That's great Len. I enjoyed the first one a lot, so I believe your words for the second one.

I thought the first game was ok, but the protagonists were so unlikeable at times that I don't want to see them again unless they've changed.

With that said, unless they had a good advice and changed her voice, it will be really hard for me to try this one.

I thought the first game was ok, but the protagonists were so unlikeable at times that I don't want to see them again unless they've changed. Seems I may have lost one of my 5 senses. It's about 2 years since I played Tunguska and since then I've played many games and tested even more ! My memory isn't that good and I can't remember finding Nina's (in particular) voice acting at all annoying in Tunguska ! I think, but am not certain, that the same person is playing Nina with an entirely different story in Puritas Cordis.
Seems I’m in a minority and am pretty shocked to hear that some players and some reviewers found her voice disturbing let alone terrible.
MyPersonal objective prerequisites for a good voice actor/actress and Nina’s ratings are as follows :- *** Comprehensible --- Crystal clear ! *** Not abnormally fast --- Very good … especially for the many for whom English is not their first language. *** Not difficult to understand a ’queer’ regional accent --- AFAIK not being American, 'standard' USA-English *** Plenty of inflection in speech ... not monotone --- IMO plenty of voice expression.
After this, the Purely subjective impression kicks in ! I was perfectly happy with Nina’s voice/speech in both games and was both surprised and upset to learn that a number of people disliked it and some intensely ! But there’s no accounting for taste & opinion !
N.B. I remember extremely well in Gabriel Knight #2 ages ago --- one of my best games ever. There was one sentence which Gabe drawled and I couldn’t understand at all (my ‘mother tongue' is English... albeit UK-English). Since I thought it contained a hint or at least a leader, I rsaved reloaded and played it well over a dozen times and NEVER managed to understand it (no subtitles IIRC). I know some people loved his voice compared with another Gabe, and some hated it --- but this subjective “liking” or not is completely subordinate for me to my above concrete prerequisites !
I know that this isonly an opinion --- but I did not find that Nina’s voice spoilt my enjoyment of either of the 2 Secret Files games --- and I hope it won’t put off others for the new one !

lol Exactly! She was so dull... No emotions at all... Besides, she seemed like a 14 years old even more immature than Nancy Drew in my view. And that sure doesnt stay good in my voice "pre-requisites"

Even Indy hates snakes --- if you know Hebrew (or Yiddish) "Lehavdil".
Inesrocks --- I've forogotten what a 14 year old young lady sounds like. Even the youngest of my six granddaughters (in USA) is already 18½ and well behind the other five !

We grew up with cats, dogs, birds and various other pets. So I love / hate them all equally.
To me it just comes down to the individual animal. Some cats are really annoying and others are sweethearts. Same with dogs and even winged creatures.
For instance, we had several great blue macaws and mostly they were cool - except this one named Socrates who constantly squawked loudly at all hours of the day and night. He also flapped his wings violently when anyone tried to pet him and that sucker bit (hard). He was just a nasty character, but the others were very docile and generally quiet.
Cheers, Terry

I really liked the first game & am so pleased that the promised sequel is going to arrive & soon!
I find it sad that so called 'Adventure Game' fans can be so critical of a game based on on their dislike of a voice & their disapproval of the protagonist not liking cats??? - are you serious! [smiley=silly.gif] There isn't a post here that gives any really constructive reasons for not liking the game.

And it's not just because Nina doesn't like cats. Her basic problem is that she won't let anyone stand in her way, and if that means ruining things for them then so be it. She does not care. She heals an old person only because she thinks he could help her. She ruins an experiment. She makes a guy sick. She tortures a cat. She gets a soldier girl in trouble. And so on and so on. Half the time I was controlling her she would get other people in trouble and not care one single bit. That's borderline psychotic behavior.
And for the record, I didn't hate the game.

Status : Offline | I was writing in a goofy way but if you need a big torough review of the game so that you can grant me the right to dislike the game, here's the two main things that led me to such dislikeness:
1)The mains character voice 2)Both main characters personality
Seeing I actualy liked the story and pretty much loved the graphics, you may wonder how those two things listed above made me hate the game so much.
Well...let's try to picture this in a movie... if you're being told a story, even a good one, in a great setting, but if your main characters lack personality, being as white as a piece of paper, making you desperately desire for a more mature quote, and if one of them has a voice that makes you want to leave the cinema theatre, you'll end up having one of those popcorn blockbusters really beautiful to watch but not to think that eventually will be forgotten some years to come.
Now I understand why some of you may think I am being too harsh. The thing is, no game EVER made me feel this way regarding to its characters so... unless I was in a really bad mood when I was playing it, I think I have to right to not like this game.
If you want an even more complex review, please make sure to ask

As I said, my memory of Tunguska over 2 years ago is very hazy and I do not remember Nina commiting all those crimes. However if you say so, I believe you --- although as outlined in another thread here, many adventure games tend to encourage unethical behaviour !
But I DID enjoy that game and did not notice her anti-social behaviour !
Actually I don't think she's as bad as you paint her in Puritas Cordis, although I think that her voice is the same and sometimes rather weak wisecracks also.
When I say "think". We beta tested the English version of the game exactly a year ago and it was 95% complete ! I never understood why the game was not released until now and nobody mentioned this (to me anyhow !)) --- some commercial reason I guess. I think that the German version was released ages ago !!

| Deleted User | I must admit that I was put off by a lot of the puzzles in Tunguska - both for their "unethical/unkind" aspect, as well as for their convolutedness and implausibility. I felt bad regarding quite a few of Nina's and Max's victims - notably most for the accident he causes outside the pub (I felt it was pretty irresponsible, even if no-one got physically hurt); and I felt sorry for the poor man she caused to think he had won the lottery, and who ran off to resign his job, besides the other instances already mentioned by other posters. I don't know, many of the puzzles you had Max and Nina do, (or that they had you do : ), just seemed to have a callousness towards others in them.
I didn't really have that much of a problem with her voice being irritating, as having that having an American cheerleader voice for a German girl is a bit anti-immersive. I suppose a more European-sounding, more mature voice would probably have fitted in better, but that was not close to being a game-breaker for me.

I know, I know, 'It gives people ideas', but the kind of people who would do something like that for real are the kinds who end up in The Darwin Awards. Really, we can't trust responsible adults to understand the difference between fiction and reality?

And there are far worse games out there if you're worried about the effect on your kids & games that most of them would prefer over Adventure Games! There are also far worse cruelties portrayed in many films including cartoons for children!
I want to play games that are entertaining to an adult audience (my age!) - that's not to say I want to see abominable acts but if it's in the context of the story anything goes! Anyone that has a problem with Tunguska - please buy your future games from the children's section - hopefully you won't be offended then! [smiley=laughing.gif]
