So I never bothered with this thread, since I'm quite happy with how the forum looks. Today I was a little bored and found out what I missed. From now on I want a PM from somebody when a thread in Off Topic goes off topic!!
I love it when these things do that. If things stayed on topic for more than 20 posts I'd think something was wrong.

Well, now that's just the thing: I am interested in chatting to gentlemen about nerdy stuff, and the older guys just don't seem interested in that. I don't chat with Fnord privately, but I remember we once had a looong and very interesting conversation that lasted a good few days, (in a thread in "other games" ) about medieval fighting styles, about language and medieval songs, somewhere else about scientific stuff, and all sorts of interesting things. (Age: 24)
I still chat privately with Thaumaturge, even though he doesn't post here anymore, and we chat about games, about game development (he programmes for a gaming dev) about fantasy fiction that we write, articles on New Scientist, books, films and the like. (Age: somewhere between 24 and 32)
For the longest time I've been chatting privately with naughty Greek Nik - who likes to set the cat amongst the pigeons here on site, but in fact can converse about literally anything you can think of. (He also has a great sense of fun). We have often discussed books, films, politics, and in particular Greek politics, philosophy, religion, gender issues, gaming, gaming, and once more gaming – at one time we both had collections going of both adventure games and RPG's, and we were swopping out info re our collections; at a stage we were both quite into trivia games; Nik is into theatre and art and architecture; has pretty good music taste IMHO, and ah, don’t forget how much we like to chat about new PC hardware and software, we like discussing new hardware when it comes out, and Nik always knows the niftiest apps around for about any use you can think of. The list just goes on and on. (Age: 2
I’ve also been chatting privately for the longest time with JKing, also pretty much about anything. We too, share a taste for both Adventure games and RPG’s, and we – ah – yes well, JKing is also very technically minded, and has, like Nik, also given me lots of advice on all sorts of tech stuff. JKing’s tastes lean more towards the internet and web development side, so he is quite a wellspring of info if you are interested in web applications and development. He also loves any new tech gadget that comes out and must always investigate these as soon as they see the light of day. (Age : 27) PS: Just DON’T get started in a discussion with JKing about Candian politics, and steer far away from subjects like Stephen Harper and monarchy. Oh - and something else that I like about JKing, is that we both seem to enjoy a very wide taste in music – from classical, to blues, to metal, to certain kinds of pop.
Older guys just don’t seem interested in chatting, and mainly just seem to fool around or talk about, - I don’t know…- not really nerdy stuff. (Sex, mostly?) (Ok, with a few exceptions – there are a few older guys on the site who are also into tech stuff- but they don’t like me, and never chat to me, so I guess they won’t be wanting to come on board my ship)
So my ship will be the “nerd” ship. Men and women of all ages, who have nerdy, geeky, artistic and intellectual inclinations are quite welcome on my ship. That includes Karla and Chris Gerlach, even tho I had not mentioned them above – for their artistic vibes, and because they have kinda 'techie" inclinations of their own, regarding things that interest them, so I think they’d generally “fit in” quite well. 8-)
Warning to those who do not like tech discussions: “You might end up being bored on this ship…”
Certainly we can meet up with your ship and throw huge parties Caroline! Geeks need to have fun too, after all..

And we'll meet up a few times for a girls' lunch.

I must say that I have enjoyed many more conversations there with strangers, than I have anywhere else in the game. Maybe it's that people are more willing to chat, maybe it's a shared age group, who knows? Other than my younger friends from JA, I've met very few < 30 types that are interesitng or interested enough to chat to me.

Our ship should be technologically far ahead of Caroline's - in fact, I'm sure it will be able to do space travel - so we can go and do shopping in some outer galaxy while Caroline's flunkys are sweating it out at the oars... [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]
Btw, how I actually met JKing was because we kept bumping into one another on tech forums, and then went when we discovered we had a mutual interest in writing. We used to write long tomes to one another, though we've grown rather lazy lately.
Anyway, regarding any serious fantasy/SF writing, there are so many wannabes entering the market, that one feels too intimidated to really give it a serious try, I think.
Heh, Traveller, I see you know JKing rather well. Ever said anything bad about Her Majesty the Queen in front of him? : [smiley=angel.gif]

Sounds like a wonderful ship, though, Traveller, and I'll happily come along, though I hope you wouldn't expect to see me much since I'd be kept busy by a certain someone.

er.. Shez, well - I don't chat that much with J, (and he always mentions you in the most superlative affectionate terms when we do, :-* ) ...but ...actually - I did once put my foot in it with Her Majesty. In fact, I was severely reprimanded by some mention I had made on JA about Queen Victoria, if I'm not mistaken... [smiley=indie.gif]
(Heck, I was in trouble just for calling her "Queen Vic" - let alone the other things I had [s]said[/s]wondered about... :-X )

Wonder what JKing's opinion of Queen Camilla will be?

Indeed, you'll find less opposition to monarchy in Canada than you will in Australia, I dare say. It's never been a contentious political issue, really, though there are of course some republicans.
I suppose it is a little strange for a French Canadian with an anti-English ethnic Irish father to be such a rabid monarchist, but the world is a strange place, after all.

I like the idea that we have a Queen, but really, I don't pay much attention to current politics/govenrment, etc.
