The Endless Forest - Experimental art game. Play as a deer in an (endless) forest. You can play online with other people, or use it as a screensaver if you like. The catch is... you can only communicate via body language
The Graveyard - Another experimental game from Tale of Tales, it's super short, though. You can purchase the "full" version for a small price, although there isn't much difference between the games.

Also Dynamix released their original Red Baron WWI Flying game for free years ago....and Freespace 1 and 2 were given a "share with a friend for free" license by the maker before they went under so they were both developed into much more detailed and modern games by a vast community effort, google for Hard Light Forums and they will have all the info.

Works very well, and don't be surprised if it ends up taking hours of your life anyway. Oh, and be prepared to die and restart a lot. Each randomly generated adventure may be theoretically beatable in ten minutes, but the game is hard and unforgiving.

http://www.ralpharama.co.uk/item.php?itemid=210&page=The+Little+Wizard+Game
there is another remarkably sophisticated totally free shockwave game called Alien X, it takes place aboard a space station and had a lot of adventures and a really big surprise at the end, it is quite good.

Just be sure if you install the files you don't accidentially select the optional add ons that are sales pitches.

Very fun, but a learning curve (like DOTA). Lots of heroes to pick from and for playing you get "IP" points, which you use to unlock new heroes.

Defense of the Ancients (commonly known as DotA) is a custom scenario for the real-time strategy video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, based on the "Aeon of Strife" map for StarCraft. The objective of the scenario is for each team to destroy the opponents' Ancients, heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters called "creeps". As in role-playing games, players level up their heroes and use gold to buy equipment during the mission.

All you need to know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OzWIFX8M-Y
lol, but seriously, it's a mod for Warcraft III that basically spawned it's own sub-genre.
It's not like any RTS game, you don't build anything or order units around. You only control your hero unit. All the other u nits on the map (known as creeps) are AI controlled, along with some neutral npc's that are in the "jungles" (not in the lanes, which are the paths the creeps take) where you can kill them.
You lv up your hero by getting exp, from killing enemy creeps and heroes. you lv up and you earn gold which you use to buy items to make your hero better.
It takes time to learn but it's very competitive and fun. However it's an EXTREMELY team dependent game, and thus the community it breeds is probably the WORST community in the history of gaming. People are rude, they'll blame you for their own mistakes, some will quit (thus giving the enemy team a huge advantage/win), among many other bad behaviors. Finding a good group to play with and learning the game if you can stand the long curve is very fun and rewarding though.
Since DOTA it has spawned similar games in it's own sub-genre, Demigod, Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends (main one that I play) and the upcoming DOTA 2, which is being made by Valve with one of the main DOTA guys, Icefrog.

The term MOBA (Massive Online Battle Arena) is gaining ground as the name of this genre.
Along with Valve developing Dota 2, Blizzard is making its own version for Starcraft II, imaginative called Blizzard's Dota :.

I have and did play HON, however I find LoL more fun because of small differences it changes, like taking out the denying of creeps which instead makes you focus more on harassing enemy heroes or denying them xp by keeping them at a distance (thus making lane make ups more important).
Also in LoL vs HoN the game seems more balanced in terms of team orientation. In HoN if a carry gets even remotely fed taht can easily lead to an instant win. Whereas in LoL a fed carry can still be countered in some ways, and with a better all around team you can still pull through. It just seems like it's less of an "early game win = late game win" and more of a chess match, back and fourth the ent ire game with one fight that could turn it all around, more fun to me.
Also on top of this the LoL guys put out a new hero every two weeks. HoN gets some updates but it's not that regular.
It does do things I like better then LoL though, like replays, the ability to remake a game, etc.

In Japan they have a name for the syndrome where people become unable to leave their homes, Hikkimora, and it affects up to a million people. I think WOW addiction is similar and it is a good warning that virtual realty is no substitute for real life. But I expect we will have to go further in the direction of the virtual from the cancer of social networking i see, which is trivial static presented as real communication and connectivity. The Hive Mind is a weak one and very fragile vulnerable to outside factors.
Back to the topic, i guess some online games do provide free play time, I know you could visit URU MOUL as a visitor for free and now you can play the full game for free too. So that is a good one to add to the list. Just google for Mystonline and you will find the download.

In my experience, most people lose themselves in virtual reality when they cannot deal with the actual one. Hell, it happened to me with Morrowind, although I was sensible enough not to let my grades go down... anything else didn't matter. I seriously believe new generations need some kind of education on virtual reality.
Shaiya is an OK free MMO. Lord of the Rings Online became free recently.

Yip, virtual reality is specifically created for user enjoyment, so of course it's more fun than the real world.
Anyway, good to see another ex-Morrowind junkie..- I still get nostalgia attacks when I hear that Morrowind theme song, and am stuck in it again right at the moment. Since I had to restart from scratch, this time i don't mind cheating a bit to get myself closer to a level where i had last left off.
Also, these days i am a lot more open to trying out mods which really make the place look a whole lot prettier. [smiley=cheesy.gif]

Wow, I know, right? I watched the new Skyrim trailer and there was the main theme (full orcehstra and lyrics this time) and I nearly started crying. It brought back so many memories!
I tried to start a new game several times, but never had the nerve to get far. I had a lot of mods back then, one of my favourites was Meadow Fae that let you play as a fairy :'D I loved dressing my elf in pretty fairy dresses and giving her wings. I'm such a girl sometimes
I don't know about LotRO, the download/installation made my computer slow so I never downloaded it.

I don't know about LotRO, the download/installation made my computer slow so I never downloaded it. Did it work like a torrent? I've noticed that my computer tends to slow down to a crawl when I download files using torrents, and I reach speeds over 2mbit (using the THQ patcher is a pain!)
and the community was nasty back then so i never bothered to stay with it And it is probably even worse now. Free to play games tends to attract the worst possible people.

Heh, it's exactly that Skyrim trailer that got me back to playing Mw again!
I don't mind restarting the game, I've restarted it many times before, and usually I go get myself the boots of blinding speed asap. However, this time I just typed in a cheat code to make myself run faster. That's one thing I just cannot abide about Morrowind, is the slow default walking.
I'm working on enchanting myself a constant effect garment now, that will let me fly around the place again like in the good old days...
