Status : Offline | Well, I've finally reached Schattenjaeger status, and I think there's a confession I have to make. It's a dark little secret, and now that I've become a Schattenjaeger, I can't hide it any longer.
I haven't played the Gabriel Knight games.
Not any. Not Sins of the Fathers, not The Beast Within, not Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Dam ned, none, zippo, zilch, nary a one.
Is it because I don't have them? Well, I'm embarassed to say the the first two games are sitting in my closet in the form of the Gabriel Knight Mysteries. The third game can easily be picked up online for about ten bucks, so that's not a problem.
Is it because they don't look interesting? No, I'd say all the reviews I've read, and all of the opinions I've seen expressed here indicate they're some of the best graphical adventures every made.
So, what could it be? I think somewhere deep down inside my subconscious is telling me to save them, to treasure them, to only open them in case of an emergency, so to speak. There are many good adventure games. There aren't many truly great games, and there's nothing like the feeling of digging into an adventure that you know is going to keep you enthralled for days or weeks or even months of fun.
I'll compare it to reading Tolkien. I wish I could read Lord of the Rings again for the first time. Likewise, once you've played a great game, there's no way of getting that first feeling back. Grim Fandango, Obsidian, and yes, for me, even Myst have all been that way for me.
Some day, I'll be in an adventure gaming funk after playing a stinker like Mystery of the Nautilus, and I'll need something to restore my faith in adventures. At least that's my theory.
Well, I feel lot better now that I've got all that off my chest. I now return you to your regularly scheduled anarchy. And I really should be playing Obsidian, anyway!

The Schattenjaeger Clan is not going to take this lightly, one of our own and never even played any of the games.
Well, if you hear wolves howling some dark, stormy night, I would run to the closet and load one of them as quickly as possible before the Curse of the Schattenjaegers Who Haven't Played The Game is placed upon you.

The other day when I was compiling the difficulty list, I came up with slightly over hundred adventures that I played. I know there are a few more that I forgot plus several foreign language adventures that hardly anyone knows.
But the point is that there are still lots of well known and good adventures that I never played. Obsidian, Bad Mojo, Sanitarium, Duckman, Bad Day on the Midway to name a few. I do not feel like I'm running out of adventure games to play. So go play GK now
I forgot my sig.

Wish I could play them as new and fresh again though.

Off course you haven't, silly.
You weren't even a Schättenjaeger.
So now that you are, I advise you to start with GK1.
As you can see I haven't played them also, but I'm counting the posts, I'm counting the posts.

the reason i am posting to this thread is because i really liked (and agreed) what you said about Tolkien!!!
Yeah you are right ....... i would give everything to read lord of the rings again without knowing what will happen next!!!
The feeling you have when you read Tolkien is undescribeble........simply the best author *aaahh* now i am moved :'( :'( :'( :'(
Resistance is not futile, we're gonna win this thing, humankind is too good, we're not a bunch of under-achievers! We're gonna stand up, and we're gonna be human beings. We're going to get fired up about the real things, the things that matter! Creativity, and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit.

However, I understand why you haven't played them. I haven't played any of the Tex Murphy games, and I have Overseer in my drawer and Martain Memorandum on my HD. No UAKM though... waiting for that to show up on the used games rack at the local EB. I take comfort in knowing that I have some grade-A material just waiting for me to dive into. I'd just rather play some second-tier abandonware and save classics for a time when I don't have to worry that distractions in life (such as school work) will force me to put it down for a while.

Status : Online | This is really sad and I'm quite embarrassed to admit it but I love the Gabriel Knight series so much that I actually have the background themes that came with the GK Mysteries Limited Edition installed on my computer!
Whenever I shut down for the night I hear wolves howling in the distance, when I empty the recycle bin I hear them growling behind me, and with other operations I am treated to the dulcet tones of Dean Erickson saying something like " I think I'm going to have to analyse that"
Ok, it is sad, but what can you do? Without a GK4 to play I have to make up for it somehow!

You have the GK Mysteries and you're not playing them... ???  on't you ever feel your (gamer) life is lacking of smth, and you just can't find out what that smth is? Well, I'll tell you Andromus, you seem a nice person...I experienced the same emptiness -in my game life- before playing GK saga... So, don't do this to yourself! (You could play at least one of them...just to know how it feels )

Nope, I'm doing a dual boot with Windows ME and Windows 98SE. I will most certainly get rid of Windows ME in time, but Windows 98 is staying with me, safe and sound. I intend to be running old games for a very, very long time.

Oh, that's what I'd tell myself at first, that I can start with one game, and I can stop anytime I want. But before I know it, I'd chain-play all three games back to back, and end up as another one in of the legions of GK junkies crying out for a GK 4....which, come to think of it sounds like fun!
