Maum if that is the cumulative version of the community patch that will be a big help.

Install the official patch 1.12 first:

http://www.gothic3.com/index.php?do=097099116105111110061109101100105097

then the latest stable community patch, on that page also.

and there is a great map of the world and info on all the elements of the game once you get your feet wet, i would not look at the map yet, as it is more fun to discover as you go along, but it is up to you...

World Map Gothic III

http://guides.gamepressure.com/gothic3/guide.asp?ID=1501

have done wonders with those patches and lovingly imrproved/saved that beautful game. Just take your time and enjoy it, there is so much there to see, do, explore, discover and experience. They went all the way with the detail in that game, really it s one of the most complete and detailed games yet made, every space in every buidling is detailed to the tiniest degree and there are things to find all over the world. The quests take time and dont be afraid to consult a walkthru for hints or details as some are a bit tough to finish.

Yes, do the official patches first, then that community patch 1.73.  I did both community and official patches. I understand that the community ones are in addition to the official ones, so get both.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Except I'm now probably going to wait till I get my copy of Oblivion. I have downloaded all the G3 patches though.

I'm looking forward to it now. I haven't played a 'proper' (ie 3D) RPG since the Witcher- which I'm still hoping to finish at some point, I had reached chapter 3 until my old laptop died on me.

Currently playing:  Dragon Age Origins,  Dishonored, The Witcher, Fallout 3, Deponia

I've got a new PC Traveller. The issue with the old laptop is rather strange.
When I press the on button it just refuses to switch on. The power comes on for a split second and then dies again. The thing is that sometimes after literally a few weeks of being left alone, it miraculously starts working again.

As I'd made it to chapter 3 and defeated the Queen, I just keep trying my laptop every few days. I just can't face replaying those 3 chapters just yet!

In fact you've spurred me on now, I'm going to try it again on the offchance.

Sounds like your power switch needs to be replaced. I had a similar problem with an old Mac Powerbook i had, had to replace the power switch twice.

enjoy Witcher, my XP system could not run the sound for that, sadly due to EAX incompatabilty. so have fun and remember to SHARE
we love to hear about adventures we all have. There is a great Witcher thread here

Aaaw, -if you can only get it working long enough to get the gamesaves off of it!   Might it be something to do with the battery/powersupply perhaps?

EDIT:
PS, in case you do get it working, your Witcher saves should be sitting in:  My Documents\The Witcher\.  Good luck!

I'm pretty certain one of the patches fixes EAX problems, Chris, I think it was patch 1.5 IIRC.. Have you applied all the patches and still no joy?

How would I go about changing the power switch? The battery was always a bit dodgy (I think I didn't charge it long enough when I first got it) but I always plug in my laptops anyway.

I was quite a regular on that Witcher thread before my laptop gave up on me!

It was just a guess about the lappy if you have a reliable place to have it checked out i would do that, as i am no expert.

Traveller, i did try all the patches, sad to say, i was very disapointed. I dont know for sure that the game itself woudl all be bugged, but when the intro video came on and the sound was going on and off i got very depressed, i jus couldn ot bear to watch such lovely work with such lousy sound. And the equally sad thing was that i had found a fix before but cant find the notes now in my research archives.....i posted about it on the offical forum but after seeing so many problems posted about the sound online i decided to give up.  My system i think is too old and just not fast enough to deal with the demands of the game, and I am not going to be upgrading my card anymore as my tech says i am at the limit to what my AMD 3400 2.6 ghz system can upgrade to, FX 7600GT. Not in the budget right now to go more modern.  so that is the tale.

Deleted UserOh, boo, Chris, that really is a sad tale, especially since The Witcher features such lovely Eastern European folk music.
In the EEd you get a whole disc just for the soundtrack.
If your system is up to it TW really has very good sound, actually.
So let's hope you get some windfall soon that will enable you to upgrade and join us.

Maum, can't you telephone the place you bought your laptop from and ask them what the faults detection/repair procedure is with them?  I tend to take my stuff back to where I bought them, and they either send them back to manufacturer, or repair it themselves, depending on their policy and my warranty.

Fnord, I've kept wanting to thank you for linking to Herr Mannelig..-it's wonderful!  What a perfect song for a medieval-style RPG, don't you think?  Hmm- I think I might just have married the troll for those gifts of hers, they certainly seem very useful, especially that sword... pity the shirt isn't magic that makes you invulnerable..

Here is one with visuals from G3...   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7mcEG69asU&feature=related
I actually feel like seeing if I can find some old gamesaves, so I can find that nice li'l easter egg - where exactly in the game does this happen?

Hey, and here is a different version of it, sung by someone else.. - I wonder in which language this one is - can you tell?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_erNGdfJfA&feature=fvw

Btw, if this is part of the LOTR special edition bundle pack, I think this is what might just convince me to buy it...   8-)  I've been vaccilating, as it is quite pricey...

It seems to be quite a popular song, btw...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQhJu3NJrRM&feature=related

Oh, and i found a version similar to the version that Fnord had linked to, with lyrics added, though the sound quality is not as good as the one that Fnord had linked to.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn-0eIgey-s

I'm glad that you liked the song. Garmarna has made several songs along that line, many of them based on other ballads, and most of them seem to be on youtube. They are indeed very fitting for a medieval setting.

I think you could hear the song during chapter 2 (or was it 3). They will play on the large stage in the old camp (near Diego) during night time. This is what it looks like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OU3LR7nNjd0&feature=PlayList&p=EABB2F71EA4ACA4F&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=4 , which seem to be by the same band as the last of the links that you posted.

This sounds like a latin language. It's either classic Latin or Italian, as far as I can tell (although that is only based on the male singer's performance, I have a hard time haring what the female singer actually sings).

re the sound going out and back on. T his is a known problem with .bik/bink files (witch the Witcher uses for the intro, etc).

It's caused by a setting on your pc that throttles back your cpu to run at a lower clock when it's idle/not under max load (to reduce heat/energy consumption).

There should be a setting in your bios to turn it off if this is turned on somehow.

i know this solved that exact issue for me on my e8400, I'm not sure if it's something they did for older cpu's like yours though, still can't hurt to check it.

Just might be up my alley though it may not run well on my system. I have hopes though since 'Dead Space' is running fine. Happy Gaming.

When I was building this PC, I remember reading about how to turn off that slow-down kind of feature.  I'll see if I can find it.

At the moment I'm giving Gothic 2 a serious go. While I have not gotten far into the game, I do think that the setting in Gothic 1 was better (the setting in gothic 2 feels a bit more average than the one in gothic 1). I'm also re-experiencing the joy of getting killed by every small woodland creature around
I have recently managed to join the militia, and darn, the guard for their first quest (find the weed) was hard... I had to use 2 magic scrolls, and about 10 arrows, and then hack away the last 1/5 with my axe in order to beat him (he got too close for me to use my bow).

If it makes you feel any better, NOTR is notorious for it's difficulty - they made it even more difficult than vanilla G2   (as if that was not difficult enough already   :
  )

Have fun!

PS. I agree with you that G1 has the most unique setting of all the Gothics;  - but they get bigger 'n bigger but more generic worlds as they progress - and then Risen was tiny again - about the same as G1, I'd say...

I'm very curious about Arcania, I must say...

I thinik i found the fix for Witcher again: the same one that fixed this problem before: it is to use an older dll for Bink32.dll   it worked before and this is a fix that was found on the Witcher forums...

You're in luck.....  turns out that Binkw32.dll version 1.9.1.0 works fine. Trick is getting the thing. If you are lucky it's buried somewhere on you PC via another game. You can do a search of your PC for that file and dig into properties of each you find and hope you can find one with that version number (I say this just in case. I mean I don't think these .dll files are considered freeware per say...). I had no luck with that.... I had to search on line for many hours before I weeded it out. Wasn't easy....

guy who figured it out: http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?topic=24645.msg530821#msg530821

link to 1.9.1.0: http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?topic=24645.msg5318242#msg5318242

Worked for me anyway... Only downside is that the logo movies take a wee bit longer to start up, but other than that, works perfectly..... just rename the old "Binkw32.dll" as "Binkw32.dll.old" or something.... just in case. I mean, skipping audio is still better than broken video.

Anyway I suspect the skipping is due to our CPU's not being powerful enought to handle the newer .dll version of Bink. You using a single core, too? My CPU is a single core 939 AMD 3000+.

will test it today.

The Witcher EE Bink Audio Fix

YES..   it works. PErfect sound, got to see the intro video in full sound and loved it. OK, we are set, now to begin the adventure. Looks challenging but hey, that is what life is about.

I've only played a little of the demo (looks to be the tutorial for the game) but it's amazing. I'll definitely be picking this one up. So far, everything is top notch and I really like the stealth aspects. Anyone who likes third person action gameplay with a healthy dose of stealth, please download a try this demo now and yes Traveller, I think you'll like (love) it.
