what can i say... just finished the lost crown and i am dumbfounded by the utter brilliance of this man's mind!
what can i mention first? the superb story? the fantastic atmosphere? the excellent touches of horror, in perfect amounts, without going overboard to the point of ridiculous, but without ever keeping you off your toes? (not to mention that i almost crapped on me pants at a certain point!
smth that rarely happens mind you) i don't think there's any doubt for me what will be my top game for this year... absolutely wonderful!! 8-) oh, and one of the very very few games ever that i have reloaded saves just to reexperience smth - did that more than once here (esp the bathroom sequence during the 2nd night)

now when it comes to gameplay aspects, i admit there were some flaws, esp the inability to skip dialogs, but all those flaws didn't phase me one bit, i was so engrossed in the game... i remember playing that indescribable piece of, well you know what, belief & betrayal, where at some points dialogs could not be skipped and i was getting so mad i almost smashed my mouse into my monitor... playing the lost crown on the other hand was such a great experience, i just didn't care

no spoilers follow: about the ending, i understand there are ppl who didn't like it at all, but i can honestly say i don't have an opinion... it certainly confused me a bit, but i will have to replay the game (oh and i will, i will) to see what i think of it

i do have one question though, for those who played the game (spoiler probably):
Spoiler Alertwho were mr hare and mr crow? what happened to them? did they ever get to saxton?
i really can't figure that part out

and what was that i heard? darkfall 3 is in the making? BRING IT OOOOOOOOON!!!

after such a mediocre year adventure-wise, and this overall drop quality-wise during the past couple of years, i am so glad i played this game, right at the point where i was almost determined not to play another new adventure release again - things were so bad... and maybe lucien is right and perry rhodan will be good too and i can have nice adventure dreams again! (and such an important year this is too, 20 years of adventuring for me - it would have been a shame to all end here)

ps... oh and did i mention that the uk release of the game tops it all off with one of the most incredible box covers i've seen in a game in my whole life?! needless to say i am in the process of printing a nice tshirt out of it! i may post pics when it's ready

ps2... oh and btw, did anyone notice the person behind hadden's voice in the credits? now that's what i call attention down to the last detail! 8-)

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

I'm not sure what you mean?

In the booklet credits Jonathan Boakes is mentioned as the voiceactor for Hadden. In the game credits  Hadden's voice is "unknown".

One thing you can say about Aya- he either REALLY LOVES a game or REALLY HATES it. You don't have to guess!

no! but that's the only question i got no theories nor do i think i can figure out... the rest of the questions i got i am saving for when i replay the game

@laurie: "unknown" is exactly what i mean... it's like keeping the mystery surrounding hadden after the game is over (regardless what's on the booklet)

@sir dave: although true to some extent, it seems more so because those are the only cases i talk about... if it's not extreme, it's not worth mentioning!

Aya, for once you and I are in COMPLETE agreement here.
It was a phenomenal achievement on its own - then add the fact that ONE man did it and it's pretty mind boggling.  I firmly believe everything I put in the review for the game and have thoroughly enjoyed reading player posts around the web that essentially say the same thing.

maybe the lost crown is the game that will unite adventurers? who knows, maybe it will be the game that sirdave and i will share the same opinion too!
the only part where i disagreed is about the size of the game... well, not really disagreed, the game is indeed huge, but, looking at the saxton map in the booklet, it made me feel that it was smaller than it could have been... esp the old hotel and old school could have made for some pretty creepy exploration - yes, i can't get enough! [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]

totally agreed that the game is underpriced! 20eur for such masterpiece? that's practically stealing! (oh, and did i mention the insanely awesome cover art of the uk version?! just that was worth 20eur!
)

btw, i am curious which was the scene that you found particularly disturbingly shocking... you could mention it here in a spoiler tag

I was playing at about 3am, no lights on in my house when Spoiler AlertNigel was exploring between the walls inside the museum and the apparition of the little girl suddenly appeared behind him.

I almost jumped out of my skin! This was just one of many parts that creeped me out.

Spoiler Alert
I'm a cat owner and love em'.  I didn't think he would go "there" in the story but he did. It was most unexpected, yet I was glad to see him do it. I was equally glad that GotGame had the balls to let him keep it in there.

I doubt it will unite players. I fully expected this one to be talked about far and wide. As it stands, the only forum that had lots of posts on it was GameBoomers who analyzed the heck out of it.

I am extremely doubtful that any new games will ever match the mystique of the older supposed classics - even if the new games are much better.

Spoiler Alertoh yes, that was indeed very disturbing, hands down the most disturbing part of the game - and maybe one of the top ones in gaming history i'd say... i was also surprised that smth like that was used... personally i would have prefered it to be ppl, but what can you do!
at least mr tibbs made it!

well, i'd say only a few new games are much better... on avg, as many already know, i believe older classics are a lot better than the majority of what we got now - i mean come on, art of murder, belief & betrayal and sinking island pitched against grim fandango, monkey island and gabriel knight? (and i'm only mentioning the "popular" classics)... but i can't comment on the mystique, because it was all very new back then as well, and that certainly adds to it

I am halfway through this game.  The artistry is absolutely gorgeous.  Story and environment, etc., are near the top, although in that case the black-and-white hurts.  The movements of the characters are irritating at best and really disappointing and worst. They look good, their personalities and voices are good, but they float and are stiff as boards.

Mind you, I'm only halfway through, and maybe the game loosens up. Nothing really spooky yet (although some nice twists and turns, for sure), and not too much really intriguing. It is just a nice experience to be in, without a whole lot of emotional investment.

I don't know if this happened to anyone else but during the whole game I kept referring to the lead character as Jonathon not Nigel. Am I the only one? But then again I kept calling Van Helsing, in Dracula Origin, Sherlock. And yes I do talk to the characters when I play adventure games.....there I said it...

I have to agree with much of what you said  Aya about the game a few posts ago. It took me about an hour to really get involved with the game & then I went on to have a wonderful experience. But that's about it for me.

I was totally disapponted at the lack of any clarification as to exactly what the storyline was about & IMO there is not enough about it to glean anything more on a replay. Yes, it was a very immersive game but as an AG lacks without any satisfactory tie-up to the hours you've invested to get to the point. Maybe I'm missing something? But I felt completely let down at the end & felt that there was a lot of self-indulgence on the part of the developer that excluded the player - that I do not appreciate!

I agree that the games is very atmospheric, a joy to look at. I'm currently playing the game, so i have to withhold judgment for now. It seesm fair to say that Boakes is a master of suggestion. But I'm not too sure about the gameplay. In the very first day, I got stuck, not knowing what to do next. I consulted a walkthrough (I see no shame in that) and it turned out I had to

Spoiler Alertlook in a mirror

to trigger the next event. What the logic in that? How could I possibly have known? So. let's see what the rest of the game brings....

Spoiler AlertDid you make all the phone calls? If you did, to Hadden in particular I believe, it was scrying was suggested until your ghost hunting equipment arrives...pouring water over a mirror...a low tech ghost hunting alternative.

It's very likely you would do that action since, at that point in the game, Jonathan doesn't let you go anywhere or do much of anything else (not saying it's something that jumps out at you or anything).

The annoying thing is the place that I'M stuck right now... I've exhausted all the conversation trees... I've tried showing all the items I have to everyone... I just KNOW it's some bloody path I couldn't take before... one conversation mentioned a place... but the area it points to won't let me go any further than i've been before.

Argh!

MINOR SPOILERS

Well, the action with the mirror becomes obvious very soon after making some phonecalls, but my point is that is has no place that early on in the game.

There is nothing at that stage to hint that only by looking in the mirror, you trigger the next scene.

That it does so later on, is logical.

But I will let you know wether mr. Boakes really is Da Man later on.... So far, I think the game is quite clever and well made.

How scary you find TLC is very much a personal thing. I've seen 'complaints' that the game isn't remotely frightening in any way, but it depends on your own scary tolerance level. Personally I thought the parts where

Spoiler AlertThe wandering spirit of Thomas Ager pauses to stare right at you when you use the camera in Northfield church and 'something' you can't quite make out goes clumping through the butterfly collection room in the museum

ARE pretty creepy and the gradual realisation of how many dead people you interact with during the game is kind of chilling.

Ultimately, despite the undoubtedly wonderful touches in the game it is fatally flawed because of the ending, and trivially flawed because of the desperately bad voice acting (which I appreciate doesn't bother everyone).

Maybe Jonathan will feel more able to explain everything once the games sales cycle has run its course, but I believe that he would prefer to have the game keep a certain 'mystique' by not providing total closure..

Ok I have  played the game now.  I have to agree with all of this now.  Most gamers that like ghost stories don't really believe in ghosts.  They are something that is hard to blieve in if you have never seen anything you couldn't explain.  I am a little different as I bought an old house like this one that was condemmed and had a very bad history like this one 15 years ago.  I have many audio recordings like the ones found in the game and have seen things float in the air in real life.  There was one night I will never forget. For almost an hour about 2 Am in the morning we could hear something like a couple of bears fighting in the attic right above our bedroom.  You could hear growling and there claws ripping at the floor as the ran at each other.  I recorded it and went up there the next day but found no sign of anything at all up there.  There was no way any animal could get up there.  My family and I lived there for a long time with the ghosts after we remodeled all the lower floors.  After a very disturbing letter from a young girl I found in a wall I was replaceng that said she was being held up there I had some profeshinals come out and investigate.   They found a lot of things out and confirmed everything I had told them about and gave me more on it's history than I already had.  There conclusion was that they thought it was a portal to another demention where the ghost travel from place to place.   I don't know if I totally believe that as most of the sounds we heard all fit into the history of what we knew about what hapned in the house over the years.

This game is prbably the most acurate and realistic explanation of what ghosts really are that anyone will ever find and was definaltly the best ghost story I have read or played.  If you don't believe there are ghosts then it might change your mind.

If you are wondering  I still own the house but I bought a new one so I don't live there now.

That's amazing, Jalex. It sounds like something out of a Ghosthunters episode -- one of the ones where they actually found something.

I never thought about it before, but come to think of it a dimension where demented spirits dwell might well be called a 'demention'.

Well, yet another game kicked my butt.

I finally got tired of trying to figure out what had me stumped. I had hoped it would be some stupid transition thing where I had to stand somewhere to make the game move on. No such luck.

Spoiler AlertMillstones - this drove me nuts. After looking up some hints.. I went back to the plates... Nigel gives you the hint with each one... I couldn't believe I missed something so obvious.

I didn't finish the game.. no intention of going any further. Once I've cheated (got help) the game is "tainted" to me and I just don't see any reason to finish.  :-[

At any rate, I'm done with adventure games. I think I play them, difficult or not, just for the story. I don't know..  :-/
