Has anyone tried this game?  I'm trying, but it's the first game that won't work on my video card!  I have an nVidia GeForce 2 with 32 mb...not the best one out there, but works great for every other game requiring a top notch card, such as Morrowind, Arx Fatalis, Mafia, etc.  Now, Zanzarah says it needs just a 16 mb card, so that's not the problem, but it says it needs a SECOND GENERATION video card.  Hm, anyone know what that means?  I'm certainly not going to buy a new card for that one game, but i would like to play it if possible, as it looks interesting and costs quite a bit!  Can anyone help?

By the way, the game DOES run, but the graphics are wacky, some scenes have white areas, others leave streaming image tails and blurs, making it impossible to decipher the landscape, though the characters look and move fine.

I haven't played the game, I tried the demo and wasn't sure I would like it and know this doesn't answer your questions but if you do get it running, let me know your opinion since we like a lot of the same games, would appreciate it.

Are your drivers up-to-date?  Have you gone to their site and looked for any patches?

You will probably get faster and better answers here but have you emailed their tech support giving your setup information.

you can try contacting the disributors Xicat at rvallozzi@xicat.com.  If you can get a response from this guy then you are a better person than I Gunga Din. Their technical support and contacts page has absolutely no email address or phones numbers, though they do have an office in Ft. Lauderdale.

But god luck, if their p.r. department is representative of the rest of the company, they are totally nonresponsive.

They also have forums you can post on, but guess what?  The Zanzarah forum does not work!

I've never been able to get a response from a game company re problems. I spent the most time with Everquest...foolish me, i bought the game and all the expansions on a buying splurge several months back. The game installs fine, the tutorial was a blast, but their server would not let me in to subscribe, pay and play!  I tried everything, including live tech support which they offer.  I explored the forum self-help tech support and all the FAQs too.

Hi,

Well, asked a friend who got hold of someone who knows this things and here is what he said.

hey I have a friend who has a Geoforce2 care but when she tries to play this one game it says she needs a second generation video card, what does that mean?

geforce2 doesnt support a grip of features
technically i would call a geforce3 a 2nd generation gfx card because 90% of games out today support pixel shading and vertex shading and a grip of features that were first implemented with the geforce 3 the geforce4 and geforcefx only implement new versions of the features first introduced with the geforce3 so it is entirely possible for a game to not be supported by cards predating the geforce3.

However i have never seen a game that didnt allow you to turn off advanced graphic options to run with older cards

So I guess what is being said is try turning off some or all the advanced graphic options and now you know and I know why some games don't play without tweeking.  I have GF 3.

I had also heard that GF 2 had problems.

Technically these "generations" are utter nonsense; assigning generations to cards is rather arbitrary and mostly depends on how long you've been around. I honestly don't know what the makers of the game were trying to say with "second generation card".

Just one more note - always keep in mind that GeForce 4 MX is a GF2 class card, not GF3 or GF4.

I already tried turning off all the video extras that the menus let me configure.  I don't know enough to go into the files manually and fiddle more.  Perhaps I'll just put Zanzarah away until i get my next computer in a couple years

I know you posted this a long time ago, but I just ran across your message and I think I have the answer. You have to run version 30.82 of the nVidia Detonator drivers.

Versions after that tend to not work very well with Zanzarah and a number of other games, and versions before it can be spotty.

I have a GeForce2 AGB and I couldn't even get Zanzarah to run until I uninstalled the 4x.xx version that I was using and did a clean install of 30.82. (Actually, if you don't already have version 30.82, I'm surprised you were able to play Arx Fatalis, because that game was really unstable for me on both Win XP and Win Me until I backleveled the nVidia drivers.)

The download page where you'll find 30.82 for Windows 9x is here.

The download page for the Windows 2000/XP drivers is here.

I hope you're able to play this great game!

I also had problems running Zanzarah on my old GF2, after installing older drivers I got it to work. Nvidia has been f($king up it's drivers for quite a while now.

Isn't the 4MX based on the regular GF4. That would make it the same class I think? Performance wise it isn't like the GF4, but most models of the 4MX are faster than the GF3 cards.

MX used to mean less Mhz and slower ram, but I'm not sure if that's still true, in a fit of brilliancy I switched from Nvidia to Radeon

No and no. GF4 MX is a NV10 class chip just like GF2, GF3 and 4 are NV20 class. And GF3 Ti is usually faster than GF4 MX, plus has vertex/pixel shader capability.

It's very difficult to make sense of nVidia's product line these days (not sure if ATI is better) - GF4 MX 420 are usually very slow, while GF4 MX 460 can be quite fast. GF4 Ti are pretty much all fast, GF FX 5200 may not be. A lot depends on the particular manufacturer I suspect, they use different memory speeds and that makes a lot of difference. But bottom line is, there's a lot of overlap between the product lines.

I'm pretty happy with my Radeon 9700 Pro myself

I forgot my sig.

Well right now I'd have to say that Radeon is my favorite. But I can remember that a few years back my Nvidia card was as well (that time compared to VooDoo).

Since Nvidia lost it's competition they seem to be slacking. And now that Ati has become it's main competition (coming from nowhere gaming-wise and probably having surpassed them) they don't seem to realise they need to get back in shape.

I haven't checked in the last 3 months, but before that Ati had better features, performance and drivers.

Now it's a toss-up on the high end, between Radeon 9800 Pro and nVidia GeForce FX 5900. Neither is clearly better than the other. Not sure how the price/performance ratios look in the mid and low-end markets.

I just bought the Radeon 9800 Pro and it is great.  Had GF 3 Ti, and actually for someone (me) who knows nothing of these things there is a big difference.
