The shipping costs for a hard copy can often double the cost of a game (at least for me, probably because I live in Canada).
So far, Rhem 4 looks absolutely massive. Note-taking started approximately 30 seconds after the game began

I like being able to replay my games a few years down the road with a minimum of hassle and without having to repurchase or depend on an activation server that may no longer be there. Not all games are worth replaying, but the RHEM games are.

Hard copy versions can have the exact same problems. The Rhem games are absolutely worth replaying, I agree with you there!

Status : Online | My wife and I couldn't wait any longer. We downloaded it this past weekend and have been devouring it every waking hour since (darn work is getting in the way today though)!
The game is incredible just like the first three: absolutely huge and complex. The primary goal of this one seems to be to find nine "fragments" of a golden key. We have been playing for over nine hours now and we have not collected a single fragment yet!
We know where, most likely, a few of them are securely locked away, but we have yet to solve puzzles deep enough to unlock any of them.
Truly, Knut is the king of puzzles!! We are really going to have some serious withdrawls once we finish this game knowing it is the last one (flashback to Myst 5). :-/
But, until then, we are in puzzle Nirvana!!

My wife and I have found 3. Knowing how devious and sadistic the previous games were has helped immensely. In the previous games the logic was occasionally stretched and a few puzzles absurdly complicated. This time the logic is always there, for the observant and the cunning. It's incredibly well put together. It's nonlinear with tons of stuff to do, look at and think about. We haven't hit a single point where we say "We have absolutely no idea what to do now." It's an absolute masterpiece for those who like puzzle games.
I hesitate to call it flawless because there is one element of randomness that is tedious, time-consuming and kills the flow of an otherwise brilliant game.

Different limitations perhaps, but exact same problems? I think not.

You are welcome to believe buying a hard copy version will avoid activation codes issues if it makes you feel better.
Any software that I purchase and download to a hard drive I will be able to play forever, with no activation code concerns (barring operating system changes, of course). Any software that is installed via an automated process (like Impulse) I have major hangups with, because I'm entirely at the mercy of a company that could disappear and leave me unable to play the games I purchased.

Apparently, you are aware of a number of commercial adventure game hard copy releases that have activation codes (ie. purchaser must have an online connection when installing the game for the first time). Please list some.

I have good news for you then. As i posted in a different thread, i have exchanged a few emails with Knut last year and Rhem 4 won't be the last one. At least, that is what he said then and i don't think he has changed his mind.
And yes, Knut really is the king of puzzles :-)

That is good new indeed! I was under the assumption that this one was going to be the last. Can't remember where I heard that.
I was just going to hope that Knut would eventually release a "Complete Chronicles" edition where he links all four areas together into one gigantic game (maybe even with tweaked puzzle combinations so that you couldn't just use your notes from previous plays). Now wouldn't that be hoot to play through! But, then, I'm also waiting for the "holodeck" version of the game.
BTW: My wife and I are up over 20 hours of gameplay and we've found four out of the nine fragments (and we know where the rest are). So, unfortunately, the end is in sight. But, what a ride it has been so far!

Status : Online | Sorry for the long delay. My wife and I finally just finished this marvelous game! Not all of this lapsed time was devoted to the game, though. There was an entire week where we had to put the game aside while I went on a business trip (darn work again! >).
Our elapsed game-time clock finished at about 50 hours. So, yes, we got horrendously stuck a few times. Like the Grinch, we puzzed til our puzzlers were sore and we got ourselves unstuck on numerous occasions just through sheer perseverence.
However, I hate to say it, we did need two small hints from a walkthrough to finish this one. :'(
One was just a missed hotspot that escaped our higher-than-usual dilligence that we employ just for RHEM games.
The second one, however, came at the very end of the game when we were left with just one last fragment to collect. We knew where it was, what we needed to do to get to it, and identified the one remaining clue in our notes that should have enabled us to solve it. Unfortunately, we could just not get it. We came up with and tried a whole slew of possible solutions and a bunch of absurd solutions to boot. After hours of second-guessing ourselves, we threw in the towel and peeked. We then proceeded to smack ourselves on our foreheads with the typical: "I can't believe we didn't try that!" [smiley=doh.gif] It turns out, when we first encountered the puzzle, my wife casually came up with the eventual solution, but we never went back and actually try it. All sorts of subsequent observations and "imagined clues" moved us well beyond my wife's original supposition.
In RHEM 1, 2, and 3 combined, my wife and I only needed one hint to proceed (in RHEM3 on the hideous birdsong and leaves puzzle where we could not, for the life of us, distinguish between the sounds of the birds).
So, does this make RHEM4 the "worst" of the RHEM games then? ABSOLUTELY NOT! In fact, just the opposite. It doesn't quite unseat RHEM2 as our favorite, but pretty close. But then again, all four of them combined come pretty darn close to unseating Riven at top of our all-around list! RHEM5 might just get us over the hump! Thanks Knut!! [smiley=clap.gif]

Status : Online | Hi, new here Downlaoded RHEM 4 and love playing it; it's like being back with an old friend; playing RHEM 2 and 3 definitely helps; I'm not rushing through it; slowly savoring every delicious puzzle and new area; have not found one fragment yet but RHEM requires patience; I resolved I will not look at one walkthrough this time.

Status : Offline | Thomasbc, congratulations to you and your wife for solving the game. You must be a really good puzzle solver if you only needed the walkthrough twice and solved Rhem 1-3 with only one hint.
Before Rhem IV, i considered myself a good puzzle solver as well (Rhem 2+3 without any hints), but i am not so sure about that anymore I have already played almost 30 hours and only have found 3 fragments so far. Now i am totally stuck. I am not sure why, but somehow Rhem IV is more difficult for me than the other Rhem games. No matter at which location i am, I never know whether i don't see a conenction or i still need a missing hint.
What interests me the most is why you consider Rhem II better than Rhem IV. I am not sure yet, but i tend to agree. I mean, i love Rhem IV so far, it is definitly better than Rhem III and it's a fantastic game but i somehow feel that Rhem II was a tiny bit better in the puzzle department but i cannot qualify(?) that. I am really interested in your answer about that.
So, back to the game :-)
Edit: For the record, I have to correct myself. I am not so sure that Rhem 4 is better than Rhem III anymore, i would have to replay Rhem III. The statement above was a little hasty.

Status : Online | As to which is better, I think you have to take each game on its own; I always felt intimidated by RHEM 2; maybe it was the claustrophoblic atmosphere of the caves; maybe it was the creepy lava room or the glass maze; I never felt clear as to what to do next and had to resort to walkthroughs several times; of course, that was my first RHEM experience; RHEM 3 was more fun to play; it had the great combination of above ground, below ground and different atmospheres; I learned you must look at the back of every door once you open it and if theres an elevator, you better find a way to look at its bottom side for clues; if theres two ways to get to a place, theres always a reason; with RHEM 4 I am making clear and steady progress, only getting "blocked" every now and then; I feel it's more logically "planned" and I know pretty much what I need to do next and where to go next; I havent yet got that "totally lost, bewildered, need to run to a walkthrough" feeling.
