It was really emotive when Lydia was giving a big clap when she discovered or understood something of great importance and commented on it with true honesty. Don't forget that she was strolling in a world of pure magic. I believe that sometimes the law of logical outcome in these worlds aren't quite 'human'!

I haven't played it in some weeks, so I can't give you specific quotes, but it was moreso the voiceacting that killed it for me - she sounded like she was trying to sound like a man - and failing miserably - to me. She came across as overdramatic and droning at the best of times. I enjoyed Zac's voice, and Celeste's was okay (I wish they would have cast her as Lydia), but other than that I found the voice acting ridiculous. It really, really killed it for me.

For me, Keepsake left me dry. Unlike, moi, Some gamers want a good story so badly that they can ignore some warts to embrace the characters and story, imbued with what their own imaginations add. Not me. I have to be sold a story. I’m a “prove it” kind of audience, and a game and acting and voice and story simply have to be good.  I can’t suspend disbelief if I’m distracted by a voice or vacant gameplay.  That said, it was a pretty game.

For a game that didn't sell very well and got few reviews anywhere Keepsake certainly stirs up a few arguments! Despite what I wrote earlier, I personally enjoyed the emptiness of the game and was charmed by the humanity of the main plot. The main problem for me was it was not intuitive or logical the order in which you had to visit locations to solve puzzles to advance the story so I resorted to the 'hint' feature more than I would have liked.

By the way the same actor voiced Zak and Mustavio, I think he went over the top with the latter one so you couldn't tell he was the same guy..

That's the English version of the game, right? Because one reason why I instantly liked Lydia in the German version was her voice - the actress lending her voice to Lydia did a really good job in portraying her as a sometimes confused, sometimes scared but always caring young woman who was determined to find her best friend.

It's a shame that bad voice acting can ruin a game so much - I experienced quite the same with the first Phantasmagoria when I played the German version. Horrible. I really hated Adrienne. She came along as a whining, spoiled and dumb person; I didn't care about her. I replayed the game later, this time the English version - and what can I tell you, Adrienne wasn't as annoying. I still didn't like her much but I think that's due to how the character was developed - she is no April Ryan, no Nico, no Kate Walker, no Grace Nakimura.

Yes, it was the English version
From what I've heard, most of the people who disliked the game listed the voice acting as one of their major concerns -- I suppose it's just different kinds of people who can or can't deal with certain types of things
Certainly, bad voice acting almost always kills a game for me, which is a shame because I really do try to be forgiving with games so that I can get more "into" them.

For those of you that gave up on Grim Fandango, I suggest you give it another try, but in a different way. Use a walkthrough until you get to Rubacava. This is where the game really grabbed me. Rubacava is a fantastic city of the dead where it is always nighttime. The graphics are great, as are the characters you meet there. As for the controls, you will get used to them if you ignore them and concentrate on the story. Grim Fandango is a classic, and there is nothing being made presently in adventure games that is better. Crummy controls are a small price to pay for enjoying such a great game.

I did not really find Lydia to be that bad. Her voice was not spot-on, but i have heard far worse in games. Zak was actually good, but Mustavio *shudders*. It does surprise me that it's the same voice actor, they don't sound anything like each other, but on the other hand concidering how Mustavio sounds, it would be hard to identify the person behind the voice.
