Deleted UserI don't know, something about the architecture just seems wrong, distorted somehow.  Perhaps it's just me or else I have done something radically wrong. I searched briefly on the net but didn't see anything that really helped. :-/

Hi sorry was away.

I would suggest no special effects, both HDR and Bloom mess with the game's inner beauty. If you have a good system and it sounds like you do, increase the options when you are in the game, esp the video options, you can increase the draw distance for objects, pick high detail reflections, all the shadows except for Self Shadows, that looks weird even on the best systems...and you will be find. Anti Alias can be 2 and that will give you a bit more sharpness.

As for other things to add, I suggest a number of them to enhance the world...

Passive Wildlife makes the wild animals ignore you and go about their own business otherwise you are fighting something all the time which isnt much fun.

Open Borders..it opens up the borders of your world

Cities Alive adds people to the cities and makes them seem alive...

you can improve all the NPC faces with a number of fixes and your main player character as well, by adding hair, skin and face mods in several simple steps.

several of the lighting mods add lights to all the windows at night and that really helps.

let me get some links for you.  Also some very nice simple mods add houses and special places...here is a simple description of how to mod:

when you launch Oblvoin the very first screen shows an option for Data Files...pick that and you will get a check list of boxes..on that list will show up all the mods you add and you just put a check mark in the box and it is activated.

The mods come with a main activator file called an esp or an esm, that goes INTO the data folder of your Oblvion install, usually located in My Programs/Bethesda/Oblvion...and many mods come with custom Meshes and Textures, sometimes Icons or other stuff

the mod maker should create correct folders for you and a read me but to summarize: you place the ESM or the ESP in the Data folder, then you place the individual texture folders and mesh folders INTO what will end up being a Master Meshes and  Master Texture folder IN the DATA folder. Each mod will have named its own mesh and texture folder with the mod name...those must go INTO the master Texture and Mesh folder located IN the Data folder. If there is NO master texture or mesh folder yet, create it and then proceed. The most common mistake of beginners is to mess up the placement of the folders so that the mod cant find its parts.

back soon with linkeys.

Your building textures are fine in the pics you are just getting a weird effect from the HDR. Turn it off.

I have a 16:9 monitor (1920x1080) and Oblivion around the edges is a bit distorted.  Doesn't bother me much.

Texture size Large is correct.

Choose HDR and all defaults with it, or choose nothing and set the graphics in-game.  I set everything to Ultra.  Some battles lag.

If you crash to desktop (CTD) or otherwise freeze, it could take a few minutes after you find a way to quit for things to sort out.

I think there is only one Oblivion "official" patch you need to get.  If you bought the GOTY edition, it is already loaded.  There is an "unofficial" patch that is a mod that fixes myriad things.

Get it running smoothly first, then worry about the tweaks and patches later.

This is an easy game to set up.

To try to get ancient Morrowind to work according to today's expectations is a technical quest I tried and gave up on.

Deleted UserI turned off HDR and thankfully now the buildings and tower don't look like they are about to come crashing down.  I had previously set the resolution to 1600 X 900 which is native res for my notebook. Ultra knocks back the res to 1024 X 768 but I don't think I want that....

Anyhow, I do have a few mods running, nothing complicated though.

Up to this point I've only tried using the Oblivion Mods Manager for simple mods but hopefully I'll get better.

Oblvion Improvement Mod List: 2011

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Improving Appearance of Character and NPCs

The vanilla Oblvion people look like they are made out of potaotes and pretty ugly. that can be fixed quite easily with

these steps:

Oblvion Face Fix Pack:

http://www.gamefront.com/files/20589943/Oblvion+Face+Fix+Kit.zip

add these in this order, order is important. See READ ME in the pack

eyesNhairs4originalrace-19387.7z
IFT_Improved_Facial_Textures-5643.zip
Facial_Textures_by_Enayla-9534.7z

for NPCs

http://www.gamefront.com/files/20590132/Oblvion+NPC+Fix+Pack.zip

Beautiful People 2.6  Fixes NPCs
Beautiful Women mod 17189
Handsome Gents Addon 17189
Beautiful Bonuses Addons 17189

Oblvion Hair Fix Pack:

http://www.gamefront.com/files/20589992/Oblvion+Hair+Fix+Pack+2.0.zip

Babe Hair 1.0
Corean Hair 15568

Both are good hair mods to improve character and NPC hair.

the following are packs of useful mods to start with.....

Oblvion Mod Pack 1

http://www.gamefront.com/files/20204705/Oblvion_Mod_Pack_1_zip

910-passive wildlife-TESSource.esp
Makes the wildlife peaceful otherwise they will all attack you all the time

Better Bell Sounds esp
Improves the sounds of the bells in the towns and cities

Border Region Disabled esp
This allows you to travel to parts of the world that are beyond the map borders...

PrincessImperialCityApartment esp
This is a lovely free apartment in the main Imperial city that you can live in and own, it is located just inside the main city gate to the left on the first littl alley, look for purple flower vines over a door and go in.

Oblvion Mod Pack 2

http://www.gamefront.com/files/20204724/Oblvion_Mod_Pack_2_zip

BTModv2.20
This has an automatic installer: just turn it on and it will install what you need. this is a great GUI mod that greatly improves the menu system of the game.  IT will say in a notice Back up your Menu folder...well you probably won't HAVE a menu folder yet in your Data directory so you can CREATE one...just create an empty folder named 'menus" all small case and that will work.

Crowded Cities_12-6665.zip
This mod adds people and life to the cities of the game which are a bit empty in the vanilla form. There are two esps. one named 15 and one named 20 which adds the most people. Pick just one and activate it as above.

Illuniation WithinV 1.0
this adds lighted windows to ALL the buildings in the game and is a wonderful enhancement. add the esp and the texture and mesh folders to your Data folder as noited above.

Oblvion Cats
This adds kitties to the game, they will walk around and meow just like the real thing. Add the esp and mesh and texture folders like the other mods here and active the esp.

Portable Campsite
This adds the following to your inventory to use when you want: a nice tent, a bed roll, a stool to sit on, a campfire and a sack for stuff. Add the mesh and textuer folders and activate the esp.

Ah good, you have the best companion mod out there already. And the right hair, excellent.

Check thru my list and see if anything strikes your fancy, i checked the mods on my list with an "x" to indicate which ones i think are most useful ..some are in my mod packs for fast download as sadly now TesNexus makes you watch junk videos before each download...they are not supposed to exploit the mod community like that but i suppose it was bound to happen eventually. Mostly Modders for Oblvion are very honourable....hosts less so i guess.

Thanks, much appreciated.  I think you can understand that with someone like me who doesn't have a lot of experience with such, (OK I admit a couple of mods made FA3 look like Oblivion) the vast catalogue of available mods is seemingly overwhelming.

Now that I have screen effects disabled I went back and set anti-aliasing to 8x.  Wow, what a difference!

Good you are starting well. Glad we got you in the world safely.

As for the game..take time with the main quest..it will move things along fast if you proceed with it and some major changes will happen so take your time and explore and get to know the world, its people and their trials and tribulations, hopes, dreams and desires. Talk to everyone, and explore .... save as much as you like. Enjoy for it is an amazing living world and there is much beauty to see. I included a campsite so you can explore and sleep over in the woods, i love to do that with my horse Max. We have spend many wonderful nights out under the stars all over the world in there.

Yes mods are so many it is bewildering for us all..thousands now. Start with the basics and add as you go along.

Remember if you see a red hand icon appear when you reach out to touch something like in an inn, tavern or store, that means it belongs to someone else and if you pick it up by mistake, the guards WILL arrest you and drag you off or make you pay a fine.
Be careful.  Your reputation will preceed you. Also remember when you are talking to someone, be sure to scroll down the options list of the dialog as sometimes there are more choices than appear at first on the screen.

One of the very useful mods i put in the packs is to change the menus interface to allow you to have many more items listed on the screen, and it improves the GUI a lot.

Have fun and post with any questions. I envy you seeing it all for the first time. All of us old OB hands love to see new adventurers arrive.

CB, those waves on the top 2 screenies looks like a simple Vsync problem to me.  I have a screen with a slow framerate (60 FPS), so I tend to get that effect if I don't have my VSync on.  Do you have it enabled?

EDIT:  Nevermind, I see you got it sorted with Chris's help and all.

Well, how exciting that you're also becoming a TESser now, CB!  8-)

Just my humble little advice:  Once you have enough mods to make the game look nice, (especially those ugly NPC's) first play all the vanilla quests and expansions that came with the game, as made by Bethesda before you start adding all kinds of other mods.

The vanilla + official expansions is already huge and has a ton of quests, and I always think it is better to experience a games' story and world as close as possible to the original before you start playing with mods too much.

Anyway, let us know when you are done with the main stuff (I did a replay of the MQ last year)  and want to start going on to things like Knights of the Nine and Shivering isles, and I'll join you, because I haven't done a replay of the latter yet, and would especially like to redo Shivering Isles, it's been such a long time since I originally played it.

I'm currently busy fiddling around with the Daedric quests.  (Or I was just before getting a new PC- I'll have to re-install everything again before commencing, which I'll do once i'm done with a few other games.)

Well, enjoy!   [smiley=happy.gif]

Actually, as long as you have a high-end system it's not hard at all  IF you know the right mods and tools to use, but agreed, that should all rather be restricted to the appropriate thread or 2 dedicated to that topic elsewhere on this forum.

Yes, the Morrowind thread details all the problems and disappointments I encountered, even though I had a brand new machine at the time.

I think the Morrowind discussion about tweaks and mods so far is pertinent here, Mr. Chris. It can certainly inform the discussion in this thread, and hasn't crossed over the subject line yet.  Heck, I might even learn something.

Back to Oblivion mods...I found the cat mod lagged my machine more than any other.  Anyone else have trouble there?   Darn cats.

Sorry about the Cats, i use the older version to avoid that usually. The new one is a bit resource intensive.

re Morrowind and the MGE, ok if you want to include it here too that is fine with me, i just thought we might confuse people. The MGE install is a bit technical but once achieved it can work. The problem was, a few months ago, they went thru a series of major steps in beta and it was very buggy and hard to get working right. It looks like things are better now and the new XE version solves many of the problems. That team is achieving miracles and the key to a really beautiful Morrowind is the wonderful texture packages made by the mod wizard Master ..Vurt. He has literally recreated a wonderful world in there...and with the MGE environmental help, it really can sing. But it does take careful installment.

I'd recommend one beautiful mod:  The Monastery of Eru.  I won't spoil it by describing it, but it is just a wonderful place to go.

And if you love Oblivion and have not played The Lost Spires mod, shame on you.

H I am making a custom set of NPCs for the Monastary including monks working in the garden, cooking supper, and doing torchlight walks to prayers and some guards to keep out the wandering goblin or two...i will share when i get their schedules all set. The maker of that great add on has given me permission.

glad you mentioned it, it is a truly sublime place.

/me hangs her head in shame.

I know you mean me,
and I'm getting on it as soon as I re-install my Ob and get it going properly again.   :-*

As for the monks, i'll wait for Chris to add his additions.  Sounds cool.  8-)

Currently though I am on a task taking me west towards Anvil.  I couldn't resist a few side excursions, or rather dungeon crawling I believe it is called, through the Greenmead and Grayrock Caves and the Derelict Mine. I am a bit shy though when swimming underwater with V.
So far my only frustration is with the locks.  I understand how the locked chests work with the tumblers and such, but I still haven't figured out how to master the proper technique to pick them (and not waste picks) other than using F5 and F9 along with some luck. :-/

I always cheated the lockpicking in bethesda games, it's no fun at all.

Spoiler Alert
just bring up the console, click the thing to unlock, and type unlock

Mark, you have to do a bit more than that, but I didn't find the lockpicking at the least fun or engaging, plus is nearly impossible to master for such a crucial element in the game.

Still, it can be done.

I think what they should have done was to go with the system that determines whether or not you could simply open a lock based on your character's current agility attribute score. That would have been perfectly acceptable for me and by doing so would give one the freedom to asign points accordingly depending on their own style of game play.

Hehe, well at least I have another option to try. :-/

Deleted UserSpeaking of relationships it has been a while since I've initiated a conversation with my companion.  I shouldn't forget to do that more often and on that note I guess I need to tread carefully with that particular subject based on the topics that appear in the dialogue subject list...I'll definitely keep any other escapades in my past (?) to myself as I certainly don't want to give the wrong impression as to my noble intentions.

Hm, it would be a pity to start on a cheating binge before you've played the game proper.
There are many ways to open locks - you can buy unlock or "open" spells if you're a mage.  The whole idea of having talent or skill points to invest in an RPG is trying to decide  where to invest to enable you to do things that you can't do when you start off in the game, with no skills earned.

If  you want to play a thief type and invest in your lockpick skills, it is quite possible to "override" the lockpick minigame if you don't enjoy it (I personally rather do, but then I don't open all that many locks, I suppose it can become tedious) or otherwise, of course if you're a mage, then investing in alteration and a good "open" spell is always useful.

Heh- I must say that playing the game with a companion is an unfamiliar concept to me.  Do these companions level up alongside you?  I always used to hate the kind of quests where you have to take people to places and protect them - they'd often get in the way (so you end up accidentally hitting them) or get stuck.  Though I realize that of course you must be using some mod for this companion you are talking about.

Hey, - I'm lying...- I do admit that I rather used to enjoy sharing the Black Stallion lodge and Black Bow hunting adventures with "sir" Mazoga the orc. However, she never got in the way (unlike the elf in that "group" Fighter's guild quest (where you clean out that mine with a few buddies).

She did once get killed while I was doing some business of my own, though.  I was very sad to find her corpse lying in the road one day.  Luckily she's still alive in my current game.

Some of the orcs in the game are a treat..

Deleted UserNo, I don't plan on cheating, at least for the time being.  I had the opportunity to purchase the spell for the easy locks but it was too expensive so I continue with the current method.

Actually I find the companion adds a lot to the game, although I could imagine where it might be a distraction.
Since I haven't yet leveled up (this whole level up system is entirely unfamiliar to me, where are the XP's ?) I can't say what effect that will have.  I have her combat mode set to attack only when she is attacked, and being that I seem to be the one doing most of the fighting she hasn't had the opportunity to show off her skills very much.  Seeing that I am presently going back into a new cave I ought to play around some with those settings.

Time passes..... Nice to see she can indeed be quite useful.  Her fighting style is intesting but I suppose also contemporary. The taunting is certainly worth taking note. Click HERE to view.
