Maybe this should go in the technical area, dunno.  But I'm interested in knowing how laptops stand up to PCs today for AG gaming.

What's your laptop?  What's the best?  Specs?

I bought my son a great ASUS and he loves it (still, only 2GB RAM). He plays FPS and lots of online huge multiplayer games and is satisfied.  Frankly, I'm rather surprised, having come from the school who switches out to the best vid card like I do running shoes.

All insights and comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

Most of my AG playing has been with laptops of all sizes including Sony Vaios, Toshiba Librettos to IBM Thinkpads. I also wrote a series of articles for Adventure Lantern on the subject.

For the most part, when it comes to AGs, laptops can do almost anything desktops can do with the one exception and most AGs except for some of those in the last 3 or 4 years can run under CPUs of 700mHz or less and most of those before around 2000 could run on CPUs of 400mHz or less.  The one exception is that sometimes the onboard video of laptops (particularly Intel's video) doesn't work with certain games. One of the best examples of that is/was the more recent version of Safecracker which didn't play on most laptops.

The future ain't what it used to be!

I'll admit that I don't think that I've played any "bleeding edge" games on my laptop (during the approximately-year that I've had it, I believe), but thus far I think that I've been pleased with its performance - at the least it seems to be a noticeable improvement on my old computer (a desktop, as I recall).

It remains to be seen how it handles something fairly recent - I'm looking forward to trying out Dragon Age, for instance - I think, however.

My system specs:
Toshiba Laptop
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
2GB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, 512MB RAM
Windows XP Professional

MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

*ahem*

Sorry.

4 year old Toshiba Equium with 1.4ghz celeron processor, Radeon 200m EXpress card and 1gig RAM...Last 2 games I played on it were Secret Files 2 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2009, no lag or jaggies or anything. i'm actually amazed at what little power you need for some recent games!

I am looking to upgrade however, but you don't need to spend a fortune, there are some pretty powerful looking laptops on sale in the UK right now for around 450 pounds (700 dollars)..

I have 3 laptops.

-- A 14" tablet PC for work.
Dual core, tons of ram , etc etc.
It has ran almost every game I have installed.
Some game were met for tablet PC. Lay screen back and sit on the
couch with my feet up and play away...of course after finishing work
files...

--A 6" Mini PC Fujitsu u810. This fits in my coat pocket and goes
most anywhere I go. It runs full Windows XP, so any program
will work. Games run fine, except it doesn't have a CD drive, so
I have to use the (evil) CD emulation program.
Works great on planes and in tight cramped places, where you have time to spare. Also works as a great eBook reader.

-- 15" monster Win 98 laptop for "oldergames/ DOS games. This one has to stay on the desk, too heavy for holding.

I have only run across a couple of game that will not run on any of my laptops. (Mainly because of the integrated graphics cards)  99% of the games I have purchased work.

Its more fun to sit on the couch  in the evening and play games than at the desk.

My thinking exactly, SAM.  Thanks so much for your comments.  I think this mobility factor might open doors for Adventure developers, if they make a traveling game where you combine digital gameplaying with real-life locations and seek-and-find quests of all kinds.  Google maps and GPS could be utilized as well.

I have an Acer 8.9" netbook, and some adventure games won't run at all. Something about the graphics card. I even have trouble with some casual games, having to resize manually or loose the bottom part of the screen, or also not working at all. But it's a good little machine and I do like it...but I will be glad to get back to my desktop computer.

Skeeter:

Most Netbooks  only have a 600-tall resolution. Most games want at least a 760 tall resolution.

Look at specs when you buy computer if you are going to game.

ATom processor is terrible for shared graphics.

Try downloading latest video driver from manufacturer. This will
fix some of your problems.

I got all new drivers, direct x etc when trying to get ToMI to work. I got this laptop to keep in touch with family whilst overseas for a year, skype, email etc. But when I had a little spare time I thought I'd play a few games. I thought that casual games and episodic games would work...I didn't expect any large games to work. Ah well, it's not a huge deal. I'll be back soon, and then this netbook will only be used for holidays or work, and I shan't need any games on it.

It's a Netbook?  Not a Notebook?  Naturally you won't play much at all.

I got a Dell Inspiron netbook from one of my nephews in the latter part of Sept. 2009, and I love it. I put VPC with Windows 98SE guest OS and DOSbox on it and I play my older DOS and Windows 95/98 games on this netbook. I tested Amber Journeys Beyond on it last night under Win 98SE in VPC and found that for the most part, I can play Amber Journeys Beyond on this netbook (Amber Journeys Beyond is famous for not running in XP or being problem-metic in XP.)

All the older games I'd tried on this netbook since I got it run just fine. I also play DVD movies on this netbook and use VLC to do screenshot captures from these movies, I use XnView to do screenshot captures of the games I play in the netbook.

Hey, I like that! When Mom and I went to my sister's house this past Labor Day I took my netbook with me and played Lost in Time. And when Mom shops at WalMart/Macy's/the mall, I tag along with my netbook, a game, get "parked" at a cafe/food court/McDonald's where I get a cup of hot tea and I play a game while Mom shops. Also, if my sister invites Mom and I to her house this Thanksgiving or on Christmas Day, I'll probably take my netbook along with me plus a game or 2, and I'll game on!

I recall adding up all the expenses I've incurred for laptop gaming once - I still blame SirDave for making it look so attractive -

Laptops and adventures were made for each other.

What?
