It must have been the fan service that made it so enjoyable for me. I'm a big fan of H.P Lovecraft's work. His stories are creepy and sometimes even disturbing, but that man had a great imagination. Dark corners of the earth borrowed liberally from several of his works, so I often found myself thinking "Oh, so this is what this is, then that must be...". But i do suspect that the game requires a bit of know-how in order for one to fully enjoy it. Having read "The shadow over innsmouth" would be nearly mandatory.

I don't know if removing the copy protection will solve your problem, but the game refused to start for me until i removed the copy protection. On a side note: System shock 1 runs great in dosbox, for those who are interested, but it's really not the same type of game.

System Shock 2 has an XP installer at this site:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/system-shock-2-winxp2000-fix/downloads/system-shock-2-winxp2000-fix.

I have played this game with no problem.  Can't remember if I turned off hyperthreading or not.

Hope this helps someone.

Edit:  Just read my notes on this game -- this patch bypasses SafeDisc.  So no new info here.  Nevermind.  [smiley=sorry.gif]

Deleted UserThanks, Fnord and SharonB, for your info on System Shock 2. I'm going to try it out soon!

Re COC
COTE:  I have actually read "Shadow over Innsmouth" and a few other of Lovecraft's stories, but...  I think it was firstly the implied violence, torture and suffering, and then also the very well done graphics, that capture the creepy look of the inhabitants of Innsmouth so well, that got me too creeped out eventually.
You never get such a terrible sense of constant horror while just reading the stories.

So although I find myself drawn to and fascinated by Survival Horror, on the hand, on the other hand I'm also a bit of a wimp..  :-/

It's a gun with a torch wrapped together. And yes the graphics are superb (it's a game released in 2004).

There's of course a review of Obscure on JA, written by somebody who, from what I've heard, is a brilliant reviewer and downright awesome guy... [smiley=whistle.gif]

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Deleted UserYou know what, Taurnil, I'm actually glad to see you're making your shots smaller now, as with the big ones, it's a bit hard to see everything all at once.
Ok, personally, (as I'm currently using quite a small monitor), I'd probably want the darker shots just a teensy bit bigger, but I can see you are working on an optimal sizing there.
  8-)

Keep them coming!   8-)

Had a look at your review, Aya.  Nice!    [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Your review is nice and elucidatory by all means. The game is great because I recall these fond memories that we all had back there (school years etc) +the monsters that give a.... spicy look at the game. I only played it once, back in 2004 and for 20 minutes only cause the gameplay with only the keyboard was really hard to accomplish. I'm glad that I didn't get rid of it! I don't know about the sequels. Have you played them? I think they're called Aftermath and Obscure II. Give us some information if you played them!

Obscure 2 and Aftermath are the same game (following the stupidity of different continent-different title). Haven't played it yet but it's in my to play list (it's actually a candidate for next game after F.E.A.R.)

It's not too late to write a review on Obscure2 by the way!

Maybe it is, since I have stopped writing reviews...
Your last waking moments are marked by wretched pain as you provide dinner for a group of ill-mannered dinner guests that just wouldn't leave.

I did consider it, esp after finishing SH5, but I don't see it happening. I know, my fans are probably devastated!
