OK little update. My laptop was plagued with problems (as per a previous thread) and I ended up at a stage where it wouldn't start at all, even in safe mode.
I finally reset it to factory settings after having backed up everything on an external hard drive (something I should have done a long time ago).

I'm now trying to install Still Life (a game I had previous problems installing on a different computer- installation would start but the computer would freeze at about 45-50%).

This time when I get to 49% the following message appears:

The following error occured on the file:'E:\SNLPF\MCKINPUTBLOCKS.DDL'.

Access is denied (0x5)

I then get the Abort, Retry Ignore message. At the same time my antivirus picks up a Trojan for the DDL file.

What does that mean? Should I just click ignore and try to carry on with the install, or just destroy the disk???

I can't heal the virus either, as it appears on the disk rather than my computer.

All feedback welcome!

Assuming (of course) that your Still Life disc is an original, a virus seems highly unlikely.  Moreover, "Access is denied" rather than a CRC error is damned peculiar.  Having little to go by I would suspect that your virus scanner falsly flagged the file as infected and is now blocking all access to it.  Temporarily disabling your virus scanner (or explicitly flagging the file as safe) may help.

So are you saying that I should just switch off my antivirus, install the game and see what happens?

Succinct, to the point. I like it!

ETA OK I have managed to install the game but it now appears there is a compatibility issue. Does anyone know what I need to do to get the game running on Vista?

Deleted UserI recall having to update the Starforce Driver Utilities to play Obscure on Vista.  The situation with Still Life may be similar.

Sounds like Starforce Driver is a bit of an issue. I have downloaded and installed the update, the error message is gone but the game never actually starts- the disk gets checked, the screen goes blank and then nothing happens.

From the messages posted on the thread you linked, I'm not sure I want to pursue with the game installation anymore.  :'(

This is one of the few games I was never able to get running under Vista (for the reason stated above - Starforce).

I believe someone mentioned that a downloadable version existed that didn't contain Starforce (or at least shipped with a set of Vista compatible Starforce drivers).

What?

Just to confirm for everyone, the trojan warning you get IS related to the Starforce drivers.  I re-installed Still Life a while ago so that I could replay it before Still Life 2 came out, and I had the same virus warning.  I looked into the files, and they are the Starforce drivers.

It's kind of scary when copy protection becomes so fierce that it is recognized as a trojan, isn't it? :-/

The good news is that there are 3rd party utilities available to remove Starforce once you are done with the game.

It actually scarier when Anti-Virus/Malware software can't correctly identify something as "old" as Starforce. This stuff isn't exactly new.

The removal tool isn't 3rd party - it's provided by Starforce.

Oh, I never knew that Starforce has a removal tool now!  I've always used an old third party one that I saved from years back.  That's good to know, though.  Thanks!

It may be the same tool, I don't know of another (sfdrvrem.exe). The digital signature is owned by Protection Technology, Ltd. (the makers of Starforce).

The drivers themselves were always removable in Device Manager (although you had to know what they were named).

I hope none of the adventure games that I have yet to buy (old ones as well as the latest ones) that I order from Amazon/Ebay or buy locally have this StarForce thing. So far, of all the games (my total collection incl. Thief series, Blair Witch series, my driving games) don't have StarForce.

If, in case I'm unlucky enough to get a game that has Starforce and I have to get the removal tool, will I have to buy it (I hope not)?

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I've never seen a single case of damage caused by Starforce, and apparently neither has the developer.  When they opened their "Prove It" program (which offered cash to anyone that could substantiate their "damage" claim), not a single penny was ever paid out (actually, not a single claim was ever filed, which sort of says it all).

Older versions do have compatibility issues with Vista - but, that's about it. It's no better or worse than the others. They're all a pain the butt for legitimate owners.
