Seriously, if you go here

http://www.sherlockholmes-thegame.com/

And enter the Forum for Sherlock Holmes v Jack The Ripper the first announcement is for Beta testers. There is a small 'application form' to fill out where they want to know your system specs, experience with AG's (particularly the previous Frogwares Holmes games) and any previous beta testing experience.

I have put my name down but sadly I don't expect to be chosen because of my 4 year old computer rig, even though it has run all the other frogwares games perfectly in the past  :'(

Deleted UserThanks Steve. Never beta-tested before, but as I had loved the other Frogwares games, I thought I'd apply too...   :-[

..so I did!

As long as it exceeds minimum requirements it won't count against you. They need testers with a variety of systems.

I won't be signing up for testing, afraid it will diminish the playing experience. For some reason I thought the game was set for a March release. With Beta testing just getting underway, that seems unlikely. On checking the HvJ page on JA the release date is now May, if it ever were March. At least this gives me plenty of time to play Nemesis before I get my hands on HvJ.

I signed up as well. I did some beta testing on the remastered version of The Awakened and I would love to do some more testing for Frogwares.

I've never been a beta-tester myself too but I agree with An_Inkling that it will diminish the playing experience. Plus the lack of experience in beta testing is a little bit discouraging for me to tell you the truth.

Its really just the engineering concept of 'testing to destruction' but applied to software. They give you a 'script' to follow and you let them know where any problems occur, pretty straightforward really..

You're very right, and even a considerable understatement.
As I wrote elsewhere here :-

~~ Len ~~ ... When the game is released the BT always receives a free copy.
But I myself have never played this gift since I already know the game inside out and the last thing I want is to go over it all again !

Perhaps I misunderstood you about the beta tester receiving a ‘script’ from the developer(s).

If you mean any sort of hint sheet or major or minor walkthrough, that is definitely not the case.

I have beta tested very many games and, apart from once IIRC, the Developers want you to start from scratch as does the player --- (unless he is one of those folk who prints out a walkthrough before starting the game) !

Apart from bugs etc. the Developers want to see how difficult or easy the puzzles are, whether they are relevant whether the game play is logical, etc. etc.
And incidentally, from considerable experience,  most of the bugs and particularly dead-ends are in areas off the beaten track where the programmers assume the player will NOT go --- but frequently DOES !!
Any form of prompting would obviate this vitally important aspect of testing (apart from personal Hints from the Developers when the tester is stuck... which gives them a confirmation checkon the probable tough parts !) !!

Later :
Its really just the engineering concept of 'testing to destruction' but applied to software.

I don't know what that means actually ... I did study physics but not engineering.
Not knowing the concept '(just) testing to destruction', it sounds to me that the extremely ramified aspects of computer game testing are far from the above engineering definition !

Not me Len, although I'm sure they were inundated with responses so I'm not surprised..

I'm also pretty sure that they were inundated. They chose 30 from around the world.

GameBoomers just posted that the game is now on preorder at InteractCD.
I'm sure they are right... in the past they have had at least one Mod and probably some members beta testing.

I have no knowledge whatsoever about who beta tested The Ripper this time round since each tester worked completely independently and was requested not  to contact any others or 'cooperate' since no hints or walkthrough were given.

Deleted UserFollowing the thread started above referrinjg to GameBoomers :-

Somebody just posted that Sherlock Holmes V Jack the Ripper has both 3rd person & 1st person modes.

Indeed it does and should suit the many players who don't likr the one mode or the other.
Furthermore, you can switch from one mode to the other (and back if required)anywhere in the game byb simply clicking a button and without affecting anything else at all  [smiley=angel_smiley.gif]!

Deleted UserAFAIK --- only one other beta-tester from JA+.

Deleted UserBeta testing finished a short while ago, and I was informed thst the "master" version was completed 2 days ago.

If, as I imagine, the "master version" is what is often referred to as "gone gold", I would guess that the game will quite likely be released pretty early in May (2009)
