I just started Mass Effect a couple of days ago  :-[ Add another one to the list. And knock my school grades down a notch too, most likely. I think I'm suffering from senioritis! I've played about 15 hours so far, and I'm loving it. It kind of seems like an upgraded KOTOR clone so far though, did anyone else get this impression? Not that I'm complaining! I loved KOTOR
I love the FPS combat, so I think I'm digging this even more than KOTOR. One thing I'm disappointed about though is that there is no option to have another person control one of your squad members (I'm playing on console). I've played a few RPG's that have this feature and it's definitely welcome. I feel bad for my boyfriend who sits next to me and stares longingly at the screen

Are you sure you're doing your job properly, Arkadia?  I'd have thought with your looks he'd want to stare at something else.

Let him play something else on another platform...  -one of the games you had already started - let him progress it a bit for you...   [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]

Awww...
Looks like another case where PC has to wait for the console versions for marketing puposes?  Anyway, I'm actually glad it's only coming next year - it will give me more breathing space for all the other games I'm trying to finish and for Risen and Dragon Age (and let's hope for Divine Divinity 2).

Thanks for the info, jedicri

After 4 and a half years, the novelty appears to wear off   :

Trav, if he's not playing with me he's most likely playing a game of his own (usually an MMORPG I don't have the time for). I wish I could set him on some of my older games to finish them, but he likes to start his own

It's an improvement on the first game.

Mass Effect was developed specifically for the Xbo 360 and only ported to the PC's about 6 months later.

Dragon Age on the other hand was supposed to be a PC exclusive, but has been delayed when they decided to make console versions.

The two add ons to Mass Effect (they promised constantly expanding universe thru add ons, but that has not happened) are Bring Down the Sky, and Pinnacle Station. BDTS is pretty good, a new world and things to do, PS is not worth the time. I wont spoil it for anyone who does not have it, but it is very limited and does not involve much new to explore at all.  I hope they can improve on this tho with a new title in the pipeline i suspect that ME 1 will be pretty much what is in the box. That is pretty amazing in many ways but it was sad they did not follow thru with more add ons.  it was a good idea.

You get the add ons by starting up the game and following the prompts for adding new content.

Oh, yes, you are quite right, where is my mind these days?    [smiley=doh.gif]  I still remember being cross that ME and Assassin's Creed was for console only, and then I ended up not even liking Assasin's Creed.

Thanks for the info on the add-ons Chris!

I absolutely loved this game.  My least favorite thing about it (the atrocious inventory system) is being fixed in the sequel.

I thought the game has enormous elegance, which is a quality I value highly and which can be rare in games.

Fantastic story, beautiful environments.

The water on the final planet was some of the most beautiful "game water" I've ever seen.

I would also nominate Shepard as perhaps the most attractive game avatar EVAR.

Did you guys catch the ridiculous faux controversy that got stirred up about this game on Fox News?  It was a scream.  The claim was that the game was pornography (because of the possibility that Shepard goes to be with someone).

They had a bunch of talking heads who knew nothing about games and one actually said somethign like, "No, no, no, mixing Luke Skywalker with Debbie Does Dallas is a very bad idea."  HUH?

I played the game on the XBOX 360 and I can't wait for the sequel.

Remember, procrastinate now.  Don't put it off!!

I don't (my internet at work is awful) but I'll try to find one at home.

The happy ending to the story about the Fox mess was that, reportedly, HUNDREDS of angry gamers posted terrible reviews of the Fox host's current book on Amazon within hours of the piece airing!

Just finished Mass Effect and I Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Loved it!

Great presentation, pacing, voice acting, graphics, set pieces, action, weapons, etc, etc, etc...  Overall, just extremely well done.

I do agree with Arkadia that it had a feel of KOTOR in it, which, as she said also, is a good thing.  I would have liked a bit more interaction with the environs though...

My only neg to ME was the sound - I encountered so many sound issues during the entire play through, had it not been such an utterly outstanding game, I might have quit and thrown it out.    Apparently support for the soundboard I am using was wonky out the gate, and never truly acknowledged or patched by Bioware/Demiurge... stutters, freezes, missed dialogue, hitching, static-y background sounds, etc.  They were all there, consistently, but again the game was so good I was able to put up with it...

Yes, hardware accell. was turned off, drivers up to date, and software sound enabled in the game, in case it might be asked

I'm keeping my Saves to port into ME2, which I am now anxiously awaiting.

To all ME fans, I recommend the books as well.  I read ME: Revelation before I played the game, and now am going to read ME: Ascension, since I believe it's a bridge story to ME2... great, short, easy, entertaining read.

Playing: Skyrim: Dragonborn/Dawnguard; Torchlight 2; To The Moon; Far Cry 3

Finished: HomeFront; Far Cry 3; Dishonored

Always Playing: Half Life 2

Looking Forward To: BioShock: Infinite

Reading: BioShock: Rapture; SW: Revan

Yup, I found that one out myself, after phoning and then e-mailing their support dept. with my crashing problems.

At first I couldn't believe that it was the sound aspect that was causing the crashes, but  turning the sound hardware acceleration off and setting sound  on software mode, put a stop to my crashes... -which made me wonder why I had bothered buying myself a good sound card in the first place...

Not sure whether I wanted to start a new topic but since Mass Effect 2 had already been mentioned here on prior posts, I'll  just simply dig this topic up to remind those who are picking up either the PC or 360 versions of ME2,  the release date in North America is on January 26 (unsure of release date in Europe unfortunately).

More info may be found here:

Just an FYI,
Most motherboards have very good on-board sound I find.

I can't wait for ME2. Although I still don't know how we will keep our characters/story from the first game... I think the last save game was before the last scene where we had to make some choices about the ambassador and whatever? I don't remember well...

Playing: Skyrim (ongoing)

Last Finished: can't recall, been too long.

Heh, well, if you really want to know, I was kinda forced to get  a soundcard in that case, though I usually do, especially for my system that runs nice speakers.

In this specific case when I was doing my last upgrade, (I always build my own PC's) I decided to try out an Asus mobo, since I'd gone with Intel and Gigabyte before, and though Intel is my fave, I couldn't find a nice one at the time.

I found a nice fast-ish Asus, and started putting everything together, but when it became time to install the drivers, a driver for the stupid Asus onboard sound could not be found anywhere, and my sound wasn't working.  So a sound card was kind of a "must" to solve that little problem, and I thought I'd just as well get quite a good one.

Anyway, thanks for the reminder about ME2.  I had for some reason thought it was only coming out closer to May/June, and had quite a shock the other day when I checked and saw that it's so close to release.

...which is just as well, since Venetica has been postponed, and neither Diablo 2 nor Arcania have been making promising sounds.

I wonder if Alpha Protocol will come on schedule.

I just bought Mass Effect 1 and it just won't launch.  I get the start-up screen with the choices, but every module refuses to launch and I get an error.  I've turned off and on everything, got the patch, changed vid drivers...all the stuff EA told me to do and more.  It must be my vid card somehow, but I'm not changing it. Every other game runs fine.

I think I'll just re-sell the game and get ME2.  Think the Steam version is any different or more compatible?  Probably not.
