Deleted UserWell then Lady K, I do hope you are able to put this one down at a reasonable hour, or perhaps not.
The final book really delves into Lisbeth Salanders past but I probably shouldn't say any more.  I've listened to the audio versions of all three and it is indeed a remarkable series. I thought Reg Keeland's translation from the Swedish masterful. OK, what I meant to say is that I would never have suspected it wasn't originally penned in English. :-X

I see that Colpet is right, there is to be a US remake but I just don't see the point. (other than simply to make more money)  The original film dubbed in English worked just fine with me even though it is a movie and many parts from the book are overlooked but in this case none of the important parts.

Saw Avatar (the re-released 3D version with 9 extra minutes) for the first time. Pretty impressive. Enjoyed it for the most part. Based on some of the flora and fauna, James Cameron must have played the Myst series!

One or two gripes: Surely, given all the advanced technology, Signourney Weaver would be smoking a form of cigarette different than the present one -if she would be smoking at all. Also, James Horner's soundtrack was surprisingly bland. Not a memorable melody to be found anywhere. Must have used up his last one in Titanic. The movie (IMO) really needed something like the music in Dragonheart (often heard during the Olympics or for movie trailers).

The future ain't what it used to be!

Except for some of the similar names used in the stories, which got me a bit confused in the second book, these are some of the best mysteries I've ever read.  I was only up until 2:00 AM yesterday morning reading the third one, and I'm just about to shut down the computer and jump back into it.

Got stood up by friends I was going to be gaming with this weekend, and since I had to go past the DVD rental place, I decided to drown my sorrows in some movies.

So far I've watched "The Golden Compass" and "Twilight".  I was quite taken with the Golden Compass at first, feeling glad that at last I'd get a good idea of the story, since I'd been struggling to get "into" the book, but was pretty disappointed by the cliffhanger ending.

I almost laughed halfway through Twilight since it was so cliche (which I had been expecting, of course), but I thought it was even more cliche than I'd thought it could be, although later on it did seem to get a slight twist on the usual "Tortured Noble Vampire" theme.

I haven't touched the book, but I think I'd like to see the rest of the movies, since I found this one to be pretty visually pleasing.  I would watch this movie again purely for the breathtaking beauty of the Washington countryside to be seen in the film.  I often found myself wanting to pause the movie just to stare in awe at the natural beauty of the setting and wishing I could smell and experience the woods, waterfalls etc. for myself.

Next up:  Stardust.

I enjoyed reading The Golden Compass and the other two books in the trilogy.  I do remember seeing and liking the previews for the movie, but someone else had said it was a letdown, so I never got around to it.  It's one I still want to see.

I think you'll like Stardust.  It's a bit different from the book but still captures Gaiman's magic.

I know a 13-year-old and a 30-year-old who simply adore everything Twilight, but  I agree with you that the vampire with a heart of gold has been done to death (ahem) and was much better in previous incarnations (Moonlight, Buffy, Angel).  This one is just dark looks with moon eyes and not very good acting on the whole.

Golden Compass was a damn shame. Lovely series of books, and given such weak treatment by Hollywood.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!    [smiley=hair_pull.gif]  [smiley=hair_pull.gif]   [smiley=hair_pull.gif]    [smiley=furious.gif]  I was planning to go and see Inception today, it was still showing in the week, and now I see I've just missed it due to this stupid eye and neck rubbish of mine..  [smiley=cry.gif]  Totally infuriating  - I was so looking forward to it with all the hype that's been going on...

*Takes a deep breath*
Anyway, the only other thing that might catch my interest currently showing might be The Sorcerer's Apprentice.  Has anyone here seen it ?

I just finished watching the anime series Avatar the Last Airbender for the firth time, all the way thru, took about a week, and love it as always, it remains one of the masterpieces of modern animation. the movie is so bad i ignore its existence totally for hollyweird and the asian version of it both suck at translating such great stories. they just never will do a decent job on just about any story.

i am deep in study of many other anime series and have found some fun ones but none that i like as much as Avatar yet.  sorry about you misssing that movie Trav, i have not see Twilight yet, will check that out.

I have the Golden compass movie and may check it out.

You say The Last Airbender is good?  There is a brand-new just-released 3D "realistic" movie of it currently showing, tho it rated lower than Sorcerer's Apprentice on IMDB when I checked.

The latter is Disney, which shouts "kiddie" to me, but then there is also an age restriction on it, and Disney's done a few good ones too.  Hrrrmm...

The Last Airbender series (aired on nickelodeon, also available on netflix's Instant queue) was great. I actually figured it'd be quite "kiddified" but it was actually quite enjoyable for me as an adult. One of the best animation/anime series in a long time.

The movie from M. Night got terrible reviews though, and doesn't stick to the show's storyline/characters very well either.

Cris, I'm not sure what types of anime you might like (I assume you prolly don't care for the ones with graphic violence/blood, etc) but i'd highly recommend checking out:

Grave of the Fireflies (make sure you have some tissues handy)
Haibane Renmei
Ponyo
Now and Then Here and There
Spirited away
Howl's Moving Castle
My neighbor Totoro

Not quite 'anime', but I've recently become rather hooked on an animated show, from which I've procured my current avatar. See if you can guess.

I quite enjoyed Starship operators & Planetes. The former is about a crew on a battleship that sells itself to media in order to finance their war as "freedom fighters" (or terrorists, depending on how you view it). The second one is about a low sci-fi series about a group of people who make their living by removing junk from earths orbit.

Then there are the short films by Makoto Shinkai, all of which I found to be really good. Voices of a distant star nearly made me cry (which is the first and only film to be able to do that to date). 5 Centimeters Per Second & The Place Promised in Our Early Days are also two absolutely stunning pieces of work.

I've just seen the trailer for the next Harry Potter.  And guess what?  It's in 3D.
I'm so looking forward to this.  And no, I haven't read the books so please, nobody tell me how it ends.   :

I won't spoil it for you, Caroline, but I have in good faith that Hagrid cuts a big one and blows everyone right off the island.

Class dismissed.

Really? A movie being made in 3D, in this day and age? Who'd'a thunk it?
Really, this marketing gimmick was getting old i the 50s, and again in the 80s... why does it keep making flash-in-the-pan comebacks?

Because they've made a new camera.  And in this day and age, people like new gimmicks.  I too, like 3D.

3-D really seems to be in fashion; every second movie seems to be 3-D - well, action movies, anyway.

Well, so I went to see Avatar: The Last Airbender 3-D, and since I have not watched the animated series, so can't compare, I pretty much liked it, especially as far as story and premise goes.
A lot of Bhuddist concepts in there it seems.

Visually it was pleasing too, just the acting that wasn't always stellar...

I also saw Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.  Well, I feel pretty confident that if you love the POP games, you will also enjoy this movie, which seemed to have pretty much enough running, shooting, jumping and swinging (well, perhaps not as much swinging as in the games), with swordplay and nasty snakes and assasins thrown in, to boot.

Quite entertaining.

Oh, and don't forget the princess... - she was there too...   [smiley=laughing.gif]

I find it very hard to watch Star Trek. It reminds me that around 80% of my favorate actors in the entire world are either deceased, or will be very, very soon. It's so depressing.  :-[

Yesterday my brothers and I watched a very good suspense/horror movi called "Frozen.  The premise is simple: three friends (Dan, his girlfriend Parker and his best friend Joe) go skiing on a Sunday.  Not willing to pay the price of lift tickets, they bribe the operator to take them up for less money.  They ski for the day, and decide late at night they'll go for one more run.  The chair lift is about to close down, but they manage to convince the operator to let them up one last time.

Long story short, they end up being forgotten half-way up the mountain, with the hill closed down until the next Friday.  With no hope of rescue.

I really enjoyed the movie immensely.  It's a serious tale, about a very mundane yet plausible (and horrifying, for someone like me who has skied in the past) life-or-death situation.  The acting was competent, the script moved nicely, the musical cues set the tone perfectly, and there was lots and lots of lovely white snow.  I'd highly recommend it to anyway not afraid of a little dramatised hardship.  8-)

I just couldn't take the movie seriously when:

Spoiler AlertThe wolves showed up and ate two of the guys. For one, wolves are territorial and they wouldn't have a place like a ski park, which is often busy with people be a place where to go to hunt, etc. Then you have them attacking people. One guy who's hurt, I can see if the wolves are hungry (Even though they wouldn't logically be there in the first place). However attacking an uninjured person who has a weapon in his hand, not normally going to happen.

It was just another movie that villainfied wolves and made them out to be man-eating animals when they normally aren't.

The premise of the movie was good, and I liked some of the character interaction, etc and issues of what to do in that situation, but that one aspect just ruined it for me really. As soon as I saw it I just rolled my eyes and knew what was coming.
