On the "Unofficial Tex Murphy Message Board" Aaron Conners posted a statement about the future of Tex Murphy today, including the circumstance that the situation about the Tex Murphy rights is no longer an issue.

EDIT: Just in case someone gets on bad ideas, the date of Aarons posting is april 3.rd!!!

Well, I'm currently in Tex's past, playing Mean Streets. Good to know that they're still eager to continue the series. I think I also read in an interview, that the next Tex is probably unlikely to be FMV (due to cost issues), not being a big fan of that sub-genre, that's good news for me.

In the context of Tex Murphy though, IMHO, it's not such a good thing. Sure, it's a fact many FMV, live-action games were disastrous at the time, but there are also some very good, even great and stellar examples of this sub-genre. And the TM series definitely belongs in the stellar category. I don't see how a non-live action TM installment is going to work, at least not to my liking (just like with Myst V). TM without Chris Jones is, well, not very appealing.

Yep, I agree, and am not saying the next Tex game should go in a different direction to the prequels, just that I may personally like it more if it does. Though, I'm just starting a playthrough of all 5 Tex games games now (only played through Overseer and bits of UaKM previously), maybe I'll see things differently by the time I'm done.

edit: for those who may not have seen it, the interview with Chris and Aaron that I mentioned in my previous post, can be found here.

While I loved Tex Murphy, I really don't get excited about news of bringing these old franchises back. The odds of them capturing the same magic in a world that has rapidly changed is pretty remote. Even if I heard about a new Gabriel Knight game created by Jane Jensen herself, I'd feel pretty blah about it I'm afraid.

The genre needs new heroes and franchises to get it excited. The fact that so many wish for the old stuff to come back just shows how little there is to look forward to and solidifies the impression that AGers are living in the past. :-/

I see your point Ivinia but for me FMV will always be the best format for adventure games.  There is just something about it that I can't explain. I have watched an hoped that 3d and 2.5d games would improve and the have over the years but they still don't compare to what a real actor can do and I don't think they ever will.  Not to mention that a lot of them cause all kinds of video card isues, and crashes, and other system related problems.
Every time I play my old Pandora Directive I think of how much better it is than a lot of the new games while also thinking about how old it is.
I still run 98 and XP in a duel boot system just so I can play these games anything I want.

I don't agree with you here.  It's true that Adventure games have chaned much over the years but a lot of it has not been for the better.  I think bringing back some of the old ways of making Ag's could spark new ideas in the game developers and even improve the new games comming out.  A lot of the new game need to be played using a walkthrouh because so many of the in game hints that keep the player on track are left out.  The Tex Murphy games were very careful not to confuse the player and cause him/her to go off track, get lost,  and start wondering how to advance the game and story.
Every time I play my Pandora Directive or Under a Killing Moon I notice more important things that help keep the player involved in the story that are left out of the new games.  I personaly don't feel that these little things should be lost.
You are right, Gabrial Knight had all these things as well.  I think we should all replay these old games again and studdy them closely. I think then we would agree that there is something here.
