Correct. LOTRO's free areas are roughly what I remember playing through back when I did the free trial. So free to play doesn't offer much of an advantage there. I keep it installed though because I do enjoy visiting the Shire every once in awhile, wonderful graphical environment.

In the line of free MMO's I've recently started Champions, which offers a surprising amount to do for free. Unfortunately most of it isn't that challenging. A couple of weeks of play found my character at level 20 (out of 40).

Trav if you get very daring, try the mods for MW by Vort, they are lovely and you dont need to wrestle with the Direct and Dynamic Shadows MGE mod we were talking about a while ago. Have fun, i still have MW loaded just have not had the time with other research.

I edited the first post and tried to group games of roughly the same genre together. I might have made some mistake(s), if so please tell me (as I have not played all games).

*edit* Plenty of games added to the list. It should be enough to keep anyone occupied for a long time.

A few more games added, including Marathon (one of bungies earlier games). Anyone who have any more games to add to the list?

I'd put League of Legends in the RTS list, it's not action like GTA or anything.

I can't seem to be able to access pirate ships. The site claims that I need an account for temporary free play.

Added Frogatto & friends to the list in the first post.

Aurora was added to the first post. Imagine a mix between Stars! and Dwarf fortress. That is Aurora. It is well worth checking out.

I believe Battlecruiser 3000 may be free now, i seem to recall that it is, not the Gold version with additional planets and campaigns but the original game may in fact be free now.

and Dragonsphere is free now from GOG but I am not sure for how long that will be...

I don't think these were mentioned:

Mautpiti Island
Race into Space - XP stand alone Buzz Aldrin's Race into Space [BARIS]
Ur-Quan Masters - XP Star Control
X-Com Gold - XP stand alone
Red Baron - has been free for a long time

I think all the games at Home of the Underdogs are free [mostly dos/very early W95 era], in the sense that the publisher/developers/designs officially let them go per the Digital Copyright agreement of some years back. HOTU pulled all download links from titles that any developer maintained a claim. The site is not actively maintained anymore but still runs:

Abandonware is tricky. The term basically means that it is software that the creators/publishers don't really care about anymore, but it is not a legal term, the software still has owners, and they might not actually allow the software to be free. The whole abandonware question is a matter of law vs morals. It might not be morally wrong to download abandonware, but it is not technically speaking legal.
(For the record, my stance on abandonware is that i think that it is okay). The underdogs was always an openly illegal site, offering illegal downloads, until someone told them that they should take down a game. I don't think anyone were trying to take legal actions against the site though, as it a: would have generated a lot of badwill, and b: They always complied with companies that did not want their games up for download.

That is the old underdogs site, and it does not have any games up for download anymore. There is a more recent attempt to re-build the underdogs, going under the name hotud (I don't know what the mods would think of me if I posted a direct link to it though).

I'm running out of space in the first post. I've had to cut all of the fluff text, and I'll probably have to start post future links in other posts soon.

I could only find a "safe" site for race into space. The Ur-Quan Masters was already in the first post, though I might have put it under the wrong category.

Interesting regarding HOTU and it's upstart. I was always under the impression it willingly took down dl links after the Digital Millenium Copyright act went into effect that clarified the status of much of this stuff. And you're totally right about all the links being down now.

As to this sort of thing I'm not especially worried about it either; long dormant 15-20 year old games live on largely thru the efforts of dedicated fans, collectors and affionados doing stuff like this [for no $] - though I know it's a 'red flag' issue for some. But enough original developers have been touched by the continuing interest in their work, some even encouraging it, to summarily write the whole practice off.

re Race Into Space this link is a good hub to the project and probably the one you refer to: http://www.raceintospace.org/. I also picked up the original boxed w/ guide on eBay - quite a feast of supporting material.

Added an unexpected classic: A modified System shock 1, with mouse support and higher resolution textures, which apparently has managed to get thumbs up the team behind the original game.

@Fnord - thanks for the heads up! The original move/view interface was akward for me and kept me away from this one, so glad to see there's a mouselook mod. Tracked the SS website and picked up some other neat stuff for it..

Cool, I had been wanting to try System Shock, and had heard about this remake, but had been wondering just how faithful to the original it really was. I didn't realize it had the blessing of the System Shock design team, so I'm assuming it's pretty good then. I'll have to give it a try.

Remember to hit E to activate mouse look (at least with the settings that I installed the game). It is possible that it only got the blessing from one or two members, but from what I have heard (and I won't guarantee that it is true), they did contact some of them, and got thumbs up, and the plug has not been pulled. It is not really a remake though, it is just an upgrade of the original, based on the original CD version.

I also had issues with the interface of the original game. Far more so in System shock than in Ultima underworld, even though their controls are rather similar. I'll make sure that I get the chance to play through the game properly this time around.

It is only free to play for a week, but for a shooter, it is really nice.

*edit* Alright, it would seem like I was wrong there, the game actually is free to play. Game added to the list

Yes TF2 is a great mulitplayer shooter, if you enjoy those.

Lots of people playing it all the time, plenty of good servers with admins that do what they need to do.
