Deleted UserHello fellow adventure gamers,

my name is Mike from Germany and this is my first post except my posts advertising  our website www.savegameserver.com :-)

To introduce myself:
I always play adventures together with a good friend of mine (Jochen, the guy i designed the website with). Well, we don't exactly play the games together, we just meet to play the same game at the same time on two different pc's. We enjoy competing on who will finish the adventure game first and we enjoy talking about the game while we play it without giving the slightest hints, trying to figure out how far the other one has progressed in the game.
It sounds weird maybe, but i can assure you its much more fun than playing alone.

Like any intelligent person, our favorite games are riddle adventures
like myst, riven, rhem i, rhem ii, obsidian, schizm.
Of course Riven is the best game ever with Rhem II being a close second. And of course Knut is the best adventure-riddle designer in the universe.

So, did i make friends already? :-)

Ok, now my question: As we like all kind of adventure games, we decided to play some games of the Leisure Suit Larry series but, due to lack of time and the desire to play many other games, we only want to play the really good ones. The leisure Suit Larry games get very contrasting reviews.
So my question is, which games of the series can you recommend,
and which not?

thanks for helping us out,
Mike

Deleted UserAlthough I played the first five of these games back in the day at home and at work, the games are just so darned old that it’s tough to really recommend them. Just took a look at the review here for Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love For Sail (the last official LSL game with Al Lowe)

http://www.justadventure.com/reviews/LSL7/LSL7.shtm

Sounds like the reviewer really appreciated the subtlety.  :
I don’t know why I hadn’t noticed this before.  Sounds like I should do myself some justice and get this one soon for myself.   Who knows, it just might keep you guys entertained.

If you aren't big on really old dated adventures I say start from Larry 5 and up. The first three are really funny, but if you aren't familiar with "sierra logic" you may be stuck for long periods of time.

Larry 5 basically plays itself, no puzzles just humour. Make sure to grab the copy protection document for the plane rides.

Larry 6 is good stuff, wide open and lot's to do. Speech too, make sure you get the high resolution CD version (you know, the one NOT included in the new VUgames collections?)

Larry 7 is the best of the lot. In fact if you wanted you could easily jump right in if you wanted a taste of Larry - since it's not like these games are story based. No need for previous knowledge.

LSL7 is my favourite, with LSL6 coming in for a pretty close second. I just loved these games! I think the VGA version of LSL1 is fun and a good time waster, however I wouldn't bother with the second and third ones. I played them all the way to the end out of principle but I really didn't have too much fun with those two. LSL5 is a great looking (IMO) and entertaining game, but like Avatar said, it's lacking in 'genuine' puzzles.

I only played Leisure Suit Larry 7 and I think it's great. You can tell a lot of love went into that one, with a scratch-n-sniff card, changeable desktops (which change according to how far you are in the game) and the ability to put your voice and face in the game! You can also make the game much harder by removing the conversation topics so that you will have to think them up yourself.
It helps that the game itself was very good, too.

Actually, I watched a playthrough of the the 2nd and 3rd game as well.
The 3rd game looks like fun. A little unforgiving and confusing, but it has its moments.
The 2nd one looks like the worst game ever made in terms of user friendliness. There are so many ways to die and so many dead-ends, that I have no idea how anyone was supposed to finish this game, let alone enjoy it.

Deleted UserThanks to all who replied so far, it really helps!

Shany, your remark on Larry 2 conforms with a review i read recently, so we'll skip this one. Dead-Ends and random death are two of the most annoying things in adventure games in my opinion.

Larry 3 is the game of the series i am most unsure about. i have read
both good and bad reviews about it. Some say it's basically as bad as Larry 2. Some praise it's humor and clever riddles. So, any more opinions about Larry 3?

Btw, i already solved Larry 1 about 15 years ago and i really liked it
then.

More opinions are appreciated.

Cheers
Mike

PS: As no one commented my remarks about Riven/Rhem ii etc i assume everybody agrees with me :-)

Nothing wrong with Larry 2 or 3, they are just dated and unless you can handle the challenge and constant saving/reloading then it's not for you. Larry 2 actually has a few deadends too, so you have to be careful.

Larry 3 is actually pretty good. Just depends how far back you are willing to go.

You don't consider multiple dead ends to be something wrong with a game, Avatar?

Hm some of the super old ones (KQ comes to mind). The dead ends in LSL2 were pretty extreme though, with some hidden time limits that resulted in many users unknowingly saving their game with not enough time to complete required tasks, as well as those frustrating item dead ends that require you to have picked up an item you no longer have access to in order to progress through the game. After having to restart the game from the beginning at least 3 times I was at my wits end with the game  :-/ The only game I recall irritating me as much as LSL2 in the same way was KQ3.

Sacriledge! We have Lucas Arts to thank for those insufferable, mind-numbingly idiotic "design elements" becoming obsolete.

You are mixing them up with the old Sierra adventures.

Oh ! Ah, I see...  well, thank you for the elucidation and education - perhaps one day I will have managed to catch up with all the older games...

Deleted User@avatar_58: 'Larry 2 actually has a few deadends too, so you have to be careful.' Did you mean 'Larry 3 actually has a few dead ends too, ...' ?
Because you were kind of refering to Arkadia, who already mentioned that Larry 2 has multiple dead ends.

So, do i understand correctly that Larry 3 has idiotic item dead ends as well? Even worse, dead ends without a chance for the player to realize he has gotten into a dead end just because of a missing item he should have picked up 1000 hours ago?

It is absolutely beyond me why people still can praise games like that. How is it possible to praise games with such 'insufferable, mind-numbingly idiotic "design elements"', even if the game is funny apart from that.

So i still haven't decided whether to play Larry3. Is it almost as bad as Larry 2 regarding dead ends and multiple ways to die without warning?
Any recommendations on that one?

Thanks
Mike

I actually did enjoy the beginning of LSL3 quite a bit but then there was a part I found difficult/time-consuming to the point where I didn't really want to play anymore and resorted to using a walkthrough (something I hate to do) just so I could finish the game.

This part basically involved a maze and the potential to die of thirst... you have to pretty much trial-and-error reload until you stumble upon where you need to be. Ever played KQ4 or QFG3? It's similar to the deserts in those.

I think there are one or two ways to 'lose' an item and mess up the game for yourself, but it's nothing compared to how bad it was in LSL2 - not even comparable really. As with all the old Sierra games, it is possible to die in quite a few ways, although I found LSL3 is actually one of the more lenient titles of the era (minus the incredibly irritating maze).

I really did dig the atmosphere of LSL3 but the later game was extremely frustrating. I'd say try it on a rainy day

Well, you can still play them with a guide, so even if you don't get the full gameplay experience, you will still get the chance to laugh at all the jokes.

Also, i have heard a lot of good things about Leisure Suit Larry 4: The Missing Floppies, sadly I have never played it

Not surprising -- I heard it's darn near impossible to get a copy!

For me at least, if I'm not actually PLAYING a game and using my reasoning skills (aka if I've resorted to using a walkthrough), I feel like it's a waste of my time. As great as some games are, 99% of games can't compare with reading a good book when played for story/dialogue alone. I would make exceptions for the GK series and perhaps The Longest Journey, however

Deleted UserArkadia, thank you very much for your input. I feel the way we rate games is quite similar, so your opinion really counts. I guess i'll give
Larry 3 a try.
And yes, of course, the GK series and especially Longest Journey are wonderful, wonderful games. Playing Longest Journey - i found it unforgettable.

You're very welcome, Skizm

And yes, unforgettable is the perfect way to describe The Longest Journey. One of my top three most favourite games (I can never decide which is first, second or third).
