Looks pretty much identical to Rhem 3.

Doesn't matter though. I don't play the Rhem games for the graphics, I play them for the incredibly well-designed logic-based puzzles.

New Title shows as Rhem 4: The Golden Fragments on Knut's web page.  http://www.rhem-game.com/ From all that I have read and the screenshots that have been released it looks as if Rhem 4 may be a romp through all the areas of 1 - 2 & 3 and then some in search of Golden Fragments that will enable the player to fire up a transportation system that will finally free you from the land of Rhem. If this is true then Rhem 4 will be massive in the size of areas to explore.

Can't wait for the game but I also am excited for the release of Rhem Trilogy. The first 3 games boxed which is scheduled to precede the release of Rhem 4 on August 20th. A perfect fit for the collection. http://www.mamba-games.co.uk/rhem-trilogy-p-60.html

I am glad his series is continuing, it looks just like Myst..

i admit tho, puzzles and empty worlds no longer attract me, i like to have people NPCs and other characters around me.... and the empy cerebral world is not my cup of tea. I like to explore and DO things.

but i am glad it is doing well and people enjoy these.

I'm really looking forward to this one.  I recognize some spots from Rhem 1 in those screenshots, especially the last one.  I was stuck on those water pipes for quite a while.

Your quote is exactly the opposite of how my tastes in games have become. I no longer enjoy the games with NPC's and much prefer the solo exploration that these first person games bring me. And I believe this is to be the last Rhem game in the series. At least that is what I heard. I am hoping though that Knut just wants to end the Rhem games because he has ideas for a new brand of game.

For the past 15 years I've only wanted to play the kind of game where I'm a solitary explorer, pitting my wits against fiendish puzzles.  I even avoided games where there were too many CG characters or those dreaded conversation trees.

However, playing UruLive has changed all that.  It's so much fun running around with buddies.   The banter and the games we get upto, chatting with players from around the world.... nothing beats it.

I'm currently replaying Riven - my favourite game - but I'm lonely.  I wish I could have my buddies in there with me, all crowded into the cable cars and fiddling with stuff and running around.

I enjoy meeting real players with avatars in a game from a social standpoint, but would rather concentrate on puzzles at my own speed. No two people work the same way, and I like to take my time and keep copious notes. The exception would be the puzzles that need 2 or more people to physically work out.
When it comes to other NPCs in a game - I'd rather be alone. So , like Greyfuss, I'm craving a good solitary puzzle experience. I'm sad to think that this will be the last Rhem, but hopeful Knut will continue with another series along the same lines.

i've always ignored the RHEM series, thinking it was another Myst clone.
Reading reviews, it seems i'm wrong. So i'm probably picking up the trilogy soon

It's more of a "Riven clone" because you stay in the same world all the time instead of moving between different "Ages."

These Screenies look superb! They look like stuff from Rhem 1. Now I'm wondering - in what ways is Rhem 4 different than Rhem 1? I still have my Rhem 1 game, and am holding onto it - is it really worth buying Rhem 4 even if the screenshots look like Rhem 1's screenshots? Why do you guys think it's worth it?

Colpet, how do you know that Rhem 4 will be the last Rhem in the series - who told you this?

BTW, glad to see the Rhem trilogy being released. I know that people have been having a hard time finding Rhem 1. I have the original Rhem 1 produced by Knut - came on 3 discs. Then I bought the boxed version by Got Game. It was tricky to run. Guess I'll be getting a third game (the trilogy) as well
. Can't have enough Rhem games.

which is good, because i never liked the idea that there's absolutely no connection of the puzzles between the ages.

I found that NPCs are often overused in an attempt to compensate for a shallow, puzzle-lite game.

Talk to NPC
Explore, find an obstacle.
Talk to NPC to get solution.
Solve puzzle.
Talk to different NPC to advance plot.

Rhem has none of that silliness. All the puzzles are logical. On rare occasions the logic is a bit stretched, but nothing like the sheer sadism of some of the Myst puzzles.

I partially agree with Caseus. NPCs should either drive the plot forward when you talk to them or be a well integrated and logical parts of puzzles, or both. Far too often they are nothing more than poorly integrated part of "fetch quests" of some kind. That being said, I enjoy it when NPCs are used properly, and I don't think that they should stop using them.

Oh, and I should really pick up the rhem trilogy. Myst is still my favorite AG series, and I like myst like games.

Hi guys,

it's me, mike from www.savegameserver.com
I'm from germany and have exchanged a few emails with Knut Müller over the last months (Jochen and i sent him feedback on Rhem II). Knut is german as well which makes the exchange of ideas (mostly about the puzzles) much easier. He really is a nice guy.

He told me that Rhem 4 won't be the last game of the series, so the information above is not correct. I have no idea how many Rhem games he will make in the future but he doesn't intend to stop with Rhem 4.

And yes, Andrew Plotkin's review of Rhem is good, but his review of
Rhem II is even better, it's one of the best reviews i have ever read.
I really recommend reading it.

Cheers
Mike

I, for one, sure hope that you are right Mike. Thanks for the great games Knut, keep them coming. Looking forward to seeing a second Trilogy release of Rhem 4 - 5 & 6 in the future.

You're welcome

I can't wait to play Rhem IV myself.

The puzzles in Rhem 2 were superb, I completely agree with Andrew Plotkin ( http://www.eblong.com/zarf/gamerev/rhem2.html ):

'The author has systematically analyzed the ways that players absorb information from adventure games, and done his best to bend every one in as many different directions as it will go.'

In fact, i think he has mastered this aspect of puzzle design better than anyone else.
