Lands of Lore 2 is one of my most found memories of playing old rpgs. World felt alive and it had a great unique atmosphere to it mixed with fairy tale'ish vibes and it's own thing (cat people, etc).

If you ever played any of the Wizardy series then it's similar to that.

In the first game you are even allowed to play as one of the cat people (he is the canonical hero, who they mention in the second game, the other possible main characters are sadly not canonical).

By the way, does anyone know anything about the realms of arkania games? They are based on the same rule system as Drakensang, and are considered classics in Germany, yet outside of Germany you almost never hear anything about them. They are available through GOG so I've been pondering if I should pick them up at some point.

I've heard that they are pretty good, Fnord, and the screenshots look quite ok as well.  I'd be very interested in them myself, if I wasn't already so tied down with other games.

The old Westwood games are great, I collect them all, and enjoy them when i have time, esp the ones that were fully voiced Stewart is perfect for that role. Glad people are still interested in the Classics. I am sorry that some of them did not get the attention they deserved at the time of release but Westwood had a PR person who was very bad at their job during some of the releases so they got dropped from the radar fast. Fortunately for us we can always play them when we want.

I am still playing X-Wing, and by now I've finished the game proper!  It was a lot of fun, and much easier than I would have thought, actually.  Here's a complete uniform:

Unlike Tours I and II, Tour III has fourteen missions, yet you still only get twelve ribbons.  Instead of ribbons for the last two missions you receive the Diamond Eyes (the two white dots in the centre of the collar) for the penultimate mission, and simply get the end-of-tour medal for finishing the final mission.

I'm now plowing straight through to Tour IV (supplied by the first expansion, "Imperial Pursuit"
, and have thus far completed four missions.  Tours IV and V have twenty missions, but like all tours of duty they have only twelve ribbons; I imagine you get a ribbon ever second mission, with a ribbon each on the last four.  Because of this my medal case looks a little barren:

I intend to fill it out, though.

So far I really like Imperial Pursuit.  You truly do get a sense of being on the run, of barely scraping by against crushing odds.  In my last mission so many TIE bombers actually managed to launch torpedoes at the frigate Anvil that it hypered away with hull damage.  I believe this is by design, and it's a very effective way to put the player on the edge of their seat!  [smiley=zombie.gif]

I recently finished Insecticide. Decent humor, fun premise, but rather bland gameplay. And the promised sequel never came about, apparently, leaving the story hanging. Ah, well.

I've also just finished the adventure portion of Plants vs. Zombies. Definitely the most fun I've had in what's essentially a tower defense game (and I don't even like that sort of game in general).

I just made it to Act II of Dragon Age 2... and since I'm slightly underwhelmed by it (for the same reasons that seem to be most popular at this point: repetitive dungeons; enough of Kirkwall already; easy combat; battles are too rapid and over with quickly) I've decided to break for a week or so by firing up

CRYSIS 2!!

Holy $%#* is all I can say at this point... It's beautiful.  It's tense.  It's fluid.  It's a FPS for FPS fans.

It has an incredible amount of production value, which Crytek has always done so well with (IMO).  And if you have a rig that can handle it, cranking the visuals to "Extreme" gives you a glimpse at the newest KING of visual polygasm.

Beyond the visuals is a frantic, excellently paced shooter that keeps you moving and thinking... and feeling really bad for the common folk that succumbed to whatever the hell is spreading like wildfire in the game.

Spoiler AlertProphet!

Playing: Skyrim: Dragonborn/Dawnguard; Torchlight 2; To The Moon; Far Cry 3

Finished: HomeFront; Far Cry 3; Dishonored

Always Playing: Half Life 2

Looking Forward To: BioShock: Infinite

Reading: BioShock: Rapture; SW: Revan

Crytek is a remarkable company and has made some of the best 3D worlds in the business...from Far Cry to Crysis to Crysis 2 they reign supreme for high detail and amazement. I guess it is partly that German obsession with perfection but they also have great imagination as how to make your game adventure highly tense and challenging. I still recall my fear, dread and adrenaline dealing with the Trygens in Far Cry...took me months to get thru that epic.  Glad you are enjoying Crysis 2.

My party in Shadows over Riva. The dwarf looks incredibly happy. (All characters are based of (and named after) pen and paper RPG characters that my group has made in the past).

I'm pretty sure he means that he himself made his party up of characters from his Pen and paper group, not that the actual developers did.

I designed the party myself (the game comes with a pre-designed party, that I guess is better than mine, but part of the fun with a CRPG is creating a good party). Check my previous post to see how much control you actually have over your individual party members when you create them.

I finally managed to get an RPG going again!
Just started Two Worlds and having fun with it so far. The fighting is pretty easy (unlike Gothic 2 which I never managed to handle) and the world seems rather nice so far.
Shame about the bad voice acting but that seems to be quite common in RPGs as far as I can tell.

Currently playing:  Dragon Age Origins,  Darkness Within 2, The Witcher, Fallout 3

It is really fun actually. If anyone is interested in playing Shadows over Riva, be warned that it takes some commitment to get into it. One of the highlights of the game is actually the text boxes, which explains what your characters does. These seem to be based upon what skills your characters have, for an example the illiterate warrior joked about there being no shortage of fuel while standing in a library, to which my mage threw himself in front of some bookshelves, as if to protect them from the dumb warrior. Each characters also have phobias (and stats for them), which impacts their reactions (it also has some gameplay effects, like for an example when a few undead dwarves attacked, my dwarf ran away, as she has a relatively high value in necrophobia).

Done with Shadows over Riva! Through the game they show some really nicely drawn pictures of what is going one. I don't know if I like the way they make the party look though...

Finally got around to finishing the original Acaria campaign in Sacred Gold yesterday and started the Underworld expansion last night.

Although I prefer full-featured, D&
-style RPGs with greater depth and party systems, Sacred does offer a wonderully colorful, amazingly large game world with tons of exciting combat action and just enough main story + side quests to keep me interested.

In a nutshell, it is like Divine Divinity with an even bigger, more diverse world map plus even nicer graphics. However, the gameplay and character-building options are decidedly simpler with less dialog and virtually no thief / stealth components to speak of.

Nevertheless, the pace is swift, the action is addictve and the sights are pretty damned impressive.

Cheers, Terry

I've been working my way through Fallout 2, just arriving in New Reno while working on helping out Broken Hills. It's still a little rough around the edges like the first game, but huge and very welcome improvements have been made in party and inventory management. Some of the biggest improvements I've seen from one game to another in a series, all while preserving the best from the first game. Great work by the developers there.

Spoiler AlertI did run into a what I thought at the time was game breaking moment. I came across the encounter where Pariah Dog joins your party. And at the time I thought, "Great, It'll be like having Dogmeat from the first game!"

Well, the joke was on me. To make things worse, I didn't realize just what I'd picked up for some time, as I was exploring Vault City for awhile, and as I wasn't fighting I didn't get to see the more obvious effects of that fiend in canine form. No, it was only when I went to Broken Hills and was wandering around in the sewers when my party started getting all these weird critical failures. Even then I didn't realize what was going on until I opened up the character screen to check something when I noticed the Jinxed trait. Jinxed? Where'd that come from? I never took the Jinxed trait! And my Luck is at 2! How in the world...and then the words from the game's description of the mutt popped into my head. "Bad Luck Dog!"  It was the dog! And I never suspected until now!

Well, I was in a bind. I didn't want to restore an old save as I had done a lot since running into the devil dog, and I certainly didn't want to continue the game with this comedy of errors going on around me. So taking a peek online it turned out my best choice at this point was to put down the dog myself. All zarking 750 hit points of him. With my character critical failing and hurting himself half the time.
Well, all I can say is thank goodness I took Doctor as a tag skill, and at least I built up a bunch of XP from using it there. And I got to see just how important the Luck stat was, something I had been wondering about. I can chuckle about it now, but I hope the game doesn't throw anything like that at me again -- that was annoying beyond words at the time.  [smiley=shudder.gif]

There is another way to get rid of unwanted party member
Spoiler AlertYou can sell them to the slavers, I don't know if that works for dogs though (you can sell your nagging wife, if you get stuck with her, and while I don't usually like doing such things, she can be quite annoying)

Hey, glad to see you got some time for gaming, Terry, and even gladder to see you posting about it on here.

@ Andromus:  I read your spoiler and thought it was quite hilarious.  Reminds me of killing my own people (grunts) when I reach a pop cap with a strategy game, so I can rather make upgraded units in their place.  Not all games allow it, but some do let you zap them with lightning from out of the sky.  [smiley=skull_laugh.gif]

On topic;  I got behind with some work while finishing DA2, but next week I'd really like to do a strategy game, I think.  In the meantime, I might try out The Apprentice LA to unwind a bit though. That kind of time-managment thingie can be oddly relaxing sometimes.
