Deleted UserWhat kind of sick mind would tell a mother that her little child might be involved in a hostage drama when there is no trace of truth involved in it?  This morning my neighbour called me hysterically to say that apparently there is police and helicopters swarming all over the school where we both have children, and that she would like to catch a ride with me to go and see what was going on.

Of course I panicked like mad, and rushed out, and when she got into my car, she genuinely seemed to be crying and upset.  You don't want to know the scenarios that played out in my agonised mind, and I kept saying over and over - but how could this be happening with such little children? We rushed to the school, to find... -nothing. All quiet. We inquired at the front, and apparently nothing out of the ordinary had happened. My neighbour had simply been the target (and indirectly me too) of a sick joke.

We just both broke down and cried.

What the hell kind of sick mind plays that kind of joke on a parent?

Cruelty knows many paths, it seems.

Oh poor Jen....

I wish I could hug you for the terror you went through today.   Your poor neighbour will feel doubly bad because she spread her fear and misery.

Perhaps the police could trace the prank phone call?

Deleted UserWell, the most shocking part is that she heard it from someone that she knew, and she obviously believed it, because she was in a state...

I've already spoken to another neighbour now, and we're definitely going to follow it up. My other neighbour (the one I've just spoken to -her children have left school already) says she would have been livid, and she thinks I'm quite justified to feel angry.  People who do things like that, either do not think about the consequences of their actions, and/or have a serious screw loose.

How awful for you.  I hope the perpetrator of this sick joke gets strung up by his toes!  >

I would have been crazed too, who wouldnt? Especially when it involves your children. I hope they can find the idiot that thought this was fun.  >

Deleted UserYou know - I've been thinking - this must be the same kind of mindset that finds setting things to fire 'fun'.
This person, for a few minutes, enjoyed the power of seeing his words make other people scurry around in panic.  I guess an arsonist similarly enjoys watching the mayhem they cause when they set things to fire. To some extent too, I suppose it's similar to the people who think its "fun" to call out the fire-brigade/police/ambulance on hoax calls, or who cause false bomb scares.

I find it sad that some people can actually find joy in such a negative behaviour.  Of all of the "mind-tricks" I mentioned, I think this is the cruellest one though. Indescribable is the helpless agonised panick you feel when you have visions of your child being killed before your eyes, with you helpless to do anything about it.  Its actually worse than feeling that your own life is in danger.

One of the worst movie scenes for me to remember, is the scene in Sophie's choice, where the Nazi's force a mother to choose between  the lives of her two children.

It shouldn't be too hard.  You simply have to follow the trail of women who warned other women .....  I don't think I'd be waiting for the police either.   >

Such a horrible thing to do.
I can't imagine the agony you went through before you realized everything was OK.

OMG, Traveler -- that's absolutely horrific! I'm just glad it wasn't true. But what it must have put you through -- the mind reels.

I'm no psychologist, but I think things such as this are often done by people who feel they have no control over anything in their lives. Doing something like this can yield a feeling of power, as you've mentioned -- sick and fleeting though it may be.

I hope the perpetrator is caught and punished, big time. I think one of the most egregious things imaginable is to lead a mother to believe that her offspring could be in peril.

We live in a really sick world...  [smiley=sad.gif]

Was that a prank call? That person could be prosecuted. its the same as calling in a bomb scare.
