new format version of Riven is underway at Cyan now.

At Mysterium last week, a very talented community member announced he and a team have been working on a fully 3D version of Riven, Real Riven, for a year.

starryexpanse dot com Can this be? ( quickly checks the date...... nope, not April 1) If was only allowed to play 1 more game ever, but it could be anything, it would be RealRiven. Darn! I'm leaving in a few hours for a one week trip to Newfoundland. I'll have to wait until I'm back to hear more.

Chris, you tell Robyn Miller that I know several avvies in the Cavern who've all said they dream of being able to run around in Riven with buddies. What colossal fun that would be.
Can you imagine the fun finding the exploits?
