There is a really good box with all thief games called Thief the complete collection that was released recently. It even contains the gold version of thief 1, which usually is quite hard to find (and incredibly expensive). I bought the set to get the gold version, even though I already had a copy of every thief game.
Deadly shadows is an absolutely amazing game (like all the thief games), and I agree with XerNosam, there really should be more games like Thief out there. I liked splinter cell, but the non-linear nature of the levels in thief (many of them did feel like realistic places, where people would actually be able to live) made all the thief games better.

Hm, an optical illusion created by the "frayed" wings and the fact that the game artists seemed too bashful to draw the contour of his buttocks in more detail... [smiley=laughing.gif]

Status : Offline | That is Disciples 1 (for some strange reason I can't take screenshots in it, all I get is a very black screen with a few lighter dots, that is why I used a screenshot from mobygames). It is quite similar to disciples 2, from a gameplay point of view (the key difference is that you get a lot less things in Disciples 1, less units, less spells, less factions (compared to Disciples 2 gold)). Also I'm not too keen on the graphical style in Disciples 1, a lot of the portraits has an anime-ish style, unlike the styler of Disciples 2 & 3, which has a more serious dark fantasy tone to it. Still, anyone who like Disciples 2 should like disciples 1.
Hopefully they will fix the problems with Disciples 3. A lot of people have complained about its buggyness, and hopefully they will release more patches that fix the serious ones. Have you tried asking for help on their forum?

Not yet, but I figured that hopefully more patches will arrive, so I'll be patient for a little longer, thanks Fnord.
Maum, these are turn based strategy games, - I've been playing quite a bit of #2 in the series, but have to force myself to stop every time after a while, because it is a game that sucks you in and spits you out a few months later..-erm, or does it ever? : I just keep playing and playing and playing, and then realize that I've been leaving life behind - dirty dishes piled high, hair unwashed over weekends, [smiley=eww.gif] [smiley=blush.gif] bleary-eyed because when I should go to bed, it's: "just one more turn, just one more turn- I'm almost done with this campaign!" ..er... -you get the picture... :-[
So how is your Ultima going, Maum - is it grabbing you like it did before?

Even with the ridiculously outdated graphics it's still one of the best games I've ever played. The only downside is not having the manual and map handy. I have to refer to my computer version every 5 minutes.

Hmmm, like I mentioned in the Strategy thread, Civ V is out already - was released 21 Sept. Perhaps not yet in your country? When does it release where you live?
EDIT: Oh, ok, I see it's out 24 Sept. in Europe. Well, almost there!

| Deleted User | Now that I’m finally starting to get a better handle on the mechanics (better late than never I suppose) of these great RPGs, the significance of screens like this isn’t nearly as intimidating. Still, a little foresight still doesn’t hurt if you all here know what I mean.

Status : Offline | Oooh, good stuff, CB! This is one of the games that I've been tempted to watch a Youtube playthrough of, since it is pretty hard to get going on XP, and then i usually don't get very far into the game before getting distracted by other stuff.
I've been wishing and wishing GOG could do Planescape, but I don't know how easy it would be for them to get the rights for that. It would be a scoop indeed, methinks, and I'd be prepared to pay quite a bit for a GOG version.
Last when I looked, the game was selling for quite a bit on e-bay. Luckily I "inherited" a copy, but as I say, it's an old copy and not easy to get going.
Good luck, and let us know what you think! As far as I can make out, this is a game that you have to play right to the end to really appreciate what it is about...

Status : Offline | There are several guides & patches out there to get it going in XP. I have the old 4 CD version, and it runs well in XP.
CB: Max out charisma, no matter what you are about to play. In Planescape you will spend a lot of time talking to people (and this is also where most of your XP will come from). Also, get a high Wis score and put the rest of the stat points in whatever you think sounds good (I for one thought that playing a wizard was a good idea, as it means that int (another stat that is useful in conversations) can be raised. (But then again, Dex can be quite useful at certain points as well, and so can str...)
Also, don't throw away the crowbar that you find early on. During my first attempt at the game, I had to cheat in order to get another one, because I simply could not find a spare crowbar, and I forgot who I had sold it to. Also, carry a hammer, at least unit the city itself has asked you to use it.
You are in for a treat, planescape has one of the best stories of any CRPG that I have ever played. It is quite different from any other games out there.

| Deleted User | Back around Nov. or Dec. 2009 the game was released in the UK under DVD format compatible with Windows 98/Me/XP/Vista and was described as a new and improved re-release of the 1999 version. OK, but then I will never agree that including the game manual on the disc can be considered as an improvement. I presume it has relevent patches already applied since it starts up with a normal WinVista install but I cannot be totally sure.
Back then I happened to run across it on Ebay and at the time several UK vendors had it listed quite inexpensively. (less than $20 USD including shipping I recall) I see that those deals are no longer available and on amazon.co.uk I see that the price has been jacked three-fold. Yikes.
Thanks for all those tips Fnord. I see you picked up on my subtle ploy.

Status : Offline | I just got home from a shopping round, and guess what I found? A used copy of Risen! (There is a store that sells used games, usually rather cheap, not far from here. I've picked up some nice games there in the past like Penumbra collection, Genesis rising & Heroes of might & magic 4 (complete collection)). Time to see if it is as good as Gothic.
The early versions of the engine that Planescape runs on is not the most modern computer friendly. Both Baldurs gate 1 & planescape have some problems related to modern computers, but from what I've understood the patches simply tweek the game a little bit, to make them work with modern graphics cards. I guess the version you have have an official fix applied to it. And you're welcome. And remember that most problems have multiple solutions, so if you can't handle one part a certain way, you can probably find an alternative way of doing it.

Robbing The Cradle delivered! The hype around this level being one of the creepiest ever created is 100% accurate. Ion Storm's use of sound and lighting made my hands sweat and the hair on the back of my neck stand at attention! I was GLAD to get out of there!

Status : Offline | Although I'm actually studying and still playing Oblivion (Yay! I'm now the proud master of the Fighter's Guild!) the older game I've decided to peep into is Dungeon Siege. Yup, although I've had the game for a few years, I never got around to playing it for more than about 30 minutes.
Even old as it is, with it's poor resolution and lack of proper anti-aliasing, it's a pretty game, and I'm enjoying the music so far. My only problem is that I have just begun, (killed a few Krug and a few insects) but have not the faintest clue in which direction the town of Thornbridge lies - the game doesn't seem to give any indicaton as to where I should be going... :-?
Later: Ah, I see, there is only one path to follow.. :-[ : Very, very pretty, tho, hmm?

How is dungeon siege? I've only played the second game in the series (which was rather bad), but from what I've heard, the first one is supposed to be a better game.
