I found this for you. I had suggested toothpaste and bicarb of soda but this has a different solution.
Using a clean white cloth, blot the stain to remove any excess liquid. Coffee stain removal can also be done with a mixture of dishwashing liquid and luke warm water or with the use of 1/3 cup of white vinegar and 2/3 cups of luke warm water. You can use either coffee stain removal solution and sponge gently to remove the stain.
So good luck and if it doesn't work and you don't fancy rearranging the furniture or repainting the house, buy a pot plant.

Status : Offline | Dilute some bleach with water, dip a clean rag in it, dab the stain. You might want to do a real small dab first!
Give the bleach a little time to kill the stain. Careful though, you might end up with a extra white spots on your wall, although that might be better than brown stains on a white wall.

| Deleted User | Thank you for all your kind suggestions. I tried some of them, but the white paint started to come off, and it seems that the people who lived here before, at some stage had their walls pink? :-?
.....so I might have to revert to Mark's solution, and until I manage to get hold of the correct white paint (please let it be the same shade!), I might have to either temporarily or permanently make use of the furniture and pot plant solutions...
Ivinia, didn’t you know that potplants make very good companions? : They’re very restful to talk to, you know… - they never seem to disagree… 8-)

ALL our walls are white as are most of them here due to the hot weather during a good part of the year.
Sylvia is a pretty good artist and an exceptionally good fabric-artist. I think that more than 50% of our walls are covered with her creations. Some of the fabric wall hangings are as large as approx. 1 metre in width and 2 metres in length. Our apartment is a very average 110 metres² --- just OK when our 3 children were young --- nice and spacious now that they have all left home.
Why don't you find a nice painting or suitably sized wall-ornament to cover the unsightly accident.
Just a suggestion !!

Hmm- as the stains are quite low down, perhaps a wall-hanging might be a good idea - thanks for the suggestion, Len!

Traveller I think you'll be amazed at how many 'whites' there really are. As I recently tried to match a colour in my dining room and gave up, opting for a new tint instead I predict a difficult task ahead as you bring home all the white paint sample chips in the shop to get the best match. Good luck.

| Deleted User | Well, thanks so much for all the ideas - even if, by chance, all the "cleaning solutions" and products suggested here, won't work for these particular stains, at least I have some ideas now for stains in general!
Caroline, yes - isn't it amazing about the different shades of white? Winter White, Polar White, Fleece White, Creamy White, Ice-cream White, Icy White, Snowy white, Snow White.. [smiley=boggled.gif] One can understand there being tons of shades of cream - but white... :-?
Len - those hangings are beautiful. If your wife ever runs out of people to donate them to, you could always throw one or two in my direction... .. I especially like that second one from the top. [smiley=love.gif] The one for your son Dave is also not too bad.. 8-)
Caroline, Mark and Ivinia, I take it your suggestions regarding pot plants imply that I should try and get myself into a state so stoned that I wouldn't care about the stains anymore? :-X Quite a novel approach to the problem, but I can see it working...

Status : Offline | So, Trav, if you decide to repaint, please do this first. Get a shellac-based primer for your prime coat. Here in the States we have Kilz and Bullseye 1-2-3. It dries extremely fast, and coats any stain so it won't bleed through your top coat. Sealing the stain in also helps you get a very even finish with less topcoats.
If you are going to use white, here's an old trick: Get a bottle of Japan Black and put a few drops in a gallon of paint. It makes white paint even whiter.

| Deleted User | [size=16][font=Times New Roman] Moved a couple of places for continuity. Sylvia also makes dolls, handbags, cushion covers, patchwork quilts, paints (mainly acrylic), and so on. At nearly 80 y.o. she still reads voraciously and was a librarian for 13 years for the British Council library in Haifa until they closed it down due to budgetary cuts. She's addicted to Dave's puzzles, and plays the 'better' Quest-Adventures I pass on to her.
But she is not muscle-bound :exclamation [smiley=grin.gif]
P.S.
I can't draw even a primitive cat ! However, Syl is completely self effacing & has consistently refused to sell anything (she has given away a couple of patchwork quilts for charity) or have an exhibition or whatever even though IMO her work warrants it.
In fact, after MANY years of nagging, it was only about 15 years ago that I managed to persuade her to at least get every item photographed BEFORE she gave it away !! So at least we have two nice albums of her work which is dispersed all over the world.

Status : Offline | Sylvia knits those lovely dolls? I bought several for my boys when they were very young and they simply loved them. My youngest son's favourite was Miss LoveHeart. She was in red and white with a little heart shaped purse but we lost her on a day out - she must have fallen from the pram. I've never seen another like it but I always check out the craft stalls just in case.
Traveller - potplants are plants that live in pot. I honestly can't imagine what other sort of plant you think I'd be talking about. [smiley=angel_smiley.gif]
