Looks like a very nice "pit," as "pits" go GreyFuss. Looking at that shelf unit for housing the PCs and such, it seems like such a perfect fit that I wondered if you might have built it yourself?

Status : Offline | My primary system is a little embarrassing right now. It's a barebones system that I reluctantly bought to fill in when my former computer unexpectedly blew out its motherboard a few months ago.
Compaq Presario SR5710Y Windows Vista Home Premium AMD Dual Core 4450e 2.3 GHz 3 GB RAM Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE Integrated Graphics Integrated sound 250 GB Hard Drive (I also have two 250 GB external drives)
So I found myself using three things I never wanted to use: A Compaq system, Vista, and integrated graphics. Especially integrated graphics. It's even worse than I imagined. Now that Windows 7 has released, I'm ready to look for a new system though.
Oh, and I do have an older system running Windows 98 for older games, a 10 year old Dell Dimension 4100. An oldie but a goodie, it keeps on chugging along. Overall, it's had fewer problems and runs smoother than the four year old system that blew up on me.

| Deleted User | Right now I don't know all the details regarding Microsoft's solutions, but that little six year old Chinese girl on the popular US TV commercial makes W7 look like a no-brainer and and an end to all fears. :-/ In the meantime I'll try my best to keep both my XP and Vista PCs ready and able to the task.

Friggin' sweet setup you have there. I've been debating on taking one of these old clunkers I have and setting up a Win 98 system for the older stuff.
I just got done spending a week trying to isolate a persistent crashing over here. In the end, I just went ahead and bought another HD and reinstalled everything. This time though, I'm going to run out and buy another HD and mirror my now pristine setup before I start loading up other junk. Talk about going through withdrawals over here not having a PC... >

Thanks Camaroboy but I can't take credit for building the cart that the computers are on. I had this very inexpensive TV stand stored away and with a few modification of my own was able to make everything fit quite nicely. Only thing I need now is a Pot Bellied Stove like yours. Did you install that yourself?

It is frustrating though that I just went through this routine a year and a half ago. Not a very good span of time between hard drives, but I think I brought this one on. I used to keep my PC running all the time, but in the last 2 years I've been turning it off when I go to bed, go to work, go out, etc. All those boot ups add a lot of extra wear on the drive from my understanding. :-/

While I search, can anyone recommend an inexpensive source for Windows 98?

If you are just looking for the software then there are tons available on Ebay even brand new sealed and official. A lot could be had for a reasonable price. Make sure you are buying the full version and preferably the Second Edition and not the upgrade version but then you probably knew that.

Ugh, that's horrible, Ivinia! So sorry to hear about that... believe me, I know about PC withdrawal - had it just over two weeks ago while away for 9 days without even a laptop..
Unfortunately, Murphy seems to dictate that electronics will always break whenever you need your appliance or PC the most, isn't that just the truth?

And this summer, once school is out, and I've found my desk again under all the papers, I'm definitely setting up my W98 machine on my as-yet-unopend Belkin switch, so I can finish the games on it.
I'm not often impressed Greyfus, but you managed it.
I'm not often jealous but you managed that one too.

Well, since I guess I was around 5 or 6 at the time of the installation, the question of whether I helped with the installation should be re-phrased to something like did I stay out of the way.

What kind of Keyboard is that? Seems like another layer of keys above the normal set.

Yea, I suppose it does look like a rather interesting keyboard in the pic. In truth it is just one keyboard in front of another since there are two PCs involved. Give me a hand here guys gals, I'd like to be able to control both PCs using a single KB and Mouse and to not have to re-connect the video cable every time I go from one PC to another. It looks like some of you have easily mastered this issue. I have seen a mention of using multiple computers connected by a KVM switch. I really appreciate the help and to know more.

Does Windows 7 have compatibility issues as Vista did? Is the switch to Windows 7 a valuable upgrade or can us XP users live without it?

Camaroboy
There are many KVM Switches to choose from. You can buy them for just connecting 2 computers to connecting many. Some inexpensive and some more. Most are really very easy to use. Here is some info on them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kvm_switch and here also at NewEgg http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010290143&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&Order=PRICE
