Temperatures fell to 21 degrees across northern Italy early Tuesday and plummeted to a record 3 degrees in alpine areas, whipped by winds of up to 75 mph.
Strange reporting- very sloppy.  Are the temperatures quoted Centigrade (Celsius), Fahrenheit, Absolute, Réaumur, Rankine, Kelvin (Absolute) or what?
I can only guess, Fahrenheit - in which case 3°F [ch8776] -16°C
In  Norrköping Sweden, normally cold in winter, it has been around an extremely frigid -28°C -30°C / on and off for some time.
However, where I live it is a pleasant  +20°C

The UK has also had a long spell of unusually cold weather which seems to be continuing.

So much for global WARMING.

Anyway, I don't know much of the supposed science of global warming, but I don't think global warming means that everywhere in the world will get hotter - at least not right away. I think it refers to the melting of glacial caps etc? Which can cause disastrous effects for the whole world? I'm not sure, but that's the impression I got.

I'm not sure if I buy into the 'global warming is a conspiracy' theory, as it seems a bit odd to me that so many governments would be taking it so seriously and throwing money at the issue without just cause. And - though I haven't sought any out - the only slap-downs I've heard in regard to the theory have been quite preposterous and illogical.

Deleted Userwith dozens dead and dying in Europe from the devastating cold and hundreds of thousands made homeless (at lest temporarily) isn't it childish to make a petty rave attack?

I suggest completely stopping the unpleasant hi-jack discussion  --- it only produces mutual villifications and antagonisms - and achieves nothing positive whatsoever.

That's enough from me - and I hope from others.

Arkadia was simply trying to respond to your original post about global warming.  She wasn't attacking anyone.

In the case of global warning, the golfstream will probably be weakened or diverted (says some scientists), which in turn means that Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the UK and other countries in this region will grow colder at first, before the temperature will rise.

Whether or not global warming or climate change has any basis in fact (I'll let people far brighter than I figure that one out), there's no arguing with wanting better air quality, or with wishing to reduce our reliance on oil or other non-renewable resources which will, some day, be depleted.  It's a shame that what I consider the larger issue gets lost in petty squabbles over whether global warming is real because we've had some cold temperatures of late.  :-/

I'd like to publicly apologize for my behavior.  I was out of line and I'm very sorry.  I just lost my temper.  It won't happen again.

Deleted UserAt very first glance I just saw you’re your post (now deleted) as unacceptable without realizing who you were.  Within seconds however, I DID identify you MissB and was quite shocked – in the literal sense of the word  - like getting an electric shock.

I certainly understand and sympathize that you have been under very great strain recently – and probably for quite a time previously.
But don’t allow yourself to be swept along by the demagoguery of some people who harbour dislikes and grudges for various reasons and agendas. Do not allow yourself to be manipulated and side with whoever just in order to curry favour.  Too many people are like sheep and follow the majority flock  - wherever it goes - even in very dirty muddy waters.

Speaking as one of a much older generation, for better or for worse, you are so very young and have a good and productive life ahead of you, even if you are despondent now.

Almost all human beings get angry at times and on occasions and for different reasons – and it’s nothing to be ashamed of IMHO.
Please try not to take the anger out on wrong and deviously distorted causes - but on genuine unbiased ones.
Be your own conscience and mistress and don’t get swept away by anybody else's influence, but your own moral compass.

It was very decent of you to apologize to everybody on the Forum, and quite brave.

Good for you.
Just my personal 2 cents - I hope you take them in the positive and supportive  manner in which they are intended..    [smiley=thumbsup.gif]     [smiley=angel.gif]

Thank you, yogibear, for accepting my apology and for being so kind.

You're right...I'm feeling angry at the moment, but I had no right to take it out on you or anyone else.

I've also apologized via PM to the mods.  I was wrong.

Deleted UserThat is REALLY courageous of you and I admire you for it.
I have made very many more mistakes than you in my life an whenever I know it (which is frequent) I try to face them, correct them, and apologize.
IMHO, there is no shame in that.
I was a teacher for very many years and from time to time made mistakes certainly factual ones and sometimes personal ones. It happened quite a few times that a pupil or student would pull me up over one of my errors.  If it was justified, and not infrequently it was, I would not try to hide it but 'own up', and if necessary apologize - same with my love of computer games.

Enough of this - no more apologies on EITHER side.
The confrontation NEVER OCCURED.

I sincerely hope that with time you'll snap out of your depression – I DO know what it’s like and it can be overcome – sometimes only with great difficulties but it CAN be routed, and permanently.  I hope that some time in the not too distant future you will have a happy family - I see no reason why not.
I seem to understand that you would like a child or children some time when suitable, and I greatly hope you will and be able to give them all the deep love and affection that your mother heaped upon you.    [smiley=blush.gif]      [smiley=kiss.gif]

What you are witnessing in the yellow press is the politicizing of the normal global temperatures due to many factors.  NO science has proven global warming, only a consensus of opinion has made the news.

So, ignore Al Gore and the small countries looking for funds.

Still, we have a big problem with pollution and general disregard for our waste.  If you need a cause, latch on to greener initiatives of your local communities and be informed.  It was long thought that disposable diapers would kill the planet.  The lesson is that extremists have big hearts and big blind spots.

One of the outrageous proposals at Copenhagen was that Papua New Guinea offered to preserve a certain percentage of forest in exchange for large amounts of cash.    It transpired that the areas they were offering to preserve were steeply wooded and inaccessible and totally unlikely ever to have been logged.

No doubt there is some climate change BUT it is by no means certain that a) it is as urgent and catastrophic as predicted, b) that it is man-made, c) that man has any chance of altering it.

If by chance, it is a natural cycle for our planet, then we stand buckley's chance in hell of altering it.  The planet has its own time-table which we don't have enough data to correctly interpret.

I think more research is needed, less scientific ego, a lot less money-grabbing by big industries and small countries and some real efforts to cut pollution and stop the extinction of numerous species.

We should also investigate alternative renewable fuel sources, better farming methods and a less wasteful lifestyle.

This planet has a history of climate change and shorelines shrinking and changing.  But all the dirty linen is coming out now about how the figures were fudged by the scientists to pressure the politicians.  We can't make sound policy judgements on falsehoods.

Deleted UserEarlier in this thread it was maintained that elderly folk are incapable of judging certain inter-relationships due to "not being with it" on account of age.
I am certainly NOT going to rake this subject up on any personal basis whatsoever - but I DO think that it is a contention worth examining.

Of course as with so many subjects, one is liable to present generalities.  But there are always exceptions to every rule., and what I say is only an opinion for what it's worth and probably a generalization not applicable to everybody.

Whilst not attempting to improve the Bard’s “7 Ages of Man”, I think that there are at least 3 adult ages – or stages.
When one is young, one tends to see all things in black and white.  When Middle Aged all controversial subjects seem grey with 2 or more sides to every question..  When old, one can hardly know what are the questions, let alone the answers.

But seriously – with regard to the contention that old people are incapable of judging today’s issues due to their age.
There certainly MAY be some truth in this – - at least for many pensioners.
But the first world is charging along and changing at breakneck speed exponentially and “young” is no longer people in their 20’s and 30’s but in their very early teens – if not even younger.

Many (maybe even most) members of this Forum are in their early 50’s.  Many have children – and some even grandchildren (one or more odd-balls may have great-grandchildren).
Those even born around the late 1950’s grew up with no or hardly any TV’s, certainly no computers, whose parents were lucky to own a home telephone let alone cell phones, bipods and the like.  Internet, Face Book, Twitter, Goggle, etc. were unheard of. Not every family even owned a single car, to say nothing of one for every 16+ year old child.  The pill (and Viagra) had not been invented – and this had a profound influence on sexual mores. And so on and so on.

So those middle aged folk here who have children are already miles ‘behind’ their offspring – assuming they have any.

In short – I believe that every generation recently tends to regard their elders (if not necessarily betters) are really “Old Fogeys”.
We may feel very young – even if we aren’t – although many folk say that age should not be measured in years – or aches and pains and illnesses – but in spirit and attitudes.

OK – let the Tsunami, tidal wave of disagreement and/or refutation, begi

     n. All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything
.

Deleted UserWith regards to the serious discussions as to whether “Global Warming” has caused abnormal severe cold spells in many parts of the world –

For people with a scientific background this supposition is not unreasonable.
The physical laws of Conservation of Energy, the second Law of Thermodynamics, etc. would seem to give some credence to this possibility.

On the other hand, at least one eminent scientist has claimed that there is no connection, and cold cycles like this occur roughly once in every 30 years or so.

I have next to no proper knowledge on the subject – so I Googled “Is Global Warming responsible for the present cold weather?”.
I received many conflicting theories and claims   :exclamation    [smiley=rolleyes.gif]
