So far it's ok, but I havn't played much of it. Only just got home and am now searching the graveyard.
It's very linear experience to date. The music and sound work are superb, but the game has a very samey feel to it (Silent Hill 1). Not much has changed since the days of Silent Hill.
However I would say it's more superficial and the story doesn't have the depth of the previous games so far. It might have something to do with the developer being American and a heavier focus on combat.
It's like the American remakes of J-horror films.

Thnks Lucien. I've never played a Silent Hill game before so I believe that playing Homecoming the first time will be 'a high level of alcohol in the blood'! As fas as being American you are right. The Japanese team has done a better work on the previous games although I didn't know it, I've just read it on an article. Hope the PC version has no many differentiations as the PS3.

IIRC, Aya has played this game and quite liked it. Whenever I finally upgrade my system, I'll definitely be playing this. Happy gaming.

The first 2 Silent Hill games are right up there with the best games ever created. The creepy atmosphere, the deep psychological stories that make you go WTF just happened, the tension when hiding from the gruesome monsters with only a pipe to defend yourself was scary.
So Silent Hill 5 has a lot to live up to. Sure 3,4 and Origins were a disappointment so could it reclaim it's Survival Horror crown.
Well.....no.
They have thrown out the gradual tension of exploring an eerie town and increased the emphasise on the combat....but I hear you cry the combat in Silent Hill games has always sucked. Well it still does, it's just waaay more important this time as you get mobbed by multiple enemies. Once you work out the best weapon and dodge strategy it eases up, but it's brutal at times in the early part of the game. Strangely towards the end the enemies become pish easy and can be killed with the knife even though you have all these weapons and health packs that were missing from the start. Seriously unbalanced.
There are still the odd puzzle in the game, but seeing as the game word is excruciatingly linear you shouldn't have any bother figuring them out. Very little backtracking involved.
So the story must be good to compensate you would think. You play Alex Shepard, home from the army to find his brother Joshua. When he arrives the town of Shepard Glen is all foggy and monsters start to attack him. So starts the chase through the various buildings of Shepard's Glen and ultimately Silent Hill to find out what happened to your brother. The story is about as deep as a teaspoon, you will have guessed the majority of it before the game hits half way. It does have some nice gruesome scenes towards the end, but by then I was bored.
This ain't Silent Hill , but a cheap American remake which borrows more from the dreadful movie than it does the game series. They really can't do J-Horror very well.
5/10

| Deleted User | Sorry to hear that SH5 wasn't your cup of tea Lucien. I'm still planning to play it when I can upgrade my system since it's one of my favorite series. I'm surprised you thought SH3 was a disappointment also, for me it was my favorite though SH2 wasn't far behind. I do have one question though, can you pick your difficulty level? Happy Gaming.

Of course he has taste! Anyway, I purchased the game today. Is it difficult to play with mouse+keyboard?

SH:H was great. certainly the style changed from the older games, and yeah, the action was buffed, but that was the case in RE4 too, another excellent game. SH:H kept all the aspects that made this series one of the best in the survival horror genre. And the story was second to none (well, maybe only to SH2's), not to mention the creepiness and the gore (you can't beat the scene with Pyramid Head in the church). Recommended 100%, and let those "It's made by Americans so it has to be crap" ppl rant away on their own...!
Btw, if you want to enjoy the action part of this game to its fullest and kick some major ass then play once and go for the UFO ending. After that you'll get the infinite laser gun! Now that's what I'm taking about!
You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

It was a dissapointment when compared to the superb 2nd game.

Status : Online | Well, stg strange happened during the game. I'm in Alex's house and I looked at a library in his room where a secret was hidden. Apparently I had to move some books to open a secret room but I didn't understand how to move the cursor. I tried some times but without success. I use keyboard+mouse. When I came back in the room and tried to move the books, after exploring the rest of the house, the choice 'examine' didn't exist anymore. Is it a bug or the game gives you limited options to explore some hotspots? In addition when I moved the cursor on the books a light appeared on them. I think it's rather strange. Any opinions?

I think it helps that I'm a generally pessimistic person when it comes to games. It's not hard for a game to be better than I expect it to be.

Repeat a couple of times until he's dead.
