i think they are called "slide show"? the only one i have played is frankenstein: through the eyes of a monster. i cant stand it.
Its boring, there isn't any action at all. You walk around picking up things and using them with other items. You walk around and use the item on something. Walking around and talking to people is really lame, what about some shooting or something~APuddleduck&&

sazka: referring to those games that you have to point, then click to move forward, backward, etc. Next scene comes up like a slide show. There is no fluidity or motion as if walking there---click and you are there in the next scene. Usually First Person games.  Example: Myst or Black Dahlia (yecccch).

It all depends...if the graphics/sounds of the scene don't grab me, or I have to go over the same ground over and over again just to collect what I need for a puzzle that's 3 miles away.....no thank you. That CD becomes a pellet-gun target or Christmas ornament....
I DO appreciate slide show games that give you a "zip" option" so you can move along and cover old ground faster. Some have maps you can bring up to "jump" to another area (as long as you have already been there)--that's OK too. But don't make me point and click, point and click over scenes where there is no interaction. That can get real dull real quick. I think that developers are starting to get away from the slide show type---gamers are demanding realism/fluidity in their games. We may be seeing the death knoll of slide show games here...

So-called "slide show games" do not bother me much, though I prefer node-with-panning, like Dracula Resurrection and Dracula Sanctuary have.

The games I find almost impossible to play are first-person games that have 3D movement. They give me terrible motion sickness unless the speed of movement can be turned way slow.

Although it is not an adventure game, try Forsaken if you have never experienced motion sickness   :
....you are in a 3D environment on a hovercraft inside an underground burnt-out city. Very detailed...right down to the hovering sensation of the craft when in a holding pattern. I HAD to quit eventually...was getting very, very ill.

I can either love or hate a "slide show" game.

I loved...

-Shivers
-Shivers 2
-The 7th Guest (drove me CRAZY...but I liked it)
-Amber: Journeys Beyound

And I hated all the rest (Myst, ect).
on't even remember a lot of the titles.  And I think I just made a revalation.  The slide show format works VERY WELL within a game that is meant to give you the creeps and scare you.  It gives you a true feeling of being alone.  In any other type of game, the format doesn't work as well.

I agree with Michael here.
Another game that benefits from this is The Dark Eye. I know, it actually isn't a "game" but a multimedia experience. Anyway, it works quite well and it gave me the creeps. It was very experimental and I'm sad that no one took ideas from this game.

No, slide show games don't get on my nerves at all.   If something about the way the game looks and sounds appeals to me,  I can really get into it.    It does work best for first person, somewhat lonely games.  Since you are looking at the scenery a lot, it helps to like the scenery.   Even in a reasonably pure slide show game, there is often a little movement (birds flying, something like that), but not a lot.

I loved Myst.   I still replay it.  I also really liked Obsidian.  There are more, I'll think of them.   After Syberia (another  game I loved), I'm currently playing Morpheus, another lonely game, also mostly a slide show game.  I'm enjoying Morpheus.  The game graphics are dated, but they look good enough for me to still enjoy them.

I was surprised that some people on this forum actually break their games.
on't you keep them all, or give them away, or sell them, or trade them?   I keep mine, but I still have room for them all.

Regards, mszv

It's not the technique that bothers me in a game, it's the puzzles. If a game has good, challenging inventory puzzles instead of a series of levers and sliders, I don't care if it's 2D, 3D, slideshow or FMV.

It depends on how well implimented it is, to be honest. Sometimes I don't mind it. Sometimes it annoys me. Ah well.

Slide-show puzzles are my favoirte kind
But the scenes really have to "slide", not just flick (?), or it could get confusing.    Some "slide-show" games don't have their scenes slide in from one side and out the other side, they just appear and this can be very disorienting.

The Slide Show format still isn't one of my favorites - but, I can tolerate it. One of my first games on the PC was the 7th guest. At least this game transitioned between the scenes so there was some sense of movement.  Myst on the other hand, just threw up another view - very hard to get use to after T7G.

I guess it all depends on the game - many do quite well in this format, while others are greatly enhanced by full 3D movement.  I've not played the remake of Myst, but I've read many a post that raves about the 3D format (and complete freedom of movement).

What?

It's what you do with it that counts.

I didn't think much of Myst because of the nature of the puzzles and the gameworld, not because it was a slideshow game.

So, in answer to your question...  I don't like Myst-style games much, but I don't care if a game is a slideshow game (depending on what the content is).

Nope, absolutely had no problem with T7G or T11H, in fact I also get very sick from games in which lots of activity is going on on the screen. :-/
It can indeed be interesting if you want to go from one place to another without going through the in-between places. It just depends on what game it's in and how the game deals with it.

Nah - they don't bug me - unless I don't like other elements of the game. Then I suppose it is really the game I don't like versus the graphics or movement mode.

And here's another rave.

The Channelwood Age in MYST was very confusing.  The Channelwood Age in realMYST was a snap.  One can pan and tilt and wander around and follow the pipes with no problem.  Full 3D made exploring the world much easier and considerably more immersive.

In fact, it was realMYST that lured me into playing the original.  Almost as if having a memory of the world in 3D made greatly simplified exploring the world in 2D.
