Ditto.  I replayed GK 1 & 2 a few months ago and was very much struck by how far good stories in adventure games have digressed since their heyday.  I'm hoping that having Jensen back at the helm will result in a deep, engaging, and believable story that will spawn imitators and might...  just might...  partially penetrate the mainstream.  Games look to the rather one dimensional medium of movies FAR too much for their inspiration and with a few exceptions like GK and TLJ, don't use the richer, more fulfilling medium of novels as their muse.

I agree it is disappointing when playing an adventure game you get the feeling the makers are not taking advantage of the unique storytelling opportunities offered by the medium.

I mean even the most rudimentary elaboration in the form of optional interactivity, letting the player do things that are not compulsory in terms of advancing the story, even if it is just examining things in more detail.

It positively bewilders me that many adventure game creators fail to see the attraction of this simple extra dimension that can be added to the story.

As for the why, I expect that the more dialog / story / commentary, the higher the cost of localization for all the different territories.
