Whatever happened to the series? I heard it had essentially been put on hold so a Red Dwarf movie could be produced, but I never heard anything about it after that.

Status : Online | I LOVE RED DWARF!!!!
I recorded the whole series when they appeared on British TV and have enjoyed many a night with friends spent constantly in stitches, watching whole series at a time, up to the point where my videotapes are f****d and not watchable any more! Thank god for Sky and the constant reruns they seem to show on UK Gold!
Has anyone read the books? - I can thoroughly recommend them - well written and full of Red Dwarf humour
I long for another series, but , alas I think it has gone to Sitcom heaven!

Red Dwarf is excellent. I sometimes get the impression that people dismiss it because it's a sci-fi show, which is irritating because the writing is very clever.

And I second the recommendation of the books. Well, the first two books anyway - I didn't think the last two (seperately written) were as good. The first two are superb, though.

Resistance is not futile, we're gonna win this thing, humankind is too good, we're not a bunch of under-achievers! We're gonna stand up, and we're gonna be human beings. We're going to get fired up about the real things, the things that matter! Creativity, and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit.

| Deleted User | Yes, as already mentioned there is a Red Dwarf movie in production, and it will probably move into the filming phase very soon. It will be released worldwide, so hopefully it's going to get the series more attention. I've heard that the story isn't going to continue after the cliffhanger in series 8, but be an independent one. We'll have to wait until series 9 (which may or may not be done, but I bet it will) before we get to see what happens...
Apparently Red Dwarf is the most successful comedy series ever for BBC (with the possible exception of Monthy Python) so it's not unlikely that they'll continue it. In the meantime, the actors are involved in a lot of other interesting project. For instance, you may have seen Craig Chales (Lister) in Robot Wars, Robert Llewelyn (Kryten) in Scrapheap Challenge and Chris Barrie in the Lara Croft movies (of which the second is currently in post-production).
The DVD's are full of interesting extra material, very interesting for a Red Dwarf fan. There are also audio commentaries of every episode.
The thing about it being sci-fi is interesting. It had a very hard time getting made in the first time because it was sci-fi. Not making sci-fi comedies seem to be an unspoken rule in the industry. How wrong that was... Red Dwarf has really been ahead of its time on multiple occations. For instance, the hologram concept and the character of Kryten was years before Star Trek used similar ideas. And in many ways, the sci-fi is placed in the background. Red Dwarf is first and foremost comedy. I really don't understand why it hasn't become "mainstream" like some other comedies. Maybe it takes a special sense of humor to appreciate it the way it's intended to. :
If you haven't got them already, you really should get hold of the Smeg Ups and Smeg Outs videos, full of outtakes from the show. They're hilarious!

| Deleted User | I loved the first few series' of Red Dwarf - seen them thousands of times. My fave episode is Backwards - just fantastic!
It really lost it in the last two series' though... just not funny enough whatsoever. Seriously, though, I honestly hope they don't screw up the film - the last series' timimg was totally off, Listers' girlfriend (shame on me for forgetting the characters name - haven't seen it in 3 or 4 years) was unbelievably bad and the jokes really thin on the ground and more and more mainstream.
I grew up with this series, watched it religiously, and I just KNOW if they made another load, they just won't be as good. There's just something about the Starbug flying around on strings that gave it all some extra charm...

| Deleted User | I know... Series 7 and 8 just didn't reach the levels of some of the earlier series. Still very funny, but not as insanely funny as series 4, 5 and 6. The first two series are not the most funny ones either, especially the first one. But they hand't really found the correct formula yet back then. As for the later series, I think one of the original writers (Doug/Naylor) left. Or was it the director? Anyway, someone important left the series.
BTW: I think almost everyone's favorite show is "Backwards". Certainly one of the most memorable anyway...
For me, a measure of a really, really funny comedy show is when I can't help laughing out loud even if I'm watching it alone. The Simpsons and Seinfeld does this in their brightest moments. Red Dwarf does it a lot.
Red Dwarf is also the favorite show of many famous people, including Madonna and Stephen Hawking.
Has anyone seen the American pilot episode? I haven't managed to get hold of it.
