Status : Offline | Oh gosh 17.... what a sad, strange year that was for me. My father had refused to let me stay on at school so I had a crappy job in a shipping company doing manual double entry ledgers - no computers back then.
I celebrated turning 17 by having my long hair chopped into what I thought was the height of sophistication but which everyone including the boy I was trying to impress, hated and called a mushroom. :-/ I discovered the joy of spending my wages in the bookshop - still have those paperbacks. They cost 40p back then. I spent my wages buying clothes and lying to my mother about how much they cost and I tried to escape by applying to join the WRAF.
All my friends stayed in school so I had no company and I spent months trying to coach myself maths to resit the only exam subject I had failed. I failed it again. I ended that year by secretly enrolling for adult college and resigning from my job.  idn't tell my father until after we'd returned from a family holiday in Menorca - boy did he blow up at me. Sent me to coventry for 3 months. LOL
All up, not a year I enjoyed or felt empowered about.
Hope yours is a bit more fun than mine was KingRyan.
oh wait. I've just remembered - it wasn't all bad. On holiday there were two German soldiers who had the most amazing musculature.... I simply drooled. So I said hello to them in the lift and that night they both asked me to dance but when they found out how young I was they were polite and friendly but weren't interested in hanging out with a virgin. [sigh].... yeah... 17 is an awkward between age. It'll soon be over.

I think Henry David Thoreau said it well: "If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."
Here's to your dreams, Ryan!

No one starts at 1, so when they have their 1st birthday, they begin the second year of their life. Therefore, the age is always one less than the number of years.
So, begin 18th year means just turning 17. The 18th birthday comes at the end of the 18th year.

| Deleted User | Yes, I checked his profile now - it says 18. So, he just made a perfectly understandable little slip.
Anyway, if we wanted to become nitpickish now, (like some other people....) /me gives the godess a threatening 'nitpicking' look
..we could argue that life indeed starts before birth. Unfortunately, we couldn't argue that it is a full year before birth, but we could attempt to confuse the issue, nontheless...

But Traveler, it's not called Lifeday. It's called Birthday.
So it doesn't matter when we define the beginning of life during the prenatal cycle.

[smiley=laughing.gif] True, Terry, true - but the poor lad under discussion did say he is starting his 18th year of life, when he merely meant his eighteenth-and-a-bit year of life. (he didn't mention the word Birthday - but that could well have been what confused him a tad, because if he had used that wording, he would have used the number Eighteen, instead of the number Nineteen, which is the number describing the year of life that he is starting.)
He obviously made his tiny slip merely because he was in a hurry to get out and go PARTY! [smiley=rockin.gif] Wouldn't you have been, at that age?
Sheesh! And people call me the resident nitpicker! There's two in cahoots above me there!

At that age Traveler, it never occurred to me to stop and post messages to strangers before going out and partying on my birthday or any other day.
Matter of fact, it still doesn't.

2. Happy Birthday KingRyan - why you didn't just say you were having your 18th is beyond me....
3. Terry - some people regard other people they chat to via internet forums as a special kind of friendship group - not 'total strangers'.
4. Furthermore, the internet hadn't been invented when you were 18. It was still the telegraph back then wasn't it? [smiley=angel_smiley.gif]

This gave me a great laugh Sorry for the slip-up ... I didn't want to sound like I was into shameless self-promotion, so I tried to phrase it a little more politely ... but yes, for the record, I am 18 today Just had a big fancy steak dinner with family, and feelin' good!!!!

But that was the day my father bought me a purple faced watch (that I no longer have) and that was the day my sister brought home the man she later married and divorced for domestic violence and adultery.
Everyone should keep a diary - they're so much fun when you're too old to remember things.

I said strangers not total strangers Caroline and no, the telegraph hadn't been invented yet. Heck, back then we thought the Pony Express was fast.
Thankfully, our first Postmaster General, Ben Franklin was a progessive kind of guy. By establishing regular mail routes, he reduced average delivery time between the colonies to a scant seven days. It was like instant communication to we commoners.
Oh yes, lest I forget...
I sent a birthday card to King Ryan the instant this special occasion was announced. It should arrive via Wells Fargo sometime next week - assuming the stagecoach isn't waylaid by bandits.
Cheers, Terry

And here's what I'm also thinking...
My son is also turning 18 soon and I'm really scared. Is my job as a parent done? Has he got all the tools to make all the important decisions he'll need to do? Will he take my advice? Will I be able to shut up and let him decide on his own?
Gah! *rips hair out*
