...... and I don't mean ones given to you as a gift.
There are tons of free games - escape-type, 3rd person, puzzle - but which ones have you played that were so good, you would have paid for them?
My list:
Fool's Errand - kept me occupied for weeks. I guess it's mostly a puzzle game, but I really felt like a detective, working through the verses and using logic to solve the larger puzzle.
http://www.fools-errand.com/
In Cubation - an escape game that had lots to explore and very Rhem-like puzzles
http://www.z3online.com/incubation/
Amertis - I'm playing this now and it's quite fun, with a continental flare. I can understand French, so I'm picking up a lot of nuances that the subtitles just don't do justice to. It's essentially a Myst clone - transport books and all.
http://www.amertis.org/welcome.html
Uru Live - in itself a lot of quality gameplay, with the option of social interaction.

Wasn't 'The Blackwell Legacy' made free? If not, then I loved 'The White Chamber'.

Blackwell wasn't, but it is a remake/sequel of Bestowers of Eternity. Bestowers was a pretty good game, but had many faults, the worst of which was having no ending.
The Shivah was originally freeware. Now there is a $5 Deluxe edition with voice acting and better graphics.
I didn't like The Shivah much, it felt like it was trying too hard to be dark. Many people liked it, though.

Some other memorable games:
Five Magical Amulets - Lengthy, good music, nice graphics, and an interesting world.
Mental Repairs, Inc. - An interesting concept coupled with lovely graphics. Could've been a bit longer, but otherwise a great game.
Ben Jordan Series - A series that just keeps getting better.

Dear Colpet - you're a treasure.  I haven't played any of these free games but without a doubt, the very best free game I have played is Uru online.

I'll second The Fool's Errand, indeed, anything by Cliff Johnson at all.

I'm glad to be reminded about InCubation and Amertis, I've been meaning to play those but had forgotten about them.

A couple additions:

Other Worlds -- Classic style adventure. Quite long, interesting story and puzzles.

System's Twilight -- Inspired by the Cliff Johnson games but much more challenging in spots. Great puzzles, many of them unique.

I'll say this, http://www.reloaded.org/ has a great selection of free-distribution games. Just 'cause, I wanna be helpful and all.

I really enjoyed Frasse and the Peas of Kejick and the original Samorost game, and I'll put in another vote for Cliff Johnson's games.

Thanks for the heads up on System's Twilight, Andromus.

Ooh...

First of all, I to recommend The Fool's Errand - it is, I think, a favourite of mine - and the Ben Jordan series (in which case I recommend going for the "deluxe" editions of the first two games, which, as I recall, feature new graphics and extended gameplay).

As to Other Worlds, if I recall it correctly, then I think that I did enjoy it... up to the twist at the end, which is an instance of a particular trope that I happen to tend to dislike.

Thank you for mentioning System's Twilight, Andromus - it looks and reads as being rather interesting, both in your description and on the game's page, I believe.  I've downloaded it (and Executor in order to run it) and rather look forward to giving it a try! ^_^

As for my own recommendations, as I recall them:

Eternally Us
- Short, fairly simple, and perhaps a little anvilicious, but otherwise lovely and very well done.

The Museum of Broken Memories
- A perhaps somewhat twisted, decidedly strange exploration of what seem to be fragments of memory, each different, although a number of common themes (war, a great machine, and a dark power - those last two perhaps the same, and named "Urizen"
.  Overall, wonderfully strange, I think.

Spooks - This is a wonderful little adventure in the Land of the Dead, following a little ghoul named "Mortia" and her quest to find a safe place for her strange new companion, a "living" creature (a fish, in fact), and to find out what this curious thing called "life" is...  But it seems that those in power don't want the residents of the Land of the Dead to find out about "life"...  All in all, a thoroughly good and delightfully twisted little tale.

The Marionette - A very well-crafted horror game, I feel.  You play as Martin, a sculptor, who finds himself at a strange house in mysterious circumstances, and who is soon to find that his situation is stranger - and darker - than it appears at first.  To say more might risk spoiling a story that I think is worth not spoiling...

Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! - And now for something completely different: a light-hearted and delightful adventure following the eponymous pirate girl Nelly Cootlaot as she attempts to find out what became of the spoonbeaks of the Barony of Meeth.

Quest for Glory 2 VGA - Simply put, an instance of a fan-remake that I have little to no hesitation of playing in place of the original game.  The story and puzzles seem to all be intact (with two new mini-games, I think, and some nice little random sightings on the streets of Shapier), the graphics are very well-done, and the game seems to import and export characters correctly from the previous game and to the next, I believe.

I'm tempted to include The Chzo Mythos (a horror series by "Yahtzee" Croshaw. of Zero Punctuation fame, and not for those easily bothered by horror, I don't believe), but it has been a while since I played the earlier games, and I have read accounts indicating that they might be a little rougher than I remember.

MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

*ahem*

Sorry.

Let me know how you get on with that, Thaumaturge. I would really like to play it, but the pages of instructions scare me.

Fair enough - I'll hopefully remember to post again when I have further information to pass on. ^_^

I haven't yet begun to play (although I intend to do so presently!), but setting it up was pretty much painless, I think.  The only caveat that I have is that if, like me, you don't have an appropriate unzipping utility to run in Executor, to remember during the installation of Executor to select (or not unselect) the unzipping utility demo that I think should come with it.

Otherwise I think that I found the instructions to be quite easy to follow and they seem to have worked as described. ^_^

My personal freeware adventure favourites are:

Cedric and the Revolution: (reminiscent of Sam n Max, Dott)
Duty and Beyond: (reminiscent of Future Wars)

Both are awesome adventures, Cedric is a bit short though.

Atlantzone - earlier game from the makers of Amertis. Main character is the same i.e. Rodrigues Grandcoeur. Both well worth playing.

There are two games titled Soviet Unterzoegersdorf. Sectors 1 & 2. They are both worth playing. Save often!  [smiley=wink.gif]
