Deleted UserIvinia, you cannot let a game as "famous" as Bioshock slip past unplayed in any case; and seeing as you enjoy shooters, I think you'd prefer it's gameplay to that of Assassin's Creed.  So glad to see you managed to find a copy, at a reasonable price to boot.

I also never played Bioshock when it was released, finding it a bit expensive at the time, and deciding to wait for the price to come down.  I panicked when it suddenly disappeared, so when I found it (new) somewhere for $18, I grabbed it, and so far, I've just checked it out for about 20 mins or so..

Now I just have to find the time to properly play it...

Officially I am playing Drakensang, but I'm tiring of it already, - especially as I find combat hard, (no real oppurtunities to grind for powergaming
) and as I find the story a bit shallow and one dimensional thus far.  I'm too early in the game to really comment though, and being a completionist, I'm going to bravely push on.
Saying "I'll come back to it after a break" is why I still have not finished Rise of the Argonauts or Gothic 2:NOTR, or Mass Effect; so I must start getting more strict with myself, and force myself to carry on even when the game starts feeling a bit stale. (..and other unplayed games are winking  :

I know games are for fun, but I hate the unfinished feeling of leaving a game hanging, and I love the feeling of satisfaction upon finishing a game.

Sadly, I'm not overly impressed with Bioshock. It's seemingly a bit Doom3ish - things jump out at you, you kill them. Achieve some task and expect more things to jump out of you in areas you already cleared. Rinse and repeat...:-/

Maybe it will get better and more engrossing, we'll see. Right now in addition to the above, it seems like it's an endless battle of running out of supplies.

Ummm, it looks *pretty* though!

Just started Arcanum and am thoroughly enjoying it.

I'm stuck with my laptop not working- which means I've had to temporarily abandon the Witcher and Overclocked.
I've installed Arcanum on my old 'backup' laptop as an inbetween game.

Good move so far!

Currently playing:  Dragon Age Origins,  Dishonored, The Witcher, Fallout 3, Deponia

Well, Bioshock has gotten better the further I get.  While it's no Thief game in terms of an engrossing storyline, it's still entertaining.

I'm currently about halfway through Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. I was bracing myself for something excruciatingly difficult in the tradition of the original Prince of Persia games, and instead found an easy to medium difficulty game, that if anything, could stand a little more challenge.

But it's a lot of fun nonetheless.  I'm enjoying all the acrobatic moves the Prince can perform, whether in combat or working his way across chasms or up heights. And it's got some pretty good writing behind it for an action game, also.

Deleted UserOnly got into the first level of Bioshock and love it. The water and fire effects are awesome, as well as everything else. The atmosphere is spooky, which I love of course, and I also like the tidbits of info you get from the recorded logs you find around, video broadcasts from Ryan and your guide Atlas. The only odd thing I've had happen is that when I found the inferno plasmid, I lost the electro bolt one. I thought you started with two plasmid slots so I'm a little confused on this one. I'll have to check into this. Happy Gaming.

It gets a little harder near the end.

Overall, though, it is on the somewhat easy side.  Still, I found it a lovely experience.  I hope you enjoy it as uch as I did, sir!  8-)

I'm on chapter 10 of Dead Space and I have to admit that it's one of the finest fps I've ever played. It's the first time too when I hear these horrific sounds of necromorphs that a bletch fondles my spine. A complete disgust! [smiley=shudder.gif] As for the graphics: well, I'm proud of having this game. Really.

Started playing Silent Hill: Homecoming. I like it a lot although I have played for about 30 minutes only. I like the atmosphere and the absolute evil that lurks in the darkness trying to come out. This game tries to explain not the actual evil that takes form of a beast but the inner fears of us which when they come to the surface they haunt us forever....

I love the Prince of Persia series, the early ones were among my first video games and i loved them too...but..

i reached a tower the prince has to RUN up the walls and stuff, and i just found my fear of heights overwhelming my joy of the lovely graphcis and settings, i wish they had not indulged the arcade wild kids who can do anything and not be afraid so much and given us adventurer explorers more solid ground to stand on..
i may try again sometime soonish, as i do love the effects and the lighgint and the story.....and that princess is waiting for me upstairs somewhere...waiting waiting.....

Well, as I go deeper and deeper into the game I realize that is a very good game. I can't understand the prejudice of many ppl that didn't trust this new project from the beginning just because the creative team was American. This is a very good game. Really good. Now back to Spoiler Alertthe cemetery.

Deleted UserGosh, I really must overcome my silly fears and play a survival horror sometime. You guys really seem to have a lot of fun with them.  Unfortunately,  I just feel so much safer against advancing zombies when I have a sword or gun in my hand... or better yet, a bazooka...

I purchased the Spellforce collection when I was staying interstate in Melbourne and needed something to pass away the nights I wasn't sight-seeing. It came with Spellforce 1 and 2, but out of principle I started with Spellforce 1... I only played through the tutorial but I really didn't enjoy myself so I abandoned it  :-/ Perhaps Spellforce 2 will be more engrossing.

I finally got over my fear of the DRM in Spore and installed it on my brand new laptop. Hopefully it wasn't a bad idea. I played it for about 40 hours over the course of a single weekend but got tired of the space stage and didn't finish it. I thought it was quite a lovely game, good to pass some time. I much prefer the Sims to it though, or a good AG or RPG game

I'm not 'properly' playing any games right now as I'm in school and don't want to get addicted to anything. For the first time in my life I'm on top of my schoolwork and don't want to compromise that.

I did however purchase PuzzleQuest on the Xbox Live Arcade (brilliant thing, the Live Arcade, by the way.. especially with the Netflix available to NA users) and it's mildly fun, though a bit of a waste of time.

I'm currently searching for cheap copies of Bioshock, Dead Space and Left4Dead. Still have to pick up copies of Resident Evil 5 and Silent Hill: Homecoming too. And there are a few AG's I've been meaning to get...

Gosh, there simply is not enough time or money to go around!

Trav: Certainly get over your fears! Survival horrors are some of the most fun you can have. Perhaps you can get your husband into it even?!

The most fun I've ever had with a survival horror game was playing Resident Evil 4 on the Wii. The Wii-mote really adds an extra something to the gameplay, it's like playing in an arcade from the comfort of your couch. I can't recommend it enough!

Now what a pity that is. A friend of mine had the Spellforce 2, and it looked nice, so I got Spellforce Universe, and also liking to start at the beginning, I started with no 1 and loved it!  It does have some strategy elements, though, (and fantasy strategy is my pudding) -so could it be that, that had put you off, Arcadia?

Now, strange that you enjoy SPORE and SIMS so much, which I personally find more boring than strategy; - although, if you look at it carefully, they are based on the same premise.  Except, it's much more fun to play strategy and once you have figured out the strengths and weaknesess of each unit, to flatten and pwn your enemies!     [smiley=skull_laugh.gif]

I'll do a dastardly deal with you: I'll try survival horror (you can even choose: I have unplayed copies of Resident Evil 5 , and Alone in the Dark:The New Nightmare -which one? ), if you decide to try out some Strategy.      [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]

Got any strategy? I'll help you choose, if you want.

EDIT: Ok, ok.  I'll settle for you trying out Spellforce 2 (which, admittedly, is prettier than Spellforce 1, graphically speaking - not sure about possible bugs, though) past the tutorial and at least to after the 1st town. You can still pick out a survival horror for me.    :
      How does that sound?   [smiley=angel.gif]

Hmm well in fairness (in regards to Spellforce) I only played the tutorial and it shames me to confess what most put me off on the game... was the voice acting. I thought it was just horrible. Now I'm not exactly sure what the exact definition of a strategy game is, but I play and enjoy a lot of real-time sims like Starcraft, Warcraft, Age of Empires, etc. I've played quite a few turn-based strategy games but their relatively slow pace usually bores me quite quickly.

What strategy games would you particularly recommend Trav? Perhaps I've been missing out on the good ones. I did feel that Spellforce must have been a good game because it spawned so many expansions and a sequel, I just found the tutorial very boring I suppose. Then again, I found the Fable for Xbox tutorial quite boring but it turned out quite a brilliant game in the end
And I'm the same girl who played all the way through the Witcher tutorial and then stopped playing before the main game started because the tutorial was so long... oh dear. I'm beginning to see a trend.

A deal I can do, and I'm much looking forward to see what you recommend! I would suggest Resident Evil 5 (hopefully with a friend, because I heard the co-op is much better than the second player) - although I haven't played it, I did play AITD: The New Nightmare and was rather disappointed in it. Although I must point out I only played about four hours or so of it, and we've seen how my game judgement appears to fail if I don't pursue a game for very long!

PS I replied to your PM, I'm wary of the JA mail system so I figured I should make sure you got it

Deleted UserOh, did my edit before I saw your reply.  Yes, got first PM from you but I did reply?  I think?

Oh, ok, I didn't realise it was voice-acting had put you off. Yes, the German is still a bit obvious, isn't it?  In games like these I bear the v-acting, it's in AG's that they make me cringe if it's bad.

So, nevermind about the Spellforce 2/strategy, though I could recommend a few strategy games based on your preferences, if you want. What setting do you enjoy? I must admit that I don't really go for WW2, though I enjoy futuristic and fantasy settings, and sometimes historic settings. One which I bought recently and am dying to try out, is a game called Joan of Arc.  Will let you know how I like it.

I guess you can make other SH recommendations in Taurnil's thread on that subject. I'll keep an eye on that thread, thanks!

PS: Some of the strategy games I personally loved so far, has been RON: Rise of Legends; and the Warhammer games - if you like futuristic, try Dawn of War 1; I'll be trying out DOW 2 soon.  Fantasywise, I have a lot, but latest one I liked was Heroes of Annihilated Kingdoms - skirmish mode, and all the Heroes of Might and Magics - I would certainly recommend no 5 to any modern gamer.

King's Bounty is another turned-based strategy game with RPG elements that I started recently, and that looks very nice.

If you like sim games, you must definitely try out the Stronghold series, also Tropico is a load of fun, and so are the Anno games. (Still busy with Anno1701 at the moment) .
Ok, better state preferences first, because I could ramble on for hours here....

Oh no, I typed up a nice long reply message but I've checked my outbox and it says the PM was never sent, so there must have been an error when I sent it
This has happened to me a couple of times now, grr!

I'm not at all a "war" fan in general, I severely dislike the topic. Perhaps that's why I don't like strategy games in general, and a lot of shooters. The schoolwork for my advanced English class is for some reason entirely based around war fiction and movies... I really don't understand what the English language has to do with war and why they couldn't vary it a little.

I'm a fantasy girl, too. Sci-fi is okay too, but I'm mostly in love with fantasy settings

I think I've seen that Joan of Arc game in stores before and it's always drawn my eye. Let me know what you think of it!

Deleted UserWell ok, if you don't like war, and you do like Sims, then maybe some of the political government-type sims will be up your alley; but hey - what's wrong with a war against nasty demons who are going to take over the world if you don't stop them, eh?

I suppose that kind of war is okay ^_^ I'm just not into the whole organised masses of humans killing humans thing. I mean, I adore a good murder mystery, but something about the impersonalness of war just bothers me.

Deleted UserIf you haven't played Rise Of nations Rise of Legends yet, may I just mention that it's cool because it's the whole technology against magic theme, as background, upon which they managed to weave an engaging enough story to have actually had me identify with my main character by the end, - something that is rare in a RTS-type game, I would say.  Don't judge it by the 1st Rise of Nations, it's very different.

I also thought I'd mention this specific game, because all of the other game settings fall into some generic category, be it Sci-fi/futuristic, high fantasy, medieval fantasy, or conventional warfare, either modern or historical, or politcal/economic sims, this one seems to me to be hard to specifically categorise, it's rather unique.

Anyway, that's just my taste - it's one of my personal favourites, but that doesn't necessarily mean others will enjoy it to the same extent..   :

I adored The Longest Journey mostly because of its technology vs magic concept. It's just such an interesting thing to think about. Thanks for the recommendation

Just finished it up. Overall a medium difficulty game, but, yeah, it does get surprisingly harder, at least compared to how easy it was in the first half. I thought at first that this would be an action game adventure gamers would enjoy, it had some interesting puzzles for an action game and decent writing. But the way the difficulty increased in the second half changed my mind. That elevator fight was probably the most frustrating bit. Then of course, Spoiler Alertyou lose the dagger for the last section of the game . But the last sword one picks up balances that out some. Still, I found myself falling a few times and reaching for the rewind button....forgetting I couldn't.   [smiley=doh.gif]

I really enjoyed it, it had a nice presentation all around, from level design, to the Prince's moves, to story and dialogue. I'd like to say I'm looking forward to the sequels, but I've heard too much about them. Well done in a technical sense perhaps, but apparently lacking the subtler touches this game had.

I'd recommend you give it another try as it's a good game. But I'm afraid it gets a lot worse as the game goes on,  regarding heights. :-/

I am not a fan of survival horror devolution end of the world games at all, i frankly think the games industry has taken a deep wrong turning with that entire genre and will be sorry soon if not already. It is so morbid and dark that it depresses ppl and turns off potential gamers from new and promising areas of our potential future playership. I see nothing fun about the sad mad bad slashing and gnashing of darksome worlds. Some of the FPS games are beautifully made and have much to recomend them, (Far Cry comes to mind) and have generated a lot of new content from players some of which is as good as the orginal. But the dark side is dark and life is dark enough already for me.

All of this is personal opinion but shared after many years of looking at everything...and i do hope that the game companies move on into new directions

Yes, Andromus, that elevator fight was indeed -intensely- annoying.  Stopping time helps, though, and Farah can provide you with a very helpful shrtcut for some.

As for the final section I found myself despairing, too, my first time---and my second time, too.  It's hard.  But it's not unfairly so.  Overall, combat is too restrictive in the game, a problem fixed in the latter installments, but honestly that's my only complaint: the story, art, music and puzzle gameplay all make up for it in my opinion.

I would advise you at least give The Two Thrones a try: while not as good as The Sands of Time in any respect, it comes close in many, and the fighting is never ridiculously trying---and can be avoided a lot of the time, too.

Warrior Within is kind of trashy, though: whereas Sands is an intelligent game with thoughtful characters and a compelling crisis to work through, Warrior feels like it was written by a bunch of horny teenagers who watched The Crow one too many times.  Sigh.  It does have great gameplay (be it combat or puzzles), but it's very long, and the whole time you have to suffer through a lackluster story, inappropriate-feeling electric-guitar music, terrible voice acting, ugly models even for the main characters, and sometimes pretty drab (though still beautiful, in their own way) locales.
You can't kill someone in a studio.

I stopped playing Fallout 3 when I was about 8 hours into the game because it was so damn depressing. Which is kind of strange, because I adore reading 'end of the world' books and horror novels and the like. But to actually be standing there, in such a bleak and oppressive atmosphere... I just couldn't enjoy myself. I guess they conveyed the atmosphere too well.

On the other hand, Oblivion was an utter joy to explore.
