Terran conflict in particular has a lot of things to do, more ships and stations to buy/build and so on, which appeals to some fans, while the stronger storyline of X2 makes some other people prefer that game. I fund the fact that you could enter space stations in X2 to be neat at first, but after a while I just started to hit esc to get past those scenes quickly.

The Gothic games were so frustrating because I wanted to love them because of the stunning environments and they just had too many problems so I could never finish any of them. Risen is much better. I heard that it was shorter, with a smaller world but that doesn't bother me, I've been playing for weeks and I just reached chapter 2! I really want to complete it so I can play the sequel when it comes out

Risen is really nice, though, and it does have that "Gothic" flavor to it, especially when it comes to the factions. So have you decided which faction to go with, Walsh?

Yeah I went with the Don! I wasn't very fond of either but being a castaway I had to choose one didn't I? The Order just seemed cruel and I didn't want to be brainwashed :-/

Well I liked Gothic 2 quite a lot and I'm not exactly sure why I stopped playing, I think it was a bug in one of the main quests where I couldn't progress any further. I must have got at least a third of the way through since I could kill orcs fairly easily.
I didn't play Gothic 3 for very long even with all the patches installed. I found the combat much worse than 2 where I could swing and block being able to tell when I would hit and miss. And it ran terribly slow on my PC.
Never played 1. And to be honest, I never found the Gothic dialogue or characters to be all that great - something I think which Risen fixed. The only thing I like less about Risen is the world is slightly less open - I didn't like how I couldn't leave Harbor Town or the Monastery until I had finished my tasks there.

Oh, I'm glad to hear you finally got your (new) PC going again, Markonikov! May you have many hours of pleasure with it.
Re Arkania - I actually have the game, but shelved it for after my own upgrade because i was having performance probs with it on my old system. ...and now that I have my new system, I can't find my old gamesaves
I'm tempted to replay from scratch, just a pity I'm starting to have less time for gaming again these days. My vacation is strictly speaking over by now.

Yes, I went with the Don at first because I too, didn't want to be brainwashed. Then, after I'd played a bit as the Don's follower, I saw somewhere online what to do to become a mage, so I reloaded an earlier save and followed the mage path to the end. When I have time for the game again, I'll reload an earlier save again, and play as an Order warrior a bit, just out of curiosity.
When you're finished with Risen, you might want to try Dragon Knight Saga. I played through most of Divinity 2, (DKS is the expansion pack including the main game of Divinity 2) and it's a pretty nice game.

I loved exploring the beautiful island in the beginning but I think there's a stage with these type of games where it becomes all about the quests, stats and levelling up. Once you've seen every type of tree, monster and waterfall it can get repetitive. It's a great game I just wish there could be more variety, although they've done the best they could for a tropical island.
Thanks for the DKS rec I'll have to check that out, looks good

hard to say...
Risen has much more character customization, more free roaming, different factions to join. I found combat quite horrible, the controls felt clunky
Arcania had better graphics, more captivating storyline and more interesting quests. The world feels much more 'alive'. Combat is a bit too easy
As Trav said somewhere Risen should be named Gothic IV instead of Arcania, because the overall gameplay of the Gothic series is comparable to Risen. In Arcania levelling, crafting, alchemy has been dumbed down a lot.

I'm surprised that the developers managed to create an accessible rouge like, considering the sub-genres reputation of being incredibly unforgiving for beginners.

glad i got you addicted
The only thing that really starts to annoy me is that they made only a few different character models. Sure they're very pretty, but this limitation really kills the realism. One exception, thank god, is that hideous girl you're supposed to marry in the beginning, That monster seems to be unique
