I would guess the Syberia games are likely to be acceptable. Any of the Agatha Christe games are also a good bet.

I only played one Agatha Christie game, and I must admit I found it rather boring... 'Murder on the Orient Express'. I'll try to think of some more games for your ladyfriend, Bob. Good luck with all that!

| Deleted User | I'll admit to never having played a Nancy Drew game, but I have heard from many sources that: 'Curse of Blackmoor Manor' is one of the best ones.
Unfortunately, the Agatha Christie games didn't work all that well for me personally, for various reasons. I did enjoy Sherlock Holmes, though, and I would recommend either Sherlock Holmes and the Silver Earring or Sherlock H. vs Arsene Lupin.
Otherwise, I would also recommend any of the first four CSI games, as a stepping stone from Nancy Drew, -not games generally highly recommended by hardcore adventure gamers, but games which I personally enjoyed very much for the stories.
Syberia is always a good suggestion, especially for a young lady. Do you have any idea if she plays anything with a bit of action in it? If so, she might enjoy The Longest Journey as well. The latter two are not mystery games, of course, just nice ones to start with in general.

Status : Online | I've played a couple of these games as they are great on low spec computers, which I had until a few months ago.
I concur with The Traveler over the Curse of Blackmoor Manor. This was a great game and quite lengthy. I needed a walkthrough at times as it was very tricky in places.
I also liked The Secret of the Scarlet Hand as I am keen on history and ancient civilisations.
Other games I played and gave up on or didn't like for a variety of reasons were Danger by Design, The Creature of Kapu Cave and The Secret of Shadow Ranch. The main reason why I didn't like these games was due to some mindnumbing tasks like cooking and sorting frass etc. These tasks for me are not puzzles, but tedious chores.

Now that I have written that down, it looks quite chauvinistic, actually - delegating the women to the cooking and cleaning. I have no idea what goes on in the ND games, as I have personally never felt drawn to them.
Thank you very much for all your useful input, everyone - I shall start my shopping excursion today. I had forgotten about Syberia. I should actually have a copy lying around somewhere. Of course I shall buy the lady a brand-new one. (After making sure she doesn't have it already.)
@Traveler: regarding the CSI games. I had actually been interested in these myself, as I do enjoy the TV show. They did seem to enjoy negative reviews, unfortunately. I think I might get one just to try it out. Any specific one to recommend? Is CSI Miami very different/as good as the others?

| Deleted User | MystiBob, if you were planning on buying just a single CSI game, why don't you go for the trilogy pack, that has the first two CSI games and the Miami game in it? It is selling as a Ubisoft Exclusive, and is probably less than the price of a single game. It is incredibly good value for money. I have that trilogy pack, and I loved every single game on it.
The Miami one has got quite a different atmosphere, but the stories are just as good.
Warning: Do not get the upcoming CSI New York. Apparently it is a casual game and quite different from the first lot of titles in the series.

This game provided a most surprising inadvertent comedy moment. Nance eats (in a pretty greedy way, I must add) a plate of food. Then announces "I'm stuffed!". At that point my wife and I looked at each other and burst out laughing. There is clearly some US parlance which is not common to the UK!

I will probably finish it someday; -but I just wanted to mention to you, that I really did not like her voice - it sounded too hoarse and mature for a young girl. I was wondering if she has the same voice throughout all the games?
From the posts in this thread, The Secret of the Scarlet Hand, sounds as if it might also be interesting?

It is the same voice actress in ALL the games (Lisa Minelli). I've got used to her dulcet tones. "It's stuck!"

Gee! Lisa Minelli, eh? Well, I suppose knowing it is her, could make it a bit more bearable, than just having a faceless idea in your head. I read a few Nancy Drew books as a child, and I imagined her very differently, though.

It's not THE Lisa Minelli (daughter of Judy Garland, star of "Cabaret". Just a namesake.
After playing a couple of the ND games, we read a ND novel. The games are much better.
Should have said that ND is a young lady (drives car, visits other countries etc.......). From that point of view the voice is more acceptable, perhaps.

Nah- still don't like the voice. But.. [smiley=laughing.gif] I must admit I was very taken aback that the Lisa Minelli would lend her voice to a PC game character. The Lisa Minelli must be pretty old, if she is still alive, in any case.
EDIT: Ok, I just checked. Not all that old, apparently, - but in her 60's, which isn't all that young either. She was born 1946.

Well, she has certainly been one busy lady in the gaming industry....

I would agree as well, these are my favorites as well. These were made when they had better stories and not as many chores and mini games to make up for there short stories. I would add Serect of Shadow Ranch to the list as well. I have played them all except the last two. White Wolf had a good story but I thought there were too many chores. Thrain to Blue Moon Canyon was ok too. There has been many games I felt were better but I still buy all of them.
