Topic: About Syberia...

    Page 1

11 OCT 2002 at 11:54pm
Deleted User   I know I'm probably going to get lynched for even suggesting this, but, well, am I the Only one who honestly thinks Syberia was not as great a game as it should have been?
Don't get me wrong, it's a great game in most respects, but I honestly thought it lacking in some of the area that really "Make" a game.  Most of the puzzles seemed unbelievably simple at times... the "church bell chimes" for instance I hadn't even realized were a puzzle untill I had solved it.
Valadilene also felt poorly explored for the most part, only really three buildings to enter off the street, and yet every door was a hotspot just for Kate (Cate?) to say "No need to go down there," and four empty screens of forest to muddle through just to get through it.
The Ending too felt somewhat cheap and tacked on.  The train... oh, hold on
<SPOILER FOLLOWS.  PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE EITHER ONE OF THE TWO FORUM MEMBERS WHO HAVE NOT PLAYED THROUGH THE GAME YET>
Right, so, the Train pulling out from the station and Kate Jumping on at the last minute just seemed to have little if anything to do with the actual game.  It is only "led up" to by the breaking off of her engagement, which itself Also has nothing to do with the actual game.
<SPOILER OVER, YOU CAN SAFELY RESUME READING NOW>
Also, although it probably just goes to show what a Dolt I really am, I still dont understand the distinction between SIberia and SYberia, as they are both spelled different ways in the game subtitles.  There is the Lecture, but that really doesn't clear up much, and furthermore, it didn't seem to advance the story either, seeing as after leaving Barrockstadt the game's objective seems to change from "Find Hans" to "Find Opera Lady."
Anyway, that's just my useless opinion.  Any thoughts?

I really don`t agree with you (I`m not lynching )

for me the game was about seeing Kate change while visiting interesting locations.
after barrockstad I was more interested in finding out what kate would do in the end than where hans was. I don`t know if that was intentional, but I it just made me love the game even more..

I don`t think the hunt for the "opera lady" was a "distraction" it led to finding hans didn`t it?

about SIberia and SYberia..
from what I understood. SYberia is a legendary island(that nobody in recent time has found) in SIberia somewhere. where there are still supposed to be living mamoths..

my 2 cents

I have recently finished Syberia and I thought it was a good game, but maybe not great. It sure was beautiful but it was a bit too easy and I would have wanted to actually see Syberia and maybe talk to Hans Voralberg a bit more.
I think that the hours I spent on it were well spent hours, but I would never dream on comparing it to TLJ as some have (although I belive I just did ) :

I agree that there seemed to be too many screens that were there just for decaration. (of course, I think that TLJ had too many long scenes that were just talking)

I found the game rather easy, but still very good.  I didn't think that there was a shift in focus after Barrockstadt.  In Valadilene, the aim was to get the train moving, in Barrockstadt it was to move the train out of the station, and then it was to find the Opera lady.

Each of these was a step in the journey to find Hans.

I think that the ending was a bit of a shift, although I fully expected it to happen as it did.  My first thought after Kate's (almost typed April
) first conversation with Dan was that Dan would get dumped before the end of the game.

Syberia was a good game, although not as good as TLJ (which had problems of it's own that I won't get into at the moment)

I enjoyed Syberia, but think it was really hyped up, the
Graphics were beautiful but the puzzles were a bit easy,
personally I REALLY liked the ending, it really surprised me, I myself, immediately compared this game to TLJ, I think they are very much alike, and felt the same about both games, they were both very hyped up,  still worth playing. but I wouldnt play them again.

Hi Magma42,
You are not alone.  I was bored with most of it. Found it very slow.  I was very glad when I finished it.  Many people liked it.  Really wished that I was one of them, but I was not.

Deleted UserYou guys are lucky you got through to see the ending.  I get to the part where Kate gives Oscar his new legs and the game dumps me to the desktop!  No problem with the rest of it, but without Oscar, I can't go any further.

Hi,

I never finished the game.  At the mines where you wind up the train using the giant robot she climbs down after the windup and the cursor is gone.  At the Syberia site there are at least 89 people pleading for help at that spot among others.

I emailed Microids three times and on the third time (about a month ago) they replied to keep looking at the site for the patch.

Well, there still is no patch and so I took the game off.

Now, game play.  For me the game is boring.  The music is wonderful, the robots are wonderful, the graphics are okay, the story idea is great and to tell the truth,  I would start getting sleepy playing the game.

I didn't have this problem with TLJ but then that game moves well.

I think but not sure that Microids is doing Post Mortem which I really want to play but am hesitant about dumbing money into a game that may not be tecnically finished.

So Magma you are not alone.

This is the BEST adventure game I've ever played. I've played over 100. TLJ comes close. So does GK and LSL.

The ending of the game was a surprise and inspirational. Absoultely outstanding!

Benoit Sokol has produced a true classic.

Please play this game. If you agree, please email MICROIDS and ask for a sequel. Email everyone you know. We need more quality games like Syberia.

In the meantime, please email Sierra, Lucasarts, , and any other adventure game producer or developer you know. Let them know you're tired of shooters, violence,
hackem, slashem, blood and gore. ENOUGH ALREADY!

Just visiting JA and other pure adventure sites will also help. The higher the "hit count" the more credibility adventure gaming will have.

Deleted UserJust to clarify something...

I'm not saying it's a Bad ending necessarily, but it didn't really seem to have fit with the rest of the Game's story, by which I mean plot points that were advanced by character action.  Sure, the sensibility behind, wait...
[ANOTHER SPOILER WARNING BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING SECTION OF MY POSTING CONCERNS A SUBSTANTIVE DESCRIPTION OF THE ENDGAME STORY SEQUENCES AND ALL OTHER PERTAINENT PREVIOUS PLOT POINTS, SO BE FOREWARNED BEFORE READING FURTHER THAT THE STORY MAY BE RUINED IF YOU CHOOSE TO READ THE FOLLOWING.  CONSIDER YOURSELF DULY WARNED]
The sensibility behind Kate's choosing to travel and Adventure and experience the world as a testament to the independent, powerful and wise figure of womanhood she has become during the coarse of the game, but many of these events are beyond her control, and have nothing to do with the advancement of the Game per se.
an's infidelity for instance did nothing to further the game's story, though it did, as stated, contribute to Kate making her decision to leave.  Matter of fact, Dan and, oh... wait... it'll come to me... that chick he cheated with... ah forget it, but the both of them stay in contact with Kate, but neither actually contribute to the progression of the game.  Why even put their numbers on the speed-dial since you never have to call either of them?
Worse than this I believe is all the Build up to explore this marvelous mammoth-laden country/island of Syberia, and you Never get there, never get to see the Mammoths, Never chat with all the tribe-folk who watch over them, never even get to meet Hans, who has dreamt of these majestic creatures since childhood, untill the game is effectivley over, and he's barely got anything to say at all.  Hearing the tales, seeing the cave-drawings, listening to the proffessor's 17-minute lecture, and for what?  Just to be left with only imagining the beautiful country that so many have tried to reach?
Incidentally, what was the point of the clockwork mammoth you recieved at the end?  You dont see it run, you can't use it, and it doesnt even get mentioned during the remaining five minutes of game.
[SPOILER OVER]
By no extent did I mean to suggest that this wasn't a great game to play, but given that it has such a fascinating environment to set the game in, interesting characters to explore, and a great premise to build the game's puzzles within (there really isn't enough clockwork in today's games I feel, but then again I haven't been able to find Watchmaker), I'm saying that the game really sets you up for so much, and just leaves you there.

Syberia is by far the greatest Adventure game i have ever played, atleast when we talk about the Grafics and the music.
But i agree, it was way to easy to complete.  But it gives a hint of great thing to come!
Maby this will convince Lucas Arts to drop there "new" Concept that they used in Monkey Island 4! Mouse controlled Adventure will always mean somthind special to me, i simply abandoned MI4. A shame really!
(Or "Escape from Monkey Island "

But this shows that there are companys who still want to give us games that are beutiful and easy to controll. Really who want to spend all that time just to get the caracter into position to interact whit it's enviroment?
A well, I can't wait for Syberia 2. I just have to know what happens up there in the far north! Don't you?

I just finished playing Syberia and was quite disapointed. I agree with the points Magma42 brought up with regards to the ending of the game. I was shocked when the game ended and SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT you didn't actually go to Syberia. It's ridiculous to build up this mystery about a tribe of people and their pet mammoths and not resolve it in the climax. SPOILER OVER

The game felt too contrived. The various tasks that you had to complete just felt like they were there to take up time. SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT Why would Kate Walker go to Aralbad to get the opera singer to appease the factory owner when she already had the screw driver to disconnect Oscar's hands from the organ playing automoton? SPOILER OVER

The phone conversations, ostensibly used for character develpment were stunted and unrealistic.

Ultimately I think this game had a pleasing visual aesthetic but poor character develpment, plot and puzzles.

AMEN!

(SPOILERS AHEAD!)

I began to lose interest when Kate didn't have the strength to lift her suitcase.  My interest continued to wane when it become obvious that the only reason Kate was no longer able to lift her suitcase was because this was the game's way (this would be the contrivance part) of getting her to ask for help from the hotelier.  She was, in effect, trapped in the lobby by her suitcase.  Say what?

Later, she is again trapped in the lobby (more contrivance) by rain if she fails to call about a fax and ask the hotelier if the fax has arrived.
Wonder if the Weather Channel is aware of this?)

And why, other than the fact that a game is being played, would she pick up the gears left by Momo?

Ridiculous, uncompelling and a bore.

In the middle of playing this one, so I didn't read the spoilers...

It is by far one of the most beautiful and graphically detailed games I've ever played. Yeah, the puzzles are rather simple and some of them are "Ok...so what?". But the graphics are engrossing enough for me to hold my interest. And I haven't seen an adventure game yet that didn't have one or two illogical points (stupid actions/reactions from the main character...or no reaction at all to a surprising situation, etc.).

****SPOILER AHEAD!!!!*****

For example: Kate going into the rectory office...the priest isn't there, but she didn't inquire anyway, right? So what's a girl to do? Why...she finds a secret key and rifles through the priest's chest of drawers.....yeah....right. I would have liked to have a cut scene there where a priest comes in and catches her in the act.....
Where was the natural lead-in that would justify her actions here? Either it's not there or I missed it somewhere....

Nevertheless, I'm enjoying it. It's a keeper I think.

i didn't read all the above posts but i did read a few and here's my opinion... i think the game was excellent but it was VEEEERY easy... probably the reason i didn't get bored like some of you did is because i kept advancing only to get stuck a little at the coctail puzzle (i'd love to have that "thing" in my house
)... the atmosphere and the storyline of the game were 2nd to none imo and i very much liked the way Kate's character changed (evolved?) throughout the game... as for the ending, personally i found it as one of the best and most emotional adv endings i ever seen... and i've seen a lot (still TLJ's is the best for me... i still have to get over it!)

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

I feel like taking drugs so that I will fall into a narcosis or sth and wake up in october when the second one is going to be out...

I just finished the first one you see, and I was looking over and over again in the box just to doublecheck I didn't miss a 3rd cd or something :-)For me it is one of the best adventures ever made. The characters were all memorable. The automatons....u could only like these machines. And the complexity of the story climaxing more and more to the end was also fascinating. It's 12 months till next october :-(

But the truth is it could be even better. I hope that the second one will be longer (I also think that TLJ had a perfect length) but not with harder puzzles. I think what they did is splitting a whole game in 2 (or maybe 3). It's like if Longest Journey was made in 2 parts and the first one stopped in the second cd.

Maybe a few more inventory items (I don't recall having more than 5-6 items at the same time in any part of the game). Also as stated before I would like more feedback from Kate on the world, more hotspots and a better dialogue system that is always updated with the events of the game.

Graphics, music, story-telling and puzzle difficulty can and should remain the same. Interface needs some ammendments and bigger length. I don't think I played the game more than 5-6 times and each time was not more than 2 hours. Nevertheless, an adventure to stay in history as one of the best... Congratulations to Benoit Sokal and his team...

I loved Syberia, it's one of my favorite games.  However, I am so glad to see honest comments on the game.  We can't all like the same game!

As for the puzzles being too easy, for a "puzzle impaired" adventure gamer such as myself, the puzzles were fine.  I could see why some of you smart puzzle solvers would find it too easy.

Heytos,

Syberia...I remember when my roommate and I where watching the first trailer for the game...He likes adventures, and I love them...He never finished a game without cheating, except one until recently, and always threw away game boxes...I hate cheating and cherish the boxes...ANYWAY, we were watching the first trailer and both loved what we saw.  Then I asked him, "I wonder where it takes place?"  He said he didn't know either.  Finally, we called each other dumbasses and realized where.

OKay that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about, just that it's about Syberia and I thought it was funny.  Syberia...it was fun.  I think it was more of an introduction or a prelude (like Fellowship of the Ring) to a grande story.  The most things I love about Adventures are the backgrounds, puzzles, imagination, story, and something else that I can't remember.  The backgrounds where awesome.  The best I've seen, definitely.  Yes, there were a lot of extra scenes, but I love to look at the scenery.

The game is pretty slow.  I realized that from the beginning.  Then I started to think about what was actually happening in the story.  Not much.  Then I started thinking...hmmm, is this story going to change?  I predicted that it wouldn't and then thought of a reason.  What I thought of was that the story was actually trying to focus on something else.  I finally determined that it was actually about Kate and her cell phone conversations.  Anyway I'm tired and don't know where I'm going with this so that I'll insert a happy face
.   I was kind of suprised by the ending and not.  I kind of liked an I didn't.  I kind of cried and I didn't cry at all.  And then I realized that the story had just begun.  Just like the Fellowship of the Ring.  Exact same ending.

Okay, class tomorrow, projects due,
We get to talk about Petri Nets and A* search algorithms...yeaaaaa

I just plain loved this game. It's wonderful like TLJ. Honestly, if the game crashes on you, try a patch, then download a saved game file that will get you past the crash point.

Go to Mr. Bill's from my Syberia Fan club and download a save game (or several).

Feel free to join my Syberia fan club:

Greetings,

To tell you the truth  I really did loved Syberia. I've played both Syberia and TLJ and found them extremely alike in some aspects... Syberia has two "small" problems, it's very unexplored and the puzzles are somehow easy to solve. I think if the areas we're more explored, if the game had more places to visit and see, more people to talk to and stuff like that and if the puzzles we're more difficult Syberia would be better. But hey.... I really loved it, all the places, the graphics (loved the 3D birds), very well chosen music and enviroment sound, nice gameplay and easy and well organized inventory, the cellular idea (I loved this, very well thought
) and the ending was not THAT bad, I kinda liked it, it made me acctually want to meet Hans Voralberg... all this made me love this game. Syberia and TLJ are, for me, the two best adventure/point'n'click games ever made. But TLJ story still is unbeatable... damn I loved that game too. Nice graphics, awsome sounds and music...
I'm expecting this two sequels, haven't heard about TLJ2 (saddly, the game is a real masterpiece... that story knocks me down!! any news about TLJ sequel is welcome
) and Syberia 2 is coming out in Fall of 2003
