*edit* Plenty of games added to the list. It should be enough to keep anyone occupied for a long time.

and Dragonsphere is free now from GOG but I am not sure for how long that will be...

Mautpiti Island Race into Space - XP stand alone Buzz Aldrin's Race into Space [BARIS] Ur-Quan Masters - XP Star Control X-Com Gold - XP stand alone Red Baron - has been free for a long time
I think all the games at Home of the Underdogs are free [mostly dos/very early W95 era], in the sense that the publisher/developers/designs officially let them go per the Digital Copyright agreement of some years back. HOTU pulled all download links from titles that any developer maintained a claim. The site is not actively maintained anymore but still runs:

The term basically means that it is software that the creators/publishers don't really care about anymore, but it is not a legal term, the software still has owners, and they might not actually allow the software to be free. The whole abandonware question is a matter of law vs morals. It might not be morally wrong to download abandonware, but it is not technically speaking legal. (For the record, my stance on abandonware is that i think that it is okay). The underdogs was always an openly illegal site, offering illegal downloads, until someone told them that they should take down a game. I don't think anyone were trying to take legal actions against the site though, as it a: would have generated a lot of badwill, and b: They always complied with companies that did not want their games up for download.
That is the old underdogs site, and it does not have any games up for download anymore. There is a more recent attempt to re-build the underdogs, going under the name hotud (I don't know what the mods would think of me if I posted a direct link to it though).
I'm running out of space in the first post. I've had to cut all of the fluff text, and I'll probably have to start post future links in other posts soon.
I could only find a "safe" site for race into space. The Ur-Quan Masters was already in the first post, though I might have put it under the wrong category.

Status : Offline | Interesting regarding HOTU and it's upstart. I was always under the impression it willingly took down dl links after the Digital Millenium Copyright act went into effect that clarified the status of much of this stuff. And you're totally right about all the links being down now.
As to this sort of thing I'm not especially worried about it either; long dormant 15-20 year old games live on largely thru the efforts of dedicated fans, collectors and affionados doing stuff like this [for no $] - though I know it's a 'red flag' issue for some. But enough original developers have been touched by the continuing interest in their work, some even encouraging it, to summarily write the whole practice off.
re Race Into Space this link is a good hub to the project and probably the one you refer to: http://www.raceintospace.org/. I also picked up the original boxed w/ guide on eBay - quite a feast of supporting material.

I didn't realize it had the blessing of the System Shock design team, so I'm assuming it's pretty good then. I'll have to give it a try.

It is possible that it only got the blessing from one or two members, but from what I have heard (and I won't guarantee that it is true), they did contact some of them, and got thumbs up, and the plug has not been pulled. It is not really a remake though, it is just an upgrade of the original, based on the original CD version.
I also had issues with the interface of the original game. Far more so in System shock than in Ultima underworld, even though their controls are rather similar. I'll make sure that I get the chance to play through the game properly this time around.

Yes TF2 is a great mulitplayer shooter, if you enjoy those.
Lots of people playing it all the time, plenty of good servers with admins that do what they need to do.
