Ooh! that was a lucky break for you, Masher. I enjoyed STALKER. I suspect you might too. So do try it out, won't you? Are you liking Dead Space?
So have you finished Fallout 3 yet, Arkadia, and are you liking it?
I do plan to either start the 'Lost Crown' or 'STALKER' after 'Dead Space'. Seeing that you enjoyed 'STALKER', I'm thinking I'll like it also. Though I'm only at the very early stage of 'Dead Space' and still learning the ropes, I'm having a blast. I'm using the keyboard and mouse without much trouble, yet that is. Hope to get more gaming time this weekend. Happy gaming.

Still, as I get into the game challenges, I"ll be sure to beg for help, if you don't mind.
I must say that the game looks gorgeous in 1920x1080 widescreen wtih all vid settings on ultra high.

Not decided yet if it's as good as say morrowind, but from what little I have played it the setting seem really interesting, decent voice acting & an interesting if a bit awkward control) Mirror's edge (ordered it at the same time as I ordered gothic, for a mere 10€. New games sure drop in price fast. Also an amazing game, and it makes me wonder why not more games utilize bright colours. The game looks and feels great!) Broken sword 1 (Been standing in my shelf for a while, it's a nice game, although it feels a bit too easy)

I've heard many good reports about it from gamer friends, Taurnil! Knowing your tastes, I suspect you will like it, but please let us know.
PS. Nice to see you again after your long abscence!

You don't know how relieved I am that you don't positively detest those controls, Fnord. They are awkward, you have to admit, but if you perservere for a while you become used to them amazingly fast. At first I hated the controls in Gothic, but from what I have read on the internet, it seems like everyone does that. But the controls make sense, it's just that they are different from those of most other games. I still don't love them, but at least i'm getting used to them. The only part that I have a problem with is how the camera snaps to creatures, which makes it hard to target a single person in a crowd (it's a bit annoying when you want to talk to people in the camp). The game itself is a bit humbling as everything short of small bugs that don't attack you seem to be quite dangerous.

| Deleted User | Fnord: some small combat tips: taunting and kiting (drawing out single units from a group of enemies) and ranged is the way to go with Gothic.
Luckily one can outrun almost anything in the game.
So I would, for instance, try to taunt a single creature in a group, then run. Look over your shoulder to see if a single creature followed you, and attack with melee or ranged. The only problem with ranged, is that reloading arrows/bolts takes quite some time, so the best for ranged is to shoot from an elevation where the creature or person cannot reach you.
With melee, you need to watch your health, and do be chicken enough to turn tail and run when you see it going low. Then you can quickly eat some healing herbs while on the run, and turn around to finish off that nasty that's been giving you trouble. Saving often, is a must.
If you want to cheat a bit, I can tell you of an exploit to make yourself tons of pieces of meat that you can sell - I only fouind out about this exploit 3/4 through the game, and I'm ashamed to admit that I used it.... :-[
(...well, I only used it a little... -just to check it out and for a tiny boost, and for the fun of it... )

Status : Offline | Ah, thanks to the advice to use ranged weapons. That might make the game a bit easier. Currently I have been body-pulling the enemies out of their groups (body-pulling is when you get close enough for one of the enemies to notice you)
And no thanks about the exploit. I only use exploits that I find myself
The game itself is rather buggy. This is what happened when I was running from a group of wolves. All of them are stuck in the water and can't move.

| Deleted User | Careful when pulling with ranged weapons though, since your character cannot run fast with them equipped. Best thing is to shoot once and then pelt for it with weapon put away, and look over your shoulder after a bit to see if it's still following. You don't want the creature to jump on you while your ranged weapon is equipped, because of the slow reloading times, he'll eat you before you can draw again.
As you know, best to change to melee if the creature is close, but of course you can hit him again with ranged if he is still far away. The ideal is to do ranged from where they cannot reach you, but such spots are far less available in G1 than in G2 and G3. G3 has a lot of such convenient spots.
Heh - you say the wolves got stuck? Nice! I hope you were not stuck there as well?

Status : Offline | I'm currently working on Sacred, having a lot of fun playing as a dwarf. I love the size of the world, and the variety of environments. It's a shame it's so-so graphically, especially from the longest view point one is almost obligated to use if you want to see what's ahead.
It's awkwardly translated, but some fun dialogue comes through from time to time. There are nods to things you would expect, like King Arthur or The Lord of the Rings, but also Star Trek and Red Dwarf.
It's been a dream of mine to tote around modern weapons in a fantasy RPG, and Sacred has essentially given me that chance with a grenade launcher, flame thrower, and a cannon. I've hardly done any hack and slashing, instead relying mostly on the cannon for ranged attacks, the flame thrower for melee mobs, and the grenade launcher when I can't reach the enemy with either of the other two weapons. It's almost-not-quite the lightsaber coolness of the Jedi Knight games, though I expect the repetitiveness and relative ease (big mistake, only offering two difficulty levels at the start) will catch up to me eventually. But for now I'm a one man, er, dwarf army.

While that group of wolves got stuck in the river (creatures seem to get stuck in water when they try to attack), their friends on the beach were sadly waiting for me to get out of there.
And it's incredible how much a pair of sack pants can protect you in that game. Got my first piece of armour, and suddenly I don't fear small woodland creatures anymore.
*edit* Got a bit further, and I must say that i was really surprised by what I found. During night time in the old camp I found a band playing a rock cover based on a medieval Swedish ballad named Her Mannelig. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herr_Mannelig
I could not find the gothic version on youtube, but this is what the melody sounds like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWY6GMYgGjI (this version is much softer, and you can actually hear what most of the words are supposed to be, although it is in Swedish (the version in gothic is also in Swedish, although it sounds like it's a German band playing it, as their Swedish is far from perfect).

I never played the game long enough to get those! Sounds like tons of fun, Andromus! I recently decided to give Sacred 2 another chance, btw - but first up after is Ego Draconis and Venetica!
@ Fnord: I'm glad to see that it looks like you're enjoying Gothic, Fnord - please keep us posted.
..as for me, I'm still busy with Dragon Age.

Have you tried Batman Arkham Asylum yet? I've heard it's very good and am willing to give it a try soon. Or do you feel it's not quite your kind of game?

Status : Offline | After two nearly show stopping bugs (one that I had to use a console command to get rid of, and one where I had to re-load an earlier save), i'm back on the right track in gothic. I have found all 4 stones (all 4 regions had some serious bug, the troll cave was the most serious of the bunch, where my character got stuck trying to use the winch, so I had to "cheat" to get out of the loop, near the circle I managed to get Millton stuck by going down into the catacomb before talking to him, running up when I noticed all the skeletons and when Milton tried to attack the invincible zombie he got stuck, near the harpy tower the poor AI pathfinding resulted in a character getting stuck when trying to talk to me, and near the ruins I managed to pull the small troll with my bow, which meant that a trigger never happened). Still, even with those serious bugs, I still enjoy the game a lot! More than dragon age actually.

Hmm. Maybe you move your characters faster than I tend to, because I don't really remember much of pathfinding errors like these. Heh, which reminds me..- I'm not sure if it was G1 or G2, but I found a cool glitch where if you have him jump off a cliff - yes it was G1, I remember jumping off Xardas's tower - you have to get your timing right, but if you step off a cliff and then immediately hit step right (D) (or left, I think), he doesn't die, or even get hurt.. - great fun to go cliff-hopping!
So.. have you met Xardas yet? : Sounds like you're at the point just past that were you have to make the Oomiloomy thing whatsitsname (can't remember the name) for the Orc camp - or no; -perhaps just before that. That only comes after Xardas, IIRC. ..though now I'm wondering which ruins you are talking about? The ones at the Orc camp? Then you'll be past that point.

And knowing how to avoid fall damage is really useful *smiles* You travel faster by jumping rather than running (much like morrowind), so I usually jump forward. Sometimes the game might think that you get stuck  I think thats the trigger) when you hit things like rocks, logs and similar terrain and spawn you a few meters up into the air.

Interestingly, I think back a lot on that little episode...- that was my first time that I'd transformed into another creature, and I thought the spell would eventually wear off, and I'd turn back into a human again, which it didn't. I panicked and thought" "Oh no! Am I doomed to be a meatbug forever?"
I also tried a bloodfly after that, which is rather fun, though you cannot seem to fly very high.
Talking of Morrowind - though it is my favourite game, I did get stuck in the environment quite many times there. Sometimes even trying to levitate out didn't help, though the COC command could get you out of such a fix.

Status : Offline | I'm done with gothic 1. The developers estimated the game to last 80-100h, it lasted just over 18h for me Still, it was a highly enjoyable experience, with an interesting setting, interesting creatures and a good story.
Yes, the first transformation was interesting *smiles* When I noticed that I did not turn back, i thought that it was a very long lasting spell and went of to make some tea. When I returned, my character was still a bug, so I started searching the internet to see if it was a known bug... only to find out that you are, in fact, supposed to press enter.
The transformation spells were fun, but I was so afraid that they would come in handy later on, so I ended up never using them (apart from when I simply tried them all out, althought i reloaded afterward)(much like healing potions and every other scroll, apart from those used to kill the golems.... By the end of the game I had more than 300 healing potions and 150 mana potions left unused).
When I played morrowind for the first time I did not save after being done with the initial part, which I really did regret afterwards.... After getting of the silt strider in Balmora I jumped of to the left of the platform... and got stuck between the rocks. I think they fixed this location with the first patch.
