Well, to be honest, I had set tactics off for my mages, since I don't want them wasting spells on targets I did not want them to be used on. So I micro-manage every single move my party makes. Slow going, sadly, but more satisfying in the end.
What I find saves my skin, tends to be area effect spells, all Morrigan's lovely "freeze' and "stun" spells, and Wynne's healing definitely saved my skin a few times too!
My own character is a dualwielder that deals a lot of damage, while Alistair tends to distract the crowd from behind his shield.
Don't underestimate dear doggie, btw!

Yes, perhaps I should have said "managing your party"; I did not mean the tactics feature of the game.

My player character is a mage, and she has both Cone of Cold and Mind Blast; I find them a huge help toward winning a fight.

Now, let's see, where is WASD? Right now, I have to look down!

Can I still go and do the Brecilian Woods first, if I gave the grimoire to her on the way back to Recliffe from the mage's tower?
I believe you can actually do it at your leisure. I haven't did that quest yet and I've been off doing Denerhim and the Wardens Keep (which was quite short, but good).
Will probably hit it up next then head off to the forest afterwards.

Thanks for the links, Chris. ...though you don't have to have tattoo's - you get to make your own face, and you don't have to put tattoo's on any of the origin's faces. They are simply available if you felt like having tattoo - comletely optional.
The no fixed NPC autolevel one looks like one I should really have had earlier on in the game...
PS. I am dire need of that Time Stop spell...

PS. I'm looking for a cheat or something how to remove one spell from a mage's repertoire, and add another spell in it's place. I'm afraid I've made a wrong choice or two...

I must just mention that this game is amazing in some parts. 8-) I'm really starting to love the story parts of it - it just so much more gripping than Bioware's most recent previous attempt at high fantsy, NWN2.

Status : Offline | found another mod this one from the Bioware mod section:
this allows you to change things in your party that may help with that pesky spell change: just be careful installing as it changes the source code, make back ups
DAO CHARCTER RESPECIALIZATION V1.5
http://social.bioware.com/project/469/
Allows the player to reset the attribute, specialization, spell, talent and skill points of any party members. ==============================================================
Description UPDATE - 1.5 is here ====================== Here is the latest version of the mod, v1.5.
I'm happy to say that this is probably the first release that did not need any major bugfixes. Most of the
changes are related to the PRCSCR 2da override, kudos to Craig Graff for his help!
- Fixed: The raven now shows up outside of Flemeth's hut. Now you can spec Morrigan out of that crazy
shapeshifter specialization right away!
v1.5 source code and 2da overrides are of course available.
Known Issues v1.5 ============== None? No seriously, I have no confirmed issues with the mod right away, how awesome is that?!
As always, I'm looking forward to any kind of feedback!
Enjoy
HOW TO USE IT ============ Look for a Raven next to the fallen tree in the player camp or next to the ruined statue in the exterior of
Flemeth's hut.
Hold TAB key to find them easier or check the screenshots from the gallery.
INSTALLATION ===========
Use "bin_ship\daupdater.exe" from your Dragon Age Origins installation directory to install downloadable
content.
In case you experience serious problems and wish to remove the addon, all you have to do is delete the
"WRK_RESPEC_MOD" folder from: Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\AddIns\WRK_RESPEC_MOD
IMPORTANT =========== This mod pokes around with your character statistics, use it at your own risk. At least make a savegame before you try it.
The mod does not grant you character specializations that are tied to the campaign, such as Champion, Reaver,
Blood Mage and Duelist. However, if you have aquired these specializations throughout the storyline you are not
loosing them either.
The mod takes into account all kind of bonuses you gain to your base stats during your adventure, including the
points you get during the Fade and from skill books all around the world.
USE THE SOURCE CODE AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOU CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HARM TO YOUR GAME IF YOU DON'T PAY ATTENTION
Version History =========== 1.0 Initial release - 1.1 - Fixed doubled attribute points on the level up screen 1.1 - Fixed compatibility issue with Crag Graff's Storage Chest mod 1.1 - Temporary workaround Virulent Walking Bomb and Tempest Mage spells crashing the client. 1.1 - Fixed issues with wrong target when the potion used from the character stat page 1.1 - Fixed issue with effects staying on the character after the removal of the ability that grants it 1.1 - Fixed issue with stealthy characters remaining in stealth after removal of Stealth rank 2. - 1.2 - Fixed the client crashes upon resetting casters (hopefully, only could test with premade characters) 1.2 - Disabled resetting of DLC character Shale until the abilities are implemented - 1.3 - Added the option to learn class specializations 1.3 - From now on attributes reset to the default base value defines by the characters race and core class
combination. 1.3 - Added an extra raven to the exterior of Flemeth's home. Look around the ruined statue. - 1.4 - Fixed: Client crash errors due to multiple instances of the same spells in the quickslots of the
actionbar. (Mage and Morrigan crashes) 1.4 - Fixed: Sten now resets to the Qunari Warrior base attribute values 1.4 - Fixed: The dog companion now resets to the Mabari Warhound base attribute values 1.4 - Added: You can now respec Shale, the DLC extra character - 1.5 - Fixed: The issue with the raven not spawning outside of Flemeth's hut.

Status : Offline | re no fixed npc auto lv, what do you all mean by this?
My party members don't auto lv (there is an option in the character screen that you can toggle it to on, but it's off by default) and they still gain exp if you have them in camp and not in your active party. Once you are in camp you can just cycle through the character menu's and click the lv up button and pick what you want for them.

| Deleted User | Regarding the difficulty we posted about earlier: from Ostagar to Redcliffe and surroundings, had seen a huge increase in difficulty for me, but now I'm starting to suspect that it was partly that I had not the tools and the strategies worked out yet to turn my party into the formidable one it is now.
So, if any of you out there find that the game suddenly feels too difficult for you, please don't despair. There is hope, and things will get easier again.
Indeed, so hard did I find the game at a stage, that I had actually set the game down from "Normal" to "Easy" for a short while, but then I started getting better spells for my mages, and I turned my warrior into a mean, mean dual wielder (best thing I could have done). Gosh, now she'll even eat dragons for breakfast! (Ok, only baby dragons, but still! : )
Because a friend of mine was playing the game on normal all the way, I had set it back to normal difficulty a while ago, and found myself dying a lot and generally struggling - but now that I've decided to go and fetch Shale, and have gained some large area spells, things have suddenly become so easy, even on "normal", that I've decided to try going on "hard" and see how it goes.
I really hope I have not spoken too soon... : ...but anyway, my point is that if you're at a point where you feel you're despairing because the game has suddenly become a lot more difficult, don't despair, because there does seem to be a bump in the road that one just has to sit tight and push through it.
Will be posting some screenies soon to show off all my cool armour and weapons... 8-)
Have you been writing exams, Ines?
Don't worry Chris and Ines - you're not far behind, - this seems to be quite a big game, I must say! I wonder what happened to CB, btw.

That is exactly where I am right at this very moment, Stiler! Gee, are you there too, or just finished it, you say? Amazing that we're in exactly the same area...
I've just unlocked a certain door a while ago, and still busy fighting my way through the Ruined Temple. I'm really having trouble with Spoiler Alertthese blasted Ash Wraiths though...
Spoiler AlertThat rhinoceros animal gave me a huge fright too. Luckily I managed to shatter him before he could kill any of us.
PS. Talking of which: have you by any chance got any tips as to what kind of damage hurts Ash Wraiths?
