I've done that, but no matter what I do, I draw my sword. lol  I'm at work now and best get to it.

Ok, press TAB, then click on your spells, until you see the "heal" spell.  Then hold down the 1 key, and a little circle with slots one to 8 should appear on the right of the screen.
While all the while keeping 1  (one) depressed with your finger on your keyboard, click on the "heal" spell. The little heart icon should now appear in slot one.

Assuming you have a flame or fireball spell, keep your key for #2 (the number keys above the letters on your keyboard) depressed, and the little circle should appear again, click on the fire spell and the flame icon should appear in slot 2.
Rinse and repeat for other spells, or possibly potions out of your inventory.

Now, when you return to your normal screen, press numbers keys 1-8, to see them cycle in that little "spell" slot at the bottom of your screen.

Careful, if you press the number corresponding to a potion or food or drink, you will automatically consume it.

Oh, hang on! Maybe you don't realize that you still have to press C to cast that spell? Pressing the hotkey number will only make it your "current spell, it won't automatically cast the spell, and you need to press C to activate it, not click your LMB. LMB will always activate your weapon.

However, if you had assigned a potion to a hotkey (say, #5) then pressing 5 will indeed make you atomatically consume that potion.

Chris! Please help. Are there not any "better heads" mods for Oblivion? These people are looking uglier than my people currently look in Morrowind with the excellent better heads mod I'm using there . (Vvardenfell visages)

yes WONDERFUL better heads,  give me time to find them

working on it
this is exciting, lots of good Oblvion posting, good replies all of them Traveller, btw, thanks for helping with all of that, I also have a mod that improves the GUI inventory screen and makes things much easeir to read and use.It is called BTMod by Tikigod and Beider and you get a much better inventory screen and map function and a whole lot more: read here about it: http://btmod.beider.org/

get it here:

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=25

and i use a colour map which is a nice addition:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1951

or get both in a User Interfact (UI) Pack here:
http://www.filefront.com/14955215/OB-UI.zip/

and a modified HUD for dialog so when you talk to someone their face is not HUGE and overwhelming:  more cinematic:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9792

the place to get mods is :

http://www.tesnexus.com/

for heads and bodies: there has been an evolution, we used to have :

Ren's Beauty Pack  (Mystic Elf race)
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4431
Natural Faces
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1965
Beautiful People (combines many face and race improvments, but old)
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5175
Roberts_Male_Body
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=3379

and several improved races:

Elves of Lineage II
Corean Race

now we have some wonderful new imiprovments on bodies and faces:

now we have Eshme's Body mod
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5051

and

Exnem's EyeCandy Body Replacer 1.0 (which I use)
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10171

and more

here is a good overview of the choices:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes4Mod:Body_Mods

and we have some further advancements on face that really make them wonderful:

I reccomend the following:

F-INevOblvion_1_0-19021
Improved high res body textures for EC and HGEC Body
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19021

eyesNharis4originalrace-1897  Saram
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19387

IFT_Improved Facial Textures
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1507

Underlying Facial Textures by Enayla, goes in AFTER IFT
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9534

Babe Hair
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11210

and using either 0b_am_EshmesBodiesV3
or Female_EyeCandyBodyReplacer as the base for female and Robert_Male_full_body for male bodies.

and this will improve faces of NPCs :

Beautiful Women Faces
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17189

i put these into an easy one stop shopping package for the holidays for you:

OBLVION BODY MOD PACKhttp://www.filefront.com/14955155/OB-Body-Mods-Pack.zip/

To instlall mods, remember, BACK UP DATA FOLDER FIRST!!!!!!!!!!

then just pop each category of content, ie Mesh texture, into the Data folder and into the correct sub folder, and be sure to put the ESM if there is one into the data folder itself ...and activate it with the Oblvion Launcher in the Data Files section.

then either place the folders contents of the mod into the correct folder of the game, ie: Bethesda/Oblivion/Data/Meshes,   or Textures or wherever things need to go...or

use OMOD, Oblivion Mod Manager by TimeSlip
http://timeslip.chorrol.com/obmm_download.html

either way, you will need to go into the Oblivon Launcher up screen, select Data Files and check the check box for the files you just installed..just look for their name on the list. Once they are activated that resource will be present in the game and will work for any saves you have, if you delete a resource it will not appear for any saves.  PM or post with any questions about this. The faces and bodies of all races are vastly improved. The community has moved lightyears ahead of the vanilla.

If you mod up correctly you will get this....

instead of the potato head people
8-)

but remember, SAVE DATA file before changes !!! and ask for any help pls. or visit Elder Scrolls forum there are tons of happy helpers there

I have been happily playing my install of Oblvion now for 3 years... it really is a remarkable world

I thought of some more fun mods that may make things more plesant and better, including several that address some of the things you have posted about Traveller: enjoy the grab bag of goodies...some of these address issues that you have posted about here and other threads....

Expanded Hotkeys and Spell Delete:
This mod gives you 28 available hotkeys and an easy spell delete function (shift-delete). A good mod for the avid spellcaster since more than 8 spells are often required and accessing the "spell book" can get quite annoying after a while. Also included is a auto item-equip function which can make life a lot easier at times. Remember to follow the install instructions to the letter. There is no conflict between this mod and BTMod v.2.2

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1621

Menu Escape: This mod allows you to use the mouse and/or spacebar to quickly escape out of menus and conversations and more.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10812

No More Magic Leveling up

Francesco's leveled creatures items mod multilanguage ("Francesco's mod"
:
Tired that nearly all creatures level up with you? Bored that at level 25 all bandits of the world are god-like ones with daedric equipment? Then this mod is for you. This mod has similar effects as the OOO mod (the OOO mod has a bunch of other game balance changes also), however since it's designed by another individual, the changes are not quite the same. It is advised to check out the list of changes for both mods before deciding upon either one.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2518

No Borders:
To open up the over half the game world you cant travel to normally this fix to the ini will let you over the borders:  To enable a borderless Cyrodiil, "mod" the game yourself. Search for the file oblivion.ini, usally in My Documents/My Games/Oblivion/oblivion.ini. Change the line bBorderRegionsEnabled=1 to bBorderRegionsEnabled=0.

No Psychic Guards:
Makes Guards act normally, they do NOT know ALL you are doing wherever you are ...and a guard wont appear magically in the middle of the wilderness to arrest you:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11911

Horse Commands:
Tell your horse to come, stay, to sing (not) or whatever: Horse Commands 2.3 by kuertee (37 KB): whistle commands to your horse to make it come and follow or stay.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8766

Ride a Dragon!
Saiden Storm's Akatosh Mounts (15654kb): With this mod, you can choose a dragon mount, based on the Akatosh statue in the Imperial City after the main quest, and take to the sky. Who doesn't like flying on dragons?

http://www.pixelrage.org/download/Akatosh-Mount-By-Saiden-Storm--Release-1.9-rerepackaged-2691.html

Mountain Tower
Special Wizards Lair with lots of cool stuff:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3384

Griffon Fortress   Mr Silka

Updated and fixed bugs

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14830

Original

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24805

Install the original first but delete the ESM and add the new one from the Updated and fixed version, there were sone bugs but this is by and far one of the most spectacular and wonderful and complete castles i have seen for any game or genre of games.

THE BEST of QUESTS
and if and when you want some NEW adventures: here are three of the best New Quests that have been done:

The Lost Spires

One of the most detailed and professional Quest mods out yet, it has a very large and deep story based on Archaeology and discovery, this mod won the maker a job with a major game company and remains one of the greatest mod works of art and artisty for Oblivon.
http://www.lostspires.com/

The Underdark Saga

a Huge mod project that has created an entire underworld Realm, and has some very fine Quest mods made for it already, including one that gives you a remarkable Drow Companion with her own deep back story and unique character.

Part I
Viconia DeVir - Banished
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15200

Part II

The Vampire Hunter

Part III
Viconia DeVir - Return to the Underdark
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15200

The Underdark Realm

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23153

Ruined-Tail's Tale:

This Argonian Battlemage companion mod is unlike most other companion mods out to date. Ruined-Tail is an on the run, former Shadowscale in search of a companion with which to adventure around Cyrodiil making a name for himself. He takes you on an engaging questline with an extremely deep story behind it. The story will change according to how the player responds to Ruined-Tail and his tale. He will also take part however the player chooses to spend his/her time in Cyrodiil. This highly original companion mod adds depth to a beautiful world that the mod author thought was lacking. He can be found in the Arena District of the Imperial City next to the statue.
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3027

I am researching some mods that enhance the environment, improved water, night skies, stars,  enhancement of long distance view:

I've filed away all the mods.  I am excited about using them at my leisure over the new few years...

I tried the command module as a test to change my hair color.  It didn't work.  I guess I don't know the proper command line.  I tried all variations of hairtint and red, with "" and () and <> and :

~ then type     "hairtint " without the quotes, or

square brackets

one useful console command is   tfc

if you bring down the console with ~ and type tfc you will get a free camera which is nice for getting screenshots, and remember if you hold the R key, your main character will hold in place so you can check your face and see if you have any food stains or leaves in your beard  or hair.

Another useful console command is "resurrect"  i use it because unfortunately when you have a horse and you run into a monster or a minotaur or something nasty, they will inevitably attack your poor horse first, if it is in reach. The poor things will fight back but sometime it is just too much or sometimes you may be throwing a firebolt and hit your horse by mistake. The ~ and then click on the dead horse or whatever you want to resurrect, and then type resurrect and it will come back to life. I do that for wildlife that gets killed by bandidts too, sometimes, and they pop up and run off happily.

For cripe's sake!!! I'm really getting tired of JA flagging me as a spammer!  It gives me this message:

An Error Has Occurred!
Error: One of form fields contains text which is considered SPAM, you are warned! You are only allowed -7 more attempt(s) after which you will be banned as spammer!

It started off with saying it will ban me after 2 more attempts...  this has by now deteriorated to  -7 attempts.....     [smiley=furious.gif]

All I tried to post was the following:

Making gold

The Mages Guild. Perhaps the easiest way to make gold in the whole game. Nowhere, not even in the deadlands or the shivering isles can possibly get you easier gold. Walk up to any alchemy counter while the alchemist is there. (This only works if you are a guild mage). Then take everything out of the counter and on it. This wont get you a bounty and you can keep whatever you like. Then $ell it all back to the alchemist.

How come other people can use the word $ 3ll  but I cannot!  Urgh! It's discrminating against me!!!!!

Sorry you had so much trouble, Traveller. I do believe your problem is fixed now. Please let me know if it happens again.

The only thing I didn't try was brackets!! lol  Thanks.  Yeah, resurrect is a command that I'm sure I'll enjoy using a lot.  Much appreciated.  All great stuff!  A candy store!

Looks like Traveller can use "sell" and all the other four-letter words she's been dying to throw around

This game is a way of life...  one could play it forever if you had the time and the patience.

At least I'd finished the Main Quest, which IMO was more of a puzzle/maze adventure in some parts.  Not saying there were not also parts that had quite a bit of story to it, but my memory's gone hazy.
on't have that much time for gaming anymore.

So, Traveller, done any selling lately?  Sold anything?   :

Heh, - you are not going to trick me into using those words again...

Yes, I'd spent months on Oblivion, and though I'd done most things including the MQ and the 2 expansions, I still had not become a vampire, and I still did not reach quite the top of the Thieve's guild, and had not done all of the (though some) Daedric quests yet.  But as soon as my other games would let me, I plan on overcoming this stain on my gaming record....

Sorry to hear of your lack of time, Mystibob - sounds like you also need the Time Stop spell.

Yes, H, we request a Screenie or 2 of you in your journeys,

Traveller, ys, i am trying, that was why i gave him those tips about the screenshtot taking ....

and once you do those, there are some really amazing new Lands that have been created plus some super Quests, some of the quite large, the Lost Spires can take a long time and the Underdark Saga is growing as we speak. Plus if you have not seen the Monastary of Ercu yet, or the Griffon Fortress, they are two of the most wonderful player homes yet created....and there is a team doing a complete conversion to the Lord of the Rings, the map alone for that took a year to make by a dedicatged and very gifted designer who has litterally recreated the Entire world of Tolkein, much better in detail than the movies or any game yet done.

I'll put up a couple of screenies tonight.  Wish I took more care to craft my character's look.  Then again, I only rarely have to look at him

Don't worry about how bad he might look to you, Halcyon.  When I loaded the game up yesterday to refresh my memory as to the mechanics of the game, I actually had a fright when I saw how ugly my blue blue dark elf looked with her huge red eyes...

Once I've posted the Dragon Age screenies I promised, I'll post some shots of her, and you can have a good little giggle.

Okay, here's my first stumbling block:

Here’s the problem.  In Bravil, the option of Recommendation doesn’t come up.  Instead, Kud-Ei wants me to help her drag her friend out of Dreamworld.  Fine.  But while standing over his bed, or after I sleep, she will not give me the amulet to continue the quest. She keeps repeating the same comment each time I click her, and it is of no help.

BUT, my quest log says she has given me the amulet.  BUT it is not in my inventory, nor will its effect work.  I went to an earlier Save to start over, but the same thing happened.  Maybe I need the patch (I haven’t installed one yet)?

Any ideas?  I’m happy to move on, since I still have other recommendations to get, but sooner or later I have to come back, and the only way I can get a Bravil recommendation is to get past this first side-quest so I can ask for the recommendation quest.

I have scoured the web and can't find a similar problem, so I'm hoping I overlooked something.

Deleted UserHmm. This was actually a rather difficult quest once I got into the dreamworld, as far as I remember.  So listen, have you gone to lie down on the indicated bed yet?  Have a peep where your quest marker is sitting.

EDIT: I felt a bit surprised that this was one of the recommendation jobs, so I looked it up, and turns out that it isn't actually.   This is just an optional quest.

The Bravil Mage's Guild recommendationid another quest: Kud-Ei  wants you to go talk with Varon Vamori concerning the theft of Ardaline's Mage's Staff. In order to get the quest, make sure you talk to Kud-Ei about: Ardaline, Varon Vamori, and Mage's Staff. She'll give you a Beguile scroll (providing a Charm effect) in case Varon is not cooperative, and then you need to follow your quest marker to find him.

There.  I hope that partly solved your problem regarding the recommendation. In the meantime, that gives us time to investigate the other problem with the dream quest.

it may be the FormID bug where things disappera from inventory after you save. Either way see below....

ok, that can be confusing. Actually that particular quest is NOT part of the Bravil Recomendaion: see here from the wiki about that quest:

This quest is NOT part of the Bravil Recommendation: although both this quest and the Bravil Mage's Guild recommendation quest come from Kud-Ei, they are to be considered separate. This can at times be confusing, as it is possible to accept both quests simultaneously. In doing so, Kud-Ei will automatically head to Henantier's house and stand by his bedside, while you are free to do either quest. This is not recommended though, often resulting in errors making finishing one of the quests impossible (Kud-Ei may not acknowledge your finishing of a part of one of the quests after you progressed a phase in the other). Preferably finish the recommendation quest before attempting this one, or finish this one before starting the other.

Here is the start of the actual Bravil Recomendation quest:

Bravil Mages Guild
Speak with Kud-Ei in the Bravil Mages Guild about her recommendation for you. She wants you to go talk with Varon Vamori concerning the theft of Ardaline's Mage's Staff. In order to get the quest, make sure you talk to Kud-Ei about: Ardaline, Varon Vamori, and Mage's Staff. She'll give you a Beguile scroll (providing a Charm effect) in case Varon is not cooperative.

if you need more detailed help here is the info on the Recomendation quest in full:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Bravil_Recommendation

and the Through a Nightmare Darkly Quest you were trying to start:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Through_A_Nightmare,_Darkly

I suspect you may have already accepted the Recomendation Quest and be 'on" that one hence the item not appearing, but not sure.

I would recomend you install the official patch

it is :

Version 1.2.0416   FormID Patch 4/30/07

OBLIVION PATCH v1.2.0416
Oblivion_v1.2.0416English.exe(5.1 MB) 04/30/2007
This patch is for North American (English) versions.

http://static.bethsoft.com/Oblivion/Oblivion_v1.2.0416English.exe

If you have another version of the game other than the North American English, go here for patches:

http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

You can get details on patches official and unoffiical and some common bugs that have apeared in the past here:

Cris--right, I know it is not part of the recommendation quest, but according to others, you can get this one first, as I did. She has not mentioned the Recommendation quest, nor was it listed in conversation with her or anyone. Thanks for the stuff.

Trav--Yes, I've slept away a day or two on the bed and the pointer points to her. According to walkthroughs (which I have not been following, BTW), she's supposed to give me the amulet in conversation.

I'll figure it out. I was just hoping you guys might be able to tell me if this is a bug, glitch, or me.

did you scroll down to get all the conversatioin options? maybe it is hiding down there below?  mm, i remember that quest being tricky. I will research some more. I would recomend going back in time in a save and doing the recomendation quest first if you can get it....  and then the dream one as some of the posts i found about this indicate that there can be errors if both are active at once.

Deleted UserHalcyon, that (dream quest) is really a tricky quest, you know. I would personally recommend that you rather do the recommendation quest first, triggered as follows: Talk to Kud-Ei about: Ardaline, Varon Vamori, and Mage's Staff.

Like Cris said, once you have completed that quest, which is certainly the easier of the two, you can then rather come back and trigger the dream one.

The best course of action would be to restore a save from before the Dream quest was triggered, and rather trigger the other one with the abovementioned dialogue options.

Another thing: with dialogues, make sure you scroll right to the bottom; I've often been caught out thinking i'd exhausted all the dialogue, when some lines would still be lurking down there t the bottom, and needed to be scrolled to.

Yup, I did go back and save, as I said.
idn't work. No character had a recommendation choice. And I know about scrolling down.  I've researched this and it happens sometimes that you're asked to do the side quest before you're asked to do the recommendation quest.

I'll see if I can solve it when I get home.  I really don't want to wrap you guys up in the details of my gameplay.  I'm very grateful for your input, tho.
