Glad to hear that you're going to play properly first before cheating.  When I have to start a new game with Morrowind or Ob because I lost gamesaves, I do usually temporarily cheat in the sense that I up my character's speed via the console so my character can move faster, just until I reach the place where I was in the game before i lost my gamesaves, and I might even temporarily use god mode like I did in my recent Mwind game where I was basically just quickly repeating an entire questline that I had just completed anyway.
(Sadly one then has the temptation to leave the cheat on, and that really alters the game experience for you - it very soon cheapens it.)

...so to me, doing things like that before you've played through the game at least once is spoiling the original expereince for yourself.  In fact, I almost prefer games that don't give you any options (and therefore the temptation to) cheat, like The Witcher or Risen.

I think the early Gothic games didn't even give you the option to play on different difficulty settings.  Aaah, that's when you learn that your character can actually run pretty fast if he needs to!

Hi guys, I'm re-installing my Ob, and was wondering what the "spell tomes" DLC is supposed to do?

Spell tomes are placed randomly in the game and can be used to get wonderful new powers.  Minor, but really cool.

I thought certain spells were added to your spellbook when you read those random tomes :-?

Ok, spells, powers, whatever, so at least now I know it's one of those "random object" things.  It's not an actual quest or something I can go and specifically look for.

Thanks.

.

Speaking of Oblivion, I am just about ready to begin the Knights of the Nine EP / quest.

My character has leveled-up nicely over the past few days and he now has some pretty good armor, weapons, rings, spells, potions, etc.

Have decided to complete the KotN EP before starting Shivering Isles or any player-created quest mods.

Regarding the latter, I did download the Lost Spires mod and it sounds great. So I'm really looking fiorward to it and numerous others this time around.

Cheers, Terry

Knights of the Nine is very cool

a word to the wise...at the end of the quest...

Spoiler Alertthere is a part where you and your band of new friends will run at speed across Cyrodil, be prepared to help them by nudging...you can push NPCs in the game ....around obstacles and fences...sometimes they get over eager and run into dead ends but it is a lot of fun.

Thanks for the tip, Cris.

However, since this is a replay of Oblivion where I am mostly interested in the two official EPs and a group of select player-created mods, I have decided to judiciously employ a limited set of cheat codes.

The first is to reveal all map markers (which allows you and your party to fast-travel to most locations without first having to explore the entire world map and "discover" specific, quest-related places.

The second is to give my character excellent speed / acrobatic agility in order to traverse the huge landscape faster and more easily from the start.

Otherwise, I have been leveling-up via the original main quest plus some key side quests to improve abilities and gain skills / items / fame without cheats.

Using these console codes let's me pop around the map sooooooo much more quickly and race across smaller sections of the sprawling landscape to reach towns, quest givers, etc.

If my work schedule allowed for near-endless game sessions, I would probably replay the whole thing normally. But alas, time for fun is limited and I have a massive list of other great PC games in numerous genres missed along the way and still waiting to be tackled.

Cheers, Terry

That sounds fine but you will need to travel at the normal game speed at the end of the quest to keep an eye on your group.

Thanks for the heads-up, Cris.

I will be sure to keep an eye on the relative speed factor and make whatever adjustment is necessary to match my fellow knights.

For now, I'm still in the early stages of searching for ancient armored artifacts, which is a solo affair as far as I know. So the extra speed boost and ability to fast travel around Cyrodiil is a big help timewise with no real downside.

That said, I would not recommend using those cheat codes for a first run through the game as the player would miss so much of the wonderfully detailed landscape and bypass a bunch of nice side quests along the way.

Hey Terry, do let us know when you're playing Shivering Isles.  I've also just re-installed all my DLC, and might join you in a Knights of the 9 playthrough.
id you also get Mehrunes Razor?

I also still need to finish the Thieve's guild, and redo some of the Dark Brotherhood quests in order to do the Vampire quests.

No, that official add-on did not come with the GOTY DVD edition.

However, I might look into buying and downloading it after finishing Knights of the Nine, Shivering Isles, and The Lost Spires.  But it wil have to be a standalone file that installs with the non-STEAM, retail, PC version of Oblivion - as I really don't want to purchase the original game a third time.

A link to the legal PC (not Xbox) version of the add-on would be great...

Yes it is very nice, and I approve of your obtaining it directly rather than Steam, I do not support Steam nor do I think it is a good direction for things to go in, we have way too much dependence on the "system" as it is...one sunspot and everything will go bye bye.

Enjoy that is a fun add on.

What a pity all the DLC didn't come with the GOTY version.  Since I'd bought the original version of Oblivion, and then later patched it with the expansion packs when they were released in boxed version, it seems I managed to get all of the official DLC that way.  I have the DVD box version of this Knights of the Nine release, which includes:
Horse Armor, The Orrery, Wizard's Tower, Vile Lair, Thieves Den, Mehrunes' Razor, and Spell Tomes. There's also a new faction and quests for noble characters that will answer the questions surrounding the Ayleid ruins found throughout Oblivion. Battle against a sorcerer-king and his demonic minions while exploring massive dungeons and searching for legendary relics: The holy armor and weapons of the Divine Crusader.

Pity the pack is so unattractively highly priced. Mehrune's Razor is nice, but not really worth that price, I don't think.  It is nice having the Wizard's Tower if you're a mage.  I never really used Vile liar, since I never became a vampire (to be remedied at some point in the future)  or the Thieve's den either.

The one thing I do remember is that being a master thief, assasin (and I presume a vampire too) and the Knights of the Nine quest don't go well together, since a certain level of infamy precludes you from wearing the knight's armor.  I remember there was a stage where I was unable to equip the nice sword & armor that the quest brings, because I was too... 'evil'?  I was told I was not "worthy" of equipping the holy items.

I don't use any texture mods for Oblvion because many of them are not well made and or asign strange things weird colours...some modders just dont have good taste as for colour and graphics alterations....

the high rez ones are decent as they dont change anything but the texture size...Quarl did some good ones..but be careful.

If you run into real trouble the best place to ask questions is the site for Tess Alliance for some of the best modders hang out there...and they are very nice and helpful..and they also have free Master Classes in mod making.

Well, I lied about the order of new-content play.

Following a series of a marathon sessions, I finished Knights of the Nine this afternoon and my character is proudly wearing his wonderful, new armor and clutching his great, new sword. But I then wanted to re-explore a little more of Cyrodiil before transporting to the Shivering Isles (you know, just to show off and get my well-deserved props / hero worship) and of course had to at least take a peek inside the Archeology Guild that suddenly appeared just south of Imperial City.

Needless to say, I got hooked on the Lost Spires quest immediately by some surprisingly good, in-depth NPC voice work and attention to detail.  So now I'm off to help rid the first mysterious, ancient ruins of unwanted occupants.

Oh... and no worries about texture mods. I haven't used any other than the most highly recommended single package to increase overall, existing detail and add a more active natural environment. However, I understand that The Lost Spires includes some new cave and creature re-textures plus a variety of new meshes, items, etc.  So far, it all looks great!

Otherwise, I only installed the two best mods for improving the original stat-screen GUI and in-game maps.  All else is plain-vanilla Oblivion plus the two main EPs with just the official patches applied.

Cheers, Terry

Allllllright, something is going on here.  I've been playing Oblivion with the same set of mods for at least over a year and have not seen what I saw tonight.

--a topless woman archer in town
--a young female thief suddenly appears and starts shooting arrows at me until I had to slay her
--three guards in Chorrol were walking along when suddenly one of them starts hacking at the back of another and kills him

What next?  Strange random things...unless I've unlocked something I hadn't before.  Still.. I like it !

Strange happenings in Cyrodiil, Halcyon.

Not sure what's going on there with the topless archer and psychopathic guards, but it sounds kind of fun.

Meanwhile, my extended replay of Oblivion is also progressing nicely.

Having now finished both official EPs and the wonderful Lost Spires quest mod, I decided to follow the full Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild paths. Both have proven challenging and satisfying.

Also grabbed a couple more top-rated big quest mods named Bartholm and Kvatch Aftermath to add even more extra content while polishing off the Gray Fox thief missions.

As the new (working-class) Count of Kvatch, I'm helping restore the town to its former glory and staving-off threats from maraurders, necromancers, and sundry other baddies in the immediate area. Tough work yes, but the perks are amazing - including use of Castle Kvatch as a safe haven. Then, after saving his beloved daughter from an evil mage, I bought a great house at a huge discount from the Count of Bartholm and am currently climbing the ranks of the town's arena champions. Next, I will book passage aboard a ship for a nearby island, which is part of the same mod.

I just love the moddability of Bethesda's RPGs. While SP-only, they provide massive game worlds with tremendous replay value, plus there is a ton of additional, free content available at this point.

Cheers, Terry

Glad you're loving the mods.  I haven't heard of the two you mentioned, so I'll be sure to get them.

The female thief, BTW, was in the center of crowded Skingrad. All she wanted to do was shoot me full of arrows for no good reason.

I saw a couple of other nude females (of various species!) wandering around town, so it must be the Crowded Cities mod, which adds a lot more people to cities (obviously) and it really makes a great difference.

those are features of the Crowded City mod and will make your life more interesting. If you get attacked run away or take cover..the guards will come and help out asap.

I have learned of a couple of amazing quest mods that I did not know about before...one of the most impressive is:

Dibella's Watch 1.0

http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/files/file/963-dibellas-watch/
* * * * *

Screenshots
Description
DIBELLA'S WATCH
Gods and Mortals

By Antiscamp, Version 1.0

It was said that the Goddess of Beauty and Love herself created the Island. She created it for all the enemy races and fighting factions of Tamriel; as a haven in peace and tranquility, where all petty grievances would be forgotten, and there would be no cries of war and no clash of arms. She painted Her island like a piece of art. She made it with lush forests, streaming rivers and fertile farmlands; She raised mountains in the north and in the west, made beautiful islands and painted endless plains. She made the land for a beautiful people who She drew from all the races of Tamriel.

The People of the Goddess worked the land and erected great buildings and monuments; they explored, they learned and they grew in numbers. Their achievements were many and their society grew strong, although the road ahead was sometimes rocky and rough. The Island of the Goddess became the Paradise in Tamriel that the Goddess had planned for. Indeed as close as could be with mortals and not gods running it.

But in the far west, the snake in paradise raised its head. The dark Deadtree Clan formed its black legions and stormed down from its prison in the mountains; to conquer, to pillage and destroy the peace She had installed. Angered and spurred by their devilish gods, they broke through, grew their numbers, raised their barbarian banners and set the march east to destroy civilization and beauty once and for all. Dibella's beautiful island was about to be torn by war and fire.

STARTING OUT

There is boat transport to Dibella's Watch from Cyrodiil. Go to Anvil and speak to the Orc at the docks, and he'll take you by sea transport to the island and you'll land at the docks at Port Zerrva. You can also talk to the female orc near the Floating Bloat at Imperial City Waterfront for transport to Port Constanze in Dibella's Watch. There are captains at the docks in those towns in Dibella's Watch who can transport you back to Cyrodiil too when you wish to leave Dibella's Watch.

To start the main storyline quest, travel to Shardville which is already marked on your map when you arrive in Dibella's Watch. you will either be approached by a Deadtree warrior who will start conversation with you, or you can search by the Governor's body to find a note that starts the main questline.

The continent is large and there is a lot to see and do; so you might want to start out with some exploring before you tackle the main quest, but it's your choice. The eastern parts of the continent are quite safe, with few enemies, but the further west you get, the more dangerous the land becomes. Dibella's Watch will require a well-established and experienced character to tackle the beasts of the west and the main storyline.

--------------------------------------------------------
it is made by a master mod maker, a member of the Mod Makers Guild that I am a member of, some of the best and brightest who craft things for OB...and it sounds like a lot of fun, i plan to play thru it soon.

Thanks, Chris.  That mod sounds great!

I'm loving Windows 7 so far.  Sleek.  Also upped my RAM to 8 and getting a new vid card (ATI Radeon HD 6870).  Should be good to go for 11/11/11

Just wanted to mention that the OBLIVION GRAPHICS EXTENDER OBGE has been updated to version 3.0

Also a few cool new mods have been added like openable transparrent windows and openable doors.

I must clear that you need a very powerfull pc if you want to have the new OBGE with the high res textures, high polygon models and also openable transparrent windows and openable doors as the computer has also to render the interiors in real time and it needs a lot of cpu and video processor power and a lot of memory...

In any case its incredible......Yet after i played Oblivion for 8 months and finished all quests/all official addons and the expansion pack (with a couple of mods like high res textures, lod fix, realistic weather, unnoficial patch and the deadly reflex mods),i am tempted but i probably skip replaying oblivion...I probably pick up Skyrim a launch but i wait a couple of months to have the game patches a bit...
