I've recently been compiling a list of all the games I've ever played, and whether or not I've completed them. I'm somewhat obsessive about finishing my games, so when I noticed all the games I hadn't yet completed and planned on going back to, and then further noticed games that I refused to go back to, I realised that I must have really, really disliked these games.

So think of this as a Hall of Shame, if you will. What adventure games have you played that were so bad or frustrating, you swore to never play them again?

I imagine some very interesting replies and clashes of opinions here

Of the 100+ adventures I've played, only 5 so far I will never bother to touch again, despite never having finished them:

Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None - It felt more like an interactive movie than a game to me. In the five or so hours I played this game, I didn't have any fun. I play games for fun, or because they highly interest me. If I hadn't already read the book, I might have continued playing, because I find the story interesting. But even then, perhaps not.

Flight of the Amazon Queen - This game wasn't disastrously horrible, but what killed it for me is the reels and reels of unskippable dialogue. For some reason I found myself always accidentally clicking a conversation option I'd already heard before, so I'd have to sit through minutes of the same thing. It got old really, really fast, and I just couldn't deal with it anymore.

Huygen's Disclosure (I'm not really even sure I'd count this as an adventure) - This game is some sort of action/adventure hybrid, and while it's classified as an adventure on whatever site you look at, the very frustrating combat/aiming system makes it feel like more of an action game. It wasn't the fact that it felt like so much of an action game that turned me off (I love many action/shooter games) but that it tried to pass itself off as an adventure game, that and the horrible control/battle system.

Keepsake - The voice acting mostly killed it for me. The moderately bad scriptwriting and endless walking from place to place finished it off. The main character sounds like a woman trying to sound like a man (and failing miserably). Not only is her voice awful, but she says the most annoying (and oftentimes random) things. That's a big no-no for me.
The game world is huge, considering later in the game you have access to almost every single screen at all times. Couple this with some very roundabout ways to get where you want to go and puzzles that insist you walk from one side of the map to another, often multiple times, and you feel like punching someone in the face.
A couple of the puzzles were fun, but most of them were silly tile or slider puzzles that got extremely old. I really wanted to like this game, but I really really didn't.

Rama - People called Myst a glorified puzzle collection. I say the title should go to this game. I can't say much about this game because I only played it for a few hours before stopping, but, while I love my puzzles as much as the next person, when I get no real reward for solving them (to me, a reward is an advance in plot or characterization) other than more puzzles, I lose interest very fast. That and I've never been inclined toward math problems, so when I sit down to play something for fun in my free time, math is the last thing I want to be doing.

I'm sure some of you will disagree with my choices. I'm sure I'll disagree with some of yours. I can't wait to read them

Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor. My first Nancy Drew game, I never finished it and will never buy another. I hated the fact that every time you wanted to open a door, you had to solve the same stupid puzzle. I hated her voice. I hated the timed sequences and mini-games. I didn't care for any of the characters in the game and thought the story was boring and predictable (as well as far fetched and unbelievable).

I would have abandoned Cold Case Files but I had already finished it before I could (i.e. entire game completed within half an hour).

Dead Reefs. Kept running into bugs that crashed my computer (not just the game) every time I tried to open a door.

(Gabriel Knight 3)

As for the first three..I just couldn't play them... they didnt appeal to me at all

Gabriel Knight I just cannot install.. it always gives me an error. Maybe it's because of vista? It's kinda sad because I know im missing a great game.

I'm going to try Belief and Betrayal and Secret Files now... I know it's risky giving the mixed reviews but ill give them a try.

Playing: Skyrim (ongoing)

Last Finished: can't recall, been too long.

What's GK3 saying? I played it through in Vista no problem, just had to disable a codec that was screwing with the sierra logo intro movie.

I have a pile of adventure games I've not finished. However games I do not plan on ever finishing? Perry Rhodan fits that description. I can't be bothered, I'm not interested in the story or the characters so I'm just robotically following through the motions. Not worth the effort.

It says:

Setup Initialization Error

Setup is unable to run a program needed to proceed with the installation. Restart your system and try again.

Error 105

Then appears an Application Error and the installation cancels.  :-/

Inesrocks - might have to install that on another computer or through VirtualPC and just copy it over. Not really sure whats going on there.

I also gave up on Voyage. I made it to the moon but after that I was so disconnected from the types of puzzles I found that I quit and never started it up again. It's like Myserious Island only without the logic.

I've got two computers and none of them would accept Gabriel Knight 3. The XP machine gave me some kind of error message. (can't remember what )
And I've got the wrong video card on my Win 95/98.

I never could finish Broken Sword 4 either due to not having the right video card.

I think there are more games that I haven't finished but intend to get back to some day. Usually I finish adventure games, even if it takes a walkthrough (or a saved game in the case of the Wanted shooting gallery) to do it. I really can't think of any that I know for sure I would never complete (as opposed to putting them on the back burner) -- though there are a few that I wouldn't bother trying in the first place (e.g. -- Koala Lumpur).

In the past year:
Sam and Max (I forget which one. Couldn't take anymore)
Keepsake (I spent 2 hours with the game, woke up, and quit)
Culpa Innata (every turn seemed a big let down to me)
The Cameron Files

Crystal Key 2.  Boring, failed to hold my interest.

Lots of others I threw my hands up over that I want to get back to...

Grim Fandango - didn't understand this one and hated the controls, maybe with a w/t?
Rhem - I like this one, I just keep getting lost
The Longest Journey - can't stand the conversations and it makes no sense but I'd like to see what all the fuss was about
Keepsake - didn't really give it my best shot
Myst Revelation - got about 7/8ths of the way through before m/b died. Dread starting over but would like to see the end that everyone hates so much
Nautilus - loaded it but lost interest after hearing everyone bag it.
Voyage - kept dying in the capsule - I mean, how am I supposed to know how to make bloody oxygen? Can't even manage the first puzzle! Maybe a w/t?

Most recently, Belief & Betrayal. The voice acting is just awful. The main character is supposed to be Welsh, but he sounds like he's from Southern California and has a nasal affliction. On top of that, he's a doofus.

The first time he sits down and talks with someone, he nearly fidgets himself to death. (I quit playing before he sat down to talk to anyone else.)

I found the animation sloppy; during dialog, the characters' mouths sometimes stopped moving about halfway through. Other times, they didn't move at all.

*Minor Spoiler*

The part where you have to get the guy to retrieve a bottle of wine from a garbage can pushed me over the edge. I kept clicking and clicking, and all I got were wise-cracks and sarcasm ("What do I look like, a garbage collector?" "You know, I'd really appreciate it if you'd stop making me look inside all of the dirty places you find"
. This went on and on and on. I was never able to get him to pick up the wine, and I left him standing by the garbage (how appropriate). I haven't been back.

Mysterious Journey II - I just couldn't get into it, no matter how hard I tried. But that was a few years back and I may try playing it again.

The Sentinel - Tried it when it first came out but didn't care for it. Tried it again recently and found it tedious.

One bad game I did finish, although it was a chore, is Secret Files: Tunguska. The voice acting is terrible, with protagonist Nina being the worst offender. She sounds like a screeching Valley Girl to me. And if the trailers are any indication, her voice is the same in Secret Files 2. That's one game I won't be getting...

There was a time I finished every game I played, but I'm not as young as I used to be and it takes a lot of energy to push myself through a really bad one. It feels much nicer to just move on...

I'm with Jenny. As a completionist at heart, I hate to definitely abandon a game. Maybe Egypt 3 might be my only one, -not because I found the game horrible or any specific fault with it - it just became so-o-o tedious eventually, that I couldn't force myself to continue, and also decided never to try another Egyptian game either.  This is perhaps a bit strange, as I actually found it a rather pleasant game - just not a compelling game.

I too have had many problems with Grim Fandango, but I love off-beat humour such as the game presents, and might for that reason give fighting through the bugs a go, one day when I have the time.

Eh, funny, Flight of the Amazon Queen was my first adventure game and I still have fond memories of it
. Can't say i I didn't like the dialogs or not, really can't recall.

As for games I've abandoned (too much to take account of), but most of these games I think I'll eventually get to them, at least to finish them once and for all (Necronomicon - Bug playing crashed the game; Longest Journey - needed the hard drive free space; and many others that I lost interest in the game but hope to regain it).

As for games I've abandoned because I couldn't really keep me interested in playing the game and I don't have any ideas of ever going back to it: Gadget, takes the prize.

for me i rarely .. go and abandon a game
if the puzzles are too stupid or.. the story is just painful to watch i just go through using the walkthrough..
because why go thorugh a game that you have to cringe through

sherlock holmes nemesis.. wow what a stinker ..
i walkthroughed it so i could see the end and just make it through

Grim Fandango  agreed I couldn't deal with the controls ether.
As for Rhiannon I worked on the beta test and I had a little trouble with that at first too but it wasn't long before I changed my thoughts and now I think it's really good. If you want to know why your there you will have to read all the papers and books you find then the story comes together. If you want to pick up inventory then you need a use for the item.  This works good too if you dislike sorting through 100's of items. Make sure you read everythig on Rhiannon's cmputer as a lot of the story is there.

For me it was Darkstone (hate looking down at tiny characters), Dark Side of the Moon, (can get the game to play, but can't see the writing to respond.  I understand this is a common problem with this game.) And also Amber: Journeys Beyond.  I would love to finish this game, but I can't get it to work on my XP system.

Other than that, I've got a slew of games that I've started and for some reason put aside.  I still intend to finish them.  Although now I'll have to start all over again at the beginning.

Riddle of the Sphinx. I just couldn't get into it, and to be honest, there are only so many puzzles I can take before my brain locks up. And for some reason, the game ran painfully slowly and the music kept temporarily halting whenever I stepped into a new scene (and I'm running a pretty new machine, too).
