Hi, I joined this forum because I'm having trouble running Scratches on Windows 7 and the only helpful information I've gotten from anywhere was on another thread here:

Augustin, this thread spurred me to give Scratches another try, but I get naught but a blue-screen crash in Windows 7, a problem which it appears you're aware of.  Any idea if this can/will be fixes, or am I and others simply out of luck?

In fact, today is your lucky day! Just edit the SCREAM.CFG file with Notepad or any text editor and change RATE to 60. Then save and enjoy the game. I've already shared this quick fix with many others.

Apparently, Microsoft made a change in the way you must detect the refresh rate and the old method in Scratches didn't work anymore. It's beyond all reason why it causes a blue screen but, then again, we're talking about Windows here.

I did what was suggested and now the game will start up but it goes to a black screen and will stay there until I press esc, when it then plays some creepy music. At the end of the music it stays on a black screen until I press esc again and it will go to the menu screen. The mouse moves slowly across the menu in jumps and when I go to start a game the audio plays normally but the video moves annoyingly slow, frame by frame.

Does anybody have any ideas how I can get this game to run properly? So far the iwin customer service is not being very helpful and I really just want to play this game.

It could be a number of things because the CFG fix is really guaranteed to work. Which video card model you have? Make 100% sure its drivers are updated.

Oh my god, thank you! Apparently I needed some fancy windows 7 driver that for some reason the device manager didn't know about so I had to actively find and install it myself.

I am having the same problem, except I have the original Scratches, not the Director's Cut. I did try the scream.cfg trick, but it won't even boot up at all when I try. Any ideas? I'm running Windows 7, too.

Did you apply the hyperthreading patch before you started the game?  It could be a totally unrelated issue to the .cfg settings.

What?

Nucleosys is no longer up and running, but I seem to recall Agustin mentioning another potential setting in the configuration file that could cause errors (it was a sound setting).

Make a good backup of the original, and see if you can find it (I don't have the game installed at the moment).

Actually - just post your configuration file, that way we can take a look at it.

You did run the patch - right?

What?

to Rory:
I encounter the same problem, which the cutscene play music but no picture at all, which can be forwarded by pressing the esc key.  May you please enlighten me as to which drivers you are referring at...

Many thanks for your answers...

I was encountering the same problem with the cutscenes (black with music/sound). I was about to post my problem here till I tried one last solution that apparently worked.

I reinstalled the game and installed the patch BEFORE I started up the game (previously, I had installed the patch after starting the game as I was unaware of it at the time).

Hope this helps.
