Status : Offline | Thanks for the link. Having trouble with that too. It gets to the part where it is supposed to initialize the components and fails. Says to check internet connection or try again later.
Nothing wrong with my internet connection, so I'm hoping that waiting a while will make it work.
Looking forward to playing the demo. Thanks again!
Edit: It's no use. I can't get the runtime to download the components. I tried thru both IE7 and Firefox.
Any ideas?

Status : Offline | Thank you for all your help, InlandAZ. I did as you suggested and I know it updated because I did a dxdiag and it showed 18 new files in there dated today.
I had rebooted so I tried the demo again. No luck. It's a real shame because I'm not buying this game if I can't get the demo to work.
I didn't like the idea of downloading a full game anyway. I like to have the cd and the box.
I guess I'll have to wait for Still Life 2 for my next new game.
Thank you again for trying.

| Deleted User | Nice to see it confirmed that I wasn't the only one having a problem with the Direct X Nov. file. I just downloaded and started playing the demo using the Direct X Redist Aug2008 version instead. You can find it at: distributable-august-2008.html" target="_blank">http://www.esoft.web.id/programming/free-download-directx-9-0c-re distributable-august-2008.html and I know it's also on the official Microsoft site somewhere but I don't have the link handy. Remember to un-install whatever version you have first.
Enjoy!

How did you do it?

I fixed that by downloading this program:
Win2000 Launcher 1.5.2.

Status : Offline | Thanks Ripper. I tried that, but it didn't work. I did enjoy watching the demo videos though.
I'm giving up on this game till I get my new Vista System in about a year.

| Deleted User | Sharon, sorry to hear that you've probably given up. You're right about the uninstall, it's not easy and it's not necessary since DirectX is fully backward compatible. The whole DirX runtime scheme seems a little strange since the current version of 9, being 9.0c has been around for about 4 years I think and has been revised a few times since 2005 with no named revisions. Perhaps someone who is computer literate can explain this. Anyhow, I checked the original download from 'worthplaying.com' and it does include DirX that you can extract as well. If you happen to have it on your desktop you can R-click the Zip archive icon, L-click Properties, L-click WinAce and see that all DirX files were last modified 8/10/2008. I'm guessing this is the version you need (Aug) with the missing component(s). It could be the d3dx9_35.dll file missing on the most current version.

Status : Offline | Thanks Camaroboy. This is just too complicated for me. I have other programs that I can't get to work either. At least not since I upgraded my graphics card to the Nvidia 7900 GS. It got some programs to work but caused problems with other games that had been working.
I'm going to reformat my system in a few weeks anyway. Maybe once I do I'll get the directX worked out.
I've been trying to get Phantasmagoria 2 to run. I know it worked before the upgrade. Anyway, I tried following Inferno's directions which usually work, but this time they didn't. My game starts to load and then goes into a sound loop with a black screen.
I'm very dissapointed, but... on the other hand this has encouraged me to finally install one of my "new games". Still debating on which one.
Anyway, thanks for the information.

Run the Win2000 Launcher 1.5.2 program, and add main.exe inside "game" directory.
Multiple processors users (SMP)
Mark only this option:
Processor 1
Now it should work.
By the way, if you having problems to run Phantasmagoria 2, check this page:

And i also have a playlist for Phantasmagoria:

Status : Offline | Ripper,
I don't know what the problem is with my system, but I tried both those suggestions and I still can't get either game to work.
I have an email out to Inferno, but have not yet heard back.
That launcher for Phantasmagoria 2 sounds like the exact thing to get it working perfectly, but it does nothing. Could it be because I have hyperthreading? Do I need to go into Bios and turn that off? I suspect also that XP SP3 may be at fault. Maybe it only worked under SP2.
I'll try it again after I reformat my system before updating to SP3.
Thanks for the advice.
