I use a Nvidia 9600 GT
If you install the aformentioned older driver, your system will prompt you several times if you're really sure. Don't worry about it. There should be no problem whatsoever, but it never hurts to manually make a recoverypoint first.
The old driver will perform just as good as the new ones, since the newer ones only adressed some issues with high tech 3D shooters and RPG's (Crysis, Farcry2 and WoW expansion packs). The newer driver speeds up these games.
On another note, I find it rather lame that gamestudios leave it to the consumer to sort out these problems, while they actually should take firm action themselves.

Status : Offline | I play action games once in a while and recently bought a special edition Quake 4 DVD that included Quake 2, two Q2 add-on packs and Quake 4. I found out that recent Nvidia drivers for my GeForce 9500 cards removed support for older OpenGL based games like Q2. Nvidia may have fixed the support problem for older OpenGL games with this latest driver release or they may fix it in the future but for now I'm glad I have an older Dell with a GeForce 3 Ti 200 and an HP desktop with an integrated Intel graphics chip! It's almost time to break out my Win98SE Pentium 200Mhz PCs and make sure the DOS drivers are properly set up!

Status : Offline | It took me two days to solve the problem. Downloading the newest driver (release 2nd of March 2010) will NOT solve the problem. Downloading a (very) old driver will.
Although the 9600 is supported by the latest drivers I doubt there are any enhancements for it. Sometimes older is better.

Status : Offline | There are many posts showing up on search sites like Google and Metacrawler saying that some Nvidia users who have installed the latest drivers notice that the fan control may not work properly with the new drivers. This could lead to poor performance or an unstable system if the fan is spinning at moderate speed when it needs to be at high speed for a demanding game or program. I have not yet been able to figure out if this may affect all Nvida cards or only certain brands with extra software installed but I will not be installing the new drivers until I'm sure they are safe to use with my cards.
